Importing/Uploading Messages to a Groups.IO Group
If?someone?is?the?owner?of?a?group?with?a?Yearly?Premium?membership,?is?it?possible?to?create?a? subgroup?and?then?IMPORT/UPLOAD?messages?saved?from?an old Yahoo?Group? I have a copy of the message archive backed up. Now, how do I import it to a Groups.IO group? I?see?export/download buttons for messages (.mbox files) but?not?import/upload ones at Groups.IO. And just to avoid answers that don't apply... some background. One of the members of my group was able to make a copy of the message archive of an old Yahoo Group that no longer has a living owner. Thus, it was not possible for that group to participate in a group transfer. As Mark Fletcher said to me in an email: "...If you can't make the [email protected] member a moderator of the group, then the transfer can't happen." But a member of that group does have backed up a copy of the contents of the message archive. At one of my Groups.IO groups I would be happy to create a sub-group dedicated to the contents of that particular old Yahoo group IF there can be a way to?IMPORT/UPLOAD messages to the sub-group? If that's not possible, I suppose the best we can do in that case is to convert the odd ball file type Yahoo gives out into a readable PDF File, which can be uploaded to the files section.? Any recommendations about converting those into PDF? |
If the archive was downloaded using PG Offline, then you can convert the messages into pdf files and upload the pdf file to GIO as files. On Sat, Nov 9, 2019 at 10:28 AM James Bean via Groups.Io <santmat_mystic=[email protected]> wrote:

I've seen this mentioned a few times. However, PGO doesn't export directly to PDF, you'd need an intermediate step. Current (v4.0.897) options under 'Group/Export messages' are: The most likely there would be multiple HTML files; load them in to a browser and use 'Print to PDF' (or equivalent). PGO's own 'Print message' option only prints one message at a time, and 'Export to Folder' only creates a .pg4 file (SQLite, I think). |
We've been converting the PGOffline into a CSV file.? Then using the Excel import, use the pipe character on the key board as the separator.
Then, visually look thru the excel file for any and all hiccups to mend or tweak.? Once done, you now have a very searchable file, small in size and useful vs. a PDF that causes the read to be 1. confused, 2. scroll scroll scroll up/down and scroll scroll scroll left/right constantly.? PLUS, the PDF will NOT remove the awful weird characters should any or all HTML code is scrambled in there.? The excel can do a FIND/REPLACE each of the annoying HTML codes to either nothing or a simple 'space'. The is my 3rd bounce.? Prodigy to GeoCities to Yahoo to Groups.io.? Will it ever end.? !?? Only if I get my own server setup and a forum based software, but that takes money, time and constant upkeep. Things I don't have much in life.? |
James,
If someone is the owner of a group with a Yearly Premium membership,As others have answered, no, that feature isn't available. If that's not possible, I suppose the best we can do in that case isThe naming convention Yahoo used is inconvenient but mbox is a pretty common format (I'm not sure which you were calling oddball, "type" could refer either). Another option, which you can do in addition to any others, is upload the .zip of mbox file(s) Yahoo gave you for that group as a file in that Groups.io subgroup. You can then tell members that they can use a file viewer or email program to read the messages. I haven't tried Thunderbird yet, but a member of another group reported that its "ImportExportTools NG" add-on failed on these files. That person recommended File Viewer Plus ($40) which was able to read them. Thunderbird works just fine. You have to rename the files sent by yahoo to add the .mbox extension and have at least one email client in Thunderbird to do it.
In Thunderbird, add the Import/Export Add-on. Under "Local Folders" Right Click on Local Folders, the "New Folder" and add a new folder. Right Click on the New FOlder you just made and Use the Import Add-on (Top of right-click menu). Choose "Import mbox File" Leave the first radio button on in the pop-up box and Click OK. Choose you file and voila! |
