Adding a group of members to multiple subgroups at one time
I'm getting ready to finally transfer my main Yahoo group over, and I need to add the members to 3 different subgroups (files and such to only 1 of them).? I figured that I could request 3 different transfers from Yahoo specifying each subgroup, but I don't think that Mark would appreciate it if I can do it another way.? I don't think that I can do a bulk add (rats), but I have over 400 members in the group so doing them 1 by 1 isn't feasible.? Is there a way that I'm missing to do 20 or 50 at a time?
And for those who think I should just have one subgroup - yep, considered that, but need to split up functions and mainly messaging into different groups. We are starting with the same members, but it won't stay that way. Thanks Beth |
I think the easiest thing would be to transfer everything to the main group here.? I'd include members since they'd need to be members of that to join a subgroup anyway.? Even on a free group, you can direct add folks to a subgroup.? There is a temporary restriction once you add 20 members in a 24 hour period, but Mark usually approves those in a short time.? If you just add all to a subgroup at once, it would only be one delay.? A few folks have found that on subsequent adds, there doesn't seem to be a delay.
If the files will be going in a subgroup, you could make that a separate transfer request once you have the members there that you want.? Remember that any files where the member isn't present will be attributed to you. Thanks Duane.?
Interesting suggestion. My concern is having to manually add over 400 people to multiple subgroups; no matter if 2 or 3. Yes the files need to go to a subgroup so I¡¯m not sure what adding them only to the main group will achieve. Fortunately we are a premium group, but that doesn¡¯t help during the transfer. ?I¡¯d give a lot to have a bulk add...... Thanks Beth |
Beth,
A better general description of what you plan to do might help us figure out a better option.? Will everyone be a member of one of the subgroups?? Will that be the subgroup where you want the files? There's some basic information for direct adding many people to the main group at /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Direct-Add-From-Yahoo, but it may apply to a subgroup as well.? You could do that after the transfer. Beth, I'm getting ready to finally transfer my main Yahoo group over, and I need to add the members to 3 different subgroups (files and such to only 1 of them).? Do an initial transfer that copies all of the Y!Group members into the primary group.
True, but it does after the transfer. You can bulk add batches of members to selected subgroups by doing a Direct Add in the primary group. You'll get an error result for the Add to the primary group (already a member), but each given address will be added to the subgroup(s) checked off in the Direct Add form. With my 600-member PTA group I was able to put 100 into one subgroup and 500 into another subgroup with just two Direct Add operations (I copied the email addresses in from an Excel sheet where I organized them into which be added to which subgroup). If all of the Y!Group content goes into one subgroup and not the primary then you can specify that as a separate transfer - but do it after you've transferred the members and Direct Add'ed them into that subgroup. Many thanks to both of you.
To summarize exactly what I need to end up with: I have a group in yahoo that has members and files that I need in GIO I have one main group in GIO with 3 subgroups that need to start with the same members in all 3 subgroups One of those subgroups also needs the files. I think what I'm hearing is that I should:
Again, thanks for the help and advice Beth |
Beth,
Exclude the files from this transfer, unless you want copies in the primary as well as the specific subgroup.
If your group has more than 1000 members it is easiest to do this from the Groups.io group after the transfer. Probably better to use this list anyway, to avoid complication with bouncing members.
For this purpose, only the email address is needed, one per line. The Display Name for each member will have already been set by the transfer, and the display name in each subgroup will perforce be the same as in the primary group.
Excluding the members this time. Looks good. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
Thanks so much Shal,
I'm starting the process now.? Exclude the files from this transfer, unless you want copies in the primary as well as the specific subgroup. One clarification - when I moved a yahoo group several months ago to a subgroup here, I did not end up with files in both the main and the subgroup - only the subgroup. Something may have changed so I'll play it safe, but thought I would mention it.? I used the subgroup as the "to" group if that made a difference. Fingers crossed Beth |

Once you get the primary group transfer started (without the files), I'd probably wait a couple of days and then go ahead and initiate the files transfer to the subgroup, too. The two days should be more than enough time to Direct Add the subscribers to your subgroups before the files arrive. Assuming that the transfers occur in queue order, this should save you some time waiting for the files. In the unlikely event that the transfers go out of order and the files arrive too early (i.e.: without proper file ownership assignments), no harm done -- just delete them and do it again. Good luck! An update if anyone finds this when searching.? I finally got the members moved to the main group tonight. I created the text file and did a direct add from main checking my subgroups - and immediately hit the "you have reached the limit" message even though all of these members are already in the main group. It makes sense, but needs to be factored in that there is another delay in the process if you are crazy enough to want to mass direct add to multiple subgroups at one time.
Again, many thanks to Bruce and Shal. Beth |
