Can a Normal user determine his/her posting privileges?

? Can a normal user determine his/her posting privileges?? I can see my personal
user settings, but I can't 'see' my posting privilege/setting.? For example, for
this very group (GMF) I am a regular user ... and any posts I do to it take
noticeably longer to appear in the list of messages than many of my other
groups.? The ones that are fast are -not- only the ones that I'm an Owner or
Moderator.

? Also, when I look at the list of my groups ... some of them have a "P" next
to my name - and others do not?? Hovering over the "P" pops "can post".
But I have posting privileges to all of my groups ... at least all of my posts
show up ... eventually.

Jim,

Can a normal user determine his/her posting privileges?
Yes, but you have to look a couple of places.

For example, for this very group (GMF) I am a regular user ... and any
posts I do to it take noticeably longer to appear in the list of
messages than many of my other groups.
Start by looking at the group's home page. Notice that this group says "Posts to this group require approval from the moderators." That means that absent an override to make you non-moderated, your messages will be moderated.

Also, when I look at the list of my groups ... some of them have a
"P" next to my name - and others do not? Hovering over the "P" pops
"can post".
That means that in those groups you have the override privilege which allows your messages to post without moderation. See also:

Shal,

? Thanks for your answers.
? There is one detail about it I'm unlcear about.? Some/many?groups are "all
posts are moderated until n messages have been sent".
? I know?those groups automatically change to unmoderated?? Will or won't?
there?won't be a "P" for those groups?

? Sooooo - is there a reason why "all posts are moderated" for this group (GMF)?
I've been a member of this group for about a year (more? less?) and would
expect that my membership would have been changed to unmoderated by now ...
or is there a reason why this group 'just stays on all posts are moderated' for
everybody?

This question intrigues me, too. I've always attributed the lack of flame-wars in this group to the collective restraint of the subscribers, but perhaps we owe more of that to moderator intervention than I realize. :-)

That said, it is Shal's group and he doesn't owe anybody an answer.

Jim,

been sent". I know those groups automatically change to unmoderated?
Will or won't there won't be a "P" for those groups?
There won't be.

When you've had N consecutive accepted posts the mechanism dosen't change you to the unmoderated override, it changes you to "Default group policy" - which most likely in such groups will not be Moderated (won't have that box checked in the group's settings).

It is an unlikely combination, but the Moderated checkbox and the New Users Moderated checkbox are not mutually exclusive. So you could come off your N new user moderation only to be moderated because the whole group is.

About the only reason a group might be set that way that I can imagine might be if it is in the midst of quelling a flame war or other disturbance. In that case the use of Moderated would likely be temporary, with New User Moderated checked but not Moderated being the normal situation.

Sooooo - is there a reason why "all posts are moderated" for this
group (GMF)?
Refer to the group guidelines. Fourth bullet.

I've been a member of this group for about a year (more? less?) and
would expect that my membership would have been changed to unmoderated
by now ...
It's nothing personal; no one gets the unmoderated override here, not even the group owners.
