Deleting the Primary Group

Can I delete the Primary group or replace it with one of the Subgroups?

I have a small Group set up for members of a model railroad club.? The club members use one of the Subgroups to communicate between ourselves.? I set up the primary Group to be used for non-members to communicate with the club but I am finding that the primary group is not being used very often.? Non members find us through our website or through Facebook.? The Primary Group seems to cause a lot of confusion for our members who sometimes post to the Primary instead of the Subgroup.?

I would just as soon delete the Primary Group and set the Subgroup up as the Primary. If someone could tell me how to do this it would be greatly appreciated.

Darren,

Can I delete the Primary group or replace it with one of the
Subgroups?
No.

You can delete the subgroup, but there is at present no ability to transfer content from the subgroup to the primary group (or vice-versa, or between subgroups), so you'd be abandoning that content.

I set up the primary Group to be used for non-members to communicate
with the club but I am finding that the primary group is not being
used very often. ... The Primary Group seems to cause a lot of
confusion for our members who sometimes post to the Primary instead of
the Subgroup.
What name did you give the Primary group, or did you leave it as the default "main"?

If you left it as "main" that probably doesn't give your members enough guidance. Consider renaming it to something that fits its purpose. "Front-Porch" might be a bit too long, maybe just "Porch", but you get the idea. A name that will suggest to members that it is not the actual "clubhouse".

The other option is to just cave in to usage, and start using the primary group for club communication, perhaps renaming the subgroup to "archive" or something to indicate that it is no longer "the" place.

Be aware though that any of these renames will have some impact on members (and interested non-members) in that if they've made bookmarks or address book entries those will need to be updated. Likewise their browser/email interface auto-complete functions will retain the old names for a while. As well as replies to prior messages.

And of course links on your website and social media.

Any subscriptions to the group calendar will also need to be updated - as I found out when I renamed my main group.

A further consideration is that member notices can be generated with the group name in the subject and message text so you will need to manually update these.

Wiki page updated accordingly./g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Renaming-a-Group
