Bouncing emails.
I am the owner and moderator of 8 groups with around 1500 members. I use Thunderbird for emails.?I am having problems with our New Zealand telecom email provider, xtra. They accept emails from groups.io if I don't put attachments in the attachment box in Thunderbird. If I do put an attachment in the box, xtra rejects the email. Consequently the members account is "bounced". I have?since?found that?if I put the attachment into the body of the email, then xtra will accept the email. Now I have a lot of members with "bounced accounts.
My question is; can I "unbounce" members accounts? Or do I have to contact each member directly with instructions? Barry. |

If you know how to do that, it's a good idea to contact these subscribers ahead of time, telling them what to do.? At that point you can force groups.io to send them a new bounce probe:

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe problem I have now is, I will have to email all the members
with xtra addresses, and get them to unbounce their accounts. I
cannot send through groups.io, as they will not receive them. I
will need to email them direct. I think they may think that the
message from groups to unbounce their accounts is spam and they
have deleted it. Because of the problem with xtra, there will be
several hundred addresses that have been bounced. What link do I send to them to unbounce their account?

Only groups.io can provide the individual links to unbounce their accounts. I suggest emailing them and telling them to be on the lookout for a bounce probe from Groups.io... in their inbox or in their junk/spam folders and to reply to it when found. Then send them all a bounce probe via Groups.io.

the above will do no good unless the underlying problem has been corrected, so you may want to cover that in the initial email you send. Barry,
I think any link to Groups.io will do. IIRC a member with Bouncing or Bounced status will see a red banner at the top of each Groups.io page, with instructions for sending themselves a bounce probe. Unbouncing an account necessarily starts with receipt of a bounce probe - that demonstrates that the person is now able to receive at least that message from Groups.io. Ok, so how do I find the solution to my members being bounced with a 550.5.1.0... error code?

Bill,
That depends. Are they attempting to post to your group by email, and getting a message back from Groups.io with that code? If so have a look in your group's Activity Log to see why their postings (or replies) were rejected. Or are they listed in you're group's Members list with a blue (or red) "B" for bouncing (or bounced)? If so look in the Email Delivery History tab of their membership page to see why their email service rejected a message from Groups.io. Tell us the text of the Reason that goes with the error code. My question is how do I find the underlying cause?

This is a private group - member to member only. Email delivery history of a message being sent to a member shows this

That happens to be irrelevant to the bouncing question.

Ok. So did you have a look? Cox says:
"The sending IP address has been temporarily blocked by Cox due
?to exhibiting spam-like behavior. ?The block duration varies depending on reputation and other factors, ?but will not exceed 24 hours. Inspect email traffic for potential spam, ?and retry email delivery." Of note is the code CDRBL - "RBL" often stands for "Real-time Blackhole List". The IP address cited (66.175.222.12) is Groups.io's outbound email server. So Cox relied on an RBL which apparently listed Groups.io as a source of spam. Some email services rely on low-quality RBL services whose data may be out of date or simply wrong. ?
To resolve this your members will have to ask Cox to whitelist Groups.io as a valid email list sender. If Cox won't do that, then the members will have to put up with losing the occasional message, or switch to a more savvy email service.

Hi Bruce,
All of my bouncing members with one exception are yahoo email.? I doubt the problem is with yahoo, don't you?? There's an option in the activity box to send an email.? Can I do that?? Will they get it?? I don't know why they'd be bouncing, but my hunch is their dogs are long gone and they don't even want to be on the group anymore. Thanks, Terri |

All of my bouncing members with one exception are yahoo email.? I doubt the problem is with yahoo, don't you?The predominance of Yahoo being your "bouncing members" provider may be no more than the reflection of the fact that Yahoo is a major supplier of email addresses and if you look a bit further you might find that your non - bouncing members are mainly Yahoo as well. To get a better picture you will need to look at the Email Delivery History of each individual bouncing member to find out why it is bouncing and when it started.? IME the commonest reason is This mailbox is disabled or something similar; the people concerned may have changed their mail service provider or be no longer be with us. By looking at how long they have been bouncing, and by looking at each individual's Activity History you can see when they last posted something on your group. On the basis of that information you can make a balanced decision on whether or not to delete them from your membership list. As a general guide you should leave any "Blue Bounces" in place as they might come back to life at some point, but "Red Bounces" are fair game for deletion. It can be a bit time consuming but occasional general housekeeping is all part of being an Owner or Moderator; to use a clich¨¦ "it goes with the territory". Chris |

Chris, I'm mostly "bouncing via system", whatever that is.? I've only gone through 10 but only one is disabled mailbox.
They could have been bouncing on yahoo for all I know, I never checked because it was impossible to check.? I sent the probe, I'd like to be able to email the newer members but it looks like I can't do that.? I might just email them from my email as was suggested.? The very old members I don't know about, although most were still on individual mail.? this is a pita, to put it mildly. Thanks, Terri |

If they are marked with a red B then Groups.io has given up on trying to reach them. You can manually send further bounce probes of course, but at this point I usually send an email directly to the address from my personal address (just in case the problem is with messages coming from Groups.io). If that bounces then I remove the address from the list.

It was my experience, and I think many people found this as well, that a new list transferred from Yahoo will lose around 10% of the subscribers in the first few months. Most of these are addresses that have been bouncing for a long time, but Yahoo failed to notice. Also, a few people who are no longer interested will take this opportunity to unsubscribe. Terri,
I sent the probe, I'd like to be able to email the newer members butYou can, right from the Bouncing list. Though if the bounce reason for a given address indicates a permanent issue (address is "disabled", or "not found" or similar) the attempt may be futile. For a batch of members, put checkmarks on their row in the list, then in the Actions menu select "Send Message". That will open a message composition page. The From address is a drop-list, the default is to send from the group's +owner address but you can send from your own address instead. One caveat, as Jonathan noted, is that the address may be bouncing because the receiving service doesn't like Groups.io (finds it on a blacklist or whatever), and may block this type of message as well. In some cases sending it from the +owner address might have a better chance of getting through because the message will be both From and delivered by Groups.io - which some services treat as "more authentic" than a message with mismatched From address and delivery service.
