Syncing new messages from Yahoo to Groups.io after group transfer
#yahoo
Hi Everyone,
I own a fairly large Yahoo group, and it has transferred successfully to Groups.io. I've set the Yahoo group to require moderation of new posts for the moment. I'd like to have new posts to Yahoo group automatically propagate to the Groups.io group until I close down the Yahoo group entirely. Is there a best practice for doing so? I've thought of directly adding the Groups.io group address to the Yahoo group, but it looks like Yahoo is requiring a Yahoo ID for that now. I've also thought of setting up a single purpose Yahoo account as a member of both the Yahoo Group and the Groups.io group and having it automatically forward any mail from the Yahoo Group to the Groups.io group, but that obviously loses sender info and seems like a kludge. I tried searching the wiki and past messages for this topic, but I didn't find an answer. I apologize if this has been asked, and I just plain missed the info. All suggestions are welcome. |

Is there a best practice for doing so?There is no simple way of doing this; there is certainly no click here to enable autoforwarding. I am tempted to ask why. Although it may seem brutal IMHO the best option is to disable posting on your Yahoo group immediately after posting a message there to the effect that from "now" all business will be via the Groups.io group. If you enable members to use Groups.io by posting on Yahoo you risk extending the transition period during which your individual members stop sending to Yahoo and start sending to Groups.io instead. Another complication would will be that (a) submits a post to Yahoo (which is then forwarded to Groups.io) and then (b) replies. But will (a) see (b's) reply? Perhaps, perhaps not. Unless you set up bidirectional forwarding then I think you are providing a mechanism for growing confusion. Your members might grumble (many probably will regardless) but I genuinely think that a sharp transition is the best way forward. Chris |

I've set the Yahoo group to require moderation of new posts for the moment. You should continue to do that, and redirect anyone who attempts to post to the new group. If their messages aren't getting through, they will soon get the idea. I'd like to have new posts to Yahoo group automatically propagate to the Groups.io group until I close down the Yahoo group entirely. Is there a best practice for doing so? If you must, you can set up an email integration on groups.io and a forwarding address on your own mail provider such that group emails are forwarded to the integration address. Please be aware of the risk of dupe loops arising from this practice. The actual "best practice" is to simply redirect people who attempt to post to the old group as stated above. You have to cut them off eventually, and there's really no benefit to be derived from not starting now. Regards, Bruce |
CL,
I've thought of directly adding the Groups.io group address to theI was able to do this. One key is to check the "Allow Non Subscribers to Post" box in the Groups.io group. That does mean that I need to approve all such posts, but because the Yahoo Group is not a member of the Groups.io group the original poster's From information comes through in the display name of the message. Also, there is no chance of a message loop. I don't recall if it was the -subscribe request (spoofed From the Groups.io posting address, courtesy of my Yahoo Mail account) or the invite that worked. In the case of an invite it would be important to check the "Add only to mailing list" box to avoid the need to associate it with a Yahoo ID (account). The result is a bit ugly though, as the messages come through with the Groups.io footer appended below the Yahoo Group footer. I would rather have used an Email Integration address than the group's posting address for this, to avoid the moderation requirement, but Yahoo Groups called the coded integration address Invalid and wouldn't let me invite it, nor respond to it when it tried to -subscribe. CL, I wrote: I don't recall if it was the -subscribe request (spoofed From the It was the invite. The confirmation request for the -subscribe did come through eventually, but I was impatient and succeeded with the Invite before then. The result is a bit ugly though, as the messages come through with the Another ugliness is in the Pending page, where the Yahoo Group messages all list a long -sentto address as the sender of the message. But that's seen only be me (the approving mod) so not a big deal. One defect is that owing to how Yahoo Groups mungs the from address, putting the posting member's email address in the clear in the Display Name part of the From field, the posting member's full email address displays at the top of each message. This may be a fatal flaw for the experiment. BTW I'm doing this experiment as a possible way to continue publicly archiving messages in that Yahoo Group, which intends to stay at Yahoo even after the December 14th cutoff. No members there but me. Which is a different motive than covering posts in the interim between initiating a transfer and its completion. But it should work all the same. Your mileage may vary as to its suitability for your purpose. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
