Mesages not making it to the group

Our group?/g/brcg-list?has not let any messages in since January 17th. There is no evidence in the logs that the messages have been received?by the system.

?

I attempted to create a message in the web interface and that is not showing in the activity log.

Does anyone know what is up?

Are you a Basic (free) group or one that is paid - for? If the latter are you payments up to date or overdue?

I assume from your mention of your Activity Log that you are an owner or moderator, and that you must therefore be logged in as such, or else you wouldn't be able to see the Log.

There is a setting that prevents members from posting, but allows moderators to post (i.e. an Announcement Group) but if you can't post as a moderator that doesn't look like the reason for things going wrong; in any case I see from your publicly viewable messages that you have numerous "posters" so you don't look like an annoucement group anyway.

If you cannot find anything then an email to [email protected] looks like the best bet.

Chris

Thanks for the response. It is a Basic group. I have emailed support.

Don,

by the system.
That's interesting. And worthy of your request to support. Any message correctly addressed to the group's posting address should be in the logs, either as "attempted to send" (a rejection) or "sent message" (either posted or requiring approval).

I attempted to create a message in the web interface and that is not
showing in the activity log.
That's even more peculiar.

If there's a technical glitch I can't do anything about it (only support can), but I'm curious. Mind if I try a test posting in your group? I'd be a new member so you should be able to catch my message in pending and delete it.

I don't think that matters. A past-due payment causes the group to revert to Basic, it doesn't disable it altogether.

Given the evidence I concur. I don't see anything in the Group Settings listed on the home page that would explain an inability to post.

Yes please give it a try.

Shal,

Your test message made it through. It is the first message to make it through 1/18.?

I will see what happens when I try.

Ok, I just tried sending a message again and it did not show up.

I tried again from the web interface and it did not show up.

So, created a new user and joined the group. I sent a message that showed up.

It appears that this is an issue that is affecting only existing users.

I know this is a (very) long shot but how about checking other members' settings to make sure that someone hasn't set them to "Override; not allowed to post".".

Results of further testing. I removed moderation from the new user I set up and sent a message. The message did not show up.

I reinstated moderation and sent a message and that one showed up.

Shal, I removed moderation from you. Could please try another message and let me know when you have tried it?

Chris,?

Had already checked that and it is not the issue. Also, since I have been working directly with my account and it is not set that way, but messages are not making through that is another indicator.

Also, since I just tried with the new account, I am absolutely certain that is not the issue as the three settings that it has been in are:

  • Override: new user moderated?- messages are showing up.
  • Use Group Moderation Setting - messages do not show up
  • Use Group Moderation Setting - messages do not show up

?

And another test...

I moderated my?own account with Override: moderate the first message of every topic this person starts

?

And the message made it through.

?

Hello,

A message was sent to the group /g/brcg-list from corwyn@... that needs to be approved.

Subject: Test Message

I have moderated myself.

Yet another data point. I can't approve the messages. I check them, hit approve. They uncheck, but do not get sent to the list.

That's even more peculiar. They shouldn't uncheck, they should vanish from Pending, to appear in Messages.

As I mentioned off-list, I sent a second message but it has not appeared in Messages (nor by email).

Curiouser and curiouser, said Alice.

Don; you seem to have investigated this as far as is possible, so I think now is the time for a referral to support. Your researches have been worthwhile because you now have a far more detailed picture than you had earlier and that ought to make Mark's job much easier in pinpointing the source of the trouble.

Please let us know how turns turn out, including any explanation that is forthcoming.

Chris

Resolution of the issue from support...
?

"I have tracked down and fixed the problem. The issue was that the record in the database where we keep the next message number for your group had not been updated for some reason after the last successful message was posted. So we ended up with a unique constraint violation when trying to add a new message with an already existing message number.

I've never actually seen this happen before in the system. Please let me know if you have any other issues. "
