Send "automatic" files to pending/new members

In Yahoogroups it was possible to send a file automatically to pending or new members. I used to send an automatic welcome message with some rules to new members, and a questionnaire to pending members that they needed to fill out before they could become a member. I haven't found that option in groups.io, is there a feature like this?
Thanks, Winnie

Yes, but. The only notice that can be sent monthly is the Group Guidelines notice. The others are sent either by hand or under various conditions automatically. You can’t schedule files to be sent periodically as you could in Y!G.

after you click on Member Notices, you have to click on New Notice… then type in whatever your notice is, give it a name like ‘Pending Subscription’. then click on Add Notice?

p.s. You can create automatic notices for welcome, rejected subscription, and various other scenarios. The rules are typically put in the Group Guidelines notice and are sent under separate cover. Those will also appear on the group's home page under a tab on the left sidebar, so they're always available to members who access the site. They can also be made to appear publicly there to non-members. For a questionnaire for pending members, use the Pending Subscription notice.

Thanks so much Cherrill! Some things are a bit hidden it seems ;)

J_Catlady

They're not hidden. Go to the Help pages, available at the bottom of every page, and see Member Notices. There is lots of other information there, too.?

Perhaps the Help page should be clickable at the top, rather than at the bottom, of every page. In that sense, the information is not hidden but not always evident to people and nobody seems to know it's there.

In my YG group we have 2 separate files which are sent to each new member on joining and monthly to the group: a netiquette file + a notice with all the basic technical info to manage the group (e-mail commands, how-to, etc.).

For my relocated group I am using the Group Guidelines as netiquette file, but I couldn't find any other type of notice suitable for the tech scenario to be sent both on joining and monthly.

I put some basic info in the welcome message, but this can't be sent monthly in the group.

I am now creating a wiki page on purpose, but that can be read only on site.
I think it would be useful to have another type of notice, apart from Group Guidelines, with the 'send monthly' option.

It was a fight just to get the Group Guidelines notice. I know, because I was the one who suggested it and was the main one pushing for it. I can guarantee that you won't get Mark to implement more than one notice that you can send monthly. Whatever you want sent monthly, put it in the Group Guidelines. For anything else you will have to use the calendar.

why not put it in the calendar then.
we have a monthly rules reminder that goes out to the group every first of every month.

Sure, put it in the calendar. That can work. I myself am not partial to using the calendar for sending text because the calendar makes it sound like an event.

Oh! I didn't even remotely think about Calendar because I don't use it on Yahoo and, as Catlady says, it sounds like something event related.
Mumble, mumble...
I'll see. Thank you, Cherrill.
And many thanks to J_Catlady for persuading Mark to create a monthly notice. I had no idea it was such a fight.

You are definitely right about that Cherrill, so far I'm very pleased with groups.io after all the troubles I've had with yahoo

If you think about it, if there are 200,000 groups, it automatically means an additional 200,000 messages sent, delivered, not delivered and returned, and stored in archives. Stored in archives means 2,400,000 automatically stored messages every year. I suspect few of these are ever read, particularly if they don’t change from month to month.

I don’t send monthly reminders to my lists because I like to maintain a casual tone and not scare people about doing something wrong. One list is “neighbors talking to neighbors replacing the front porch and the back fence.” Other lists are discussion lists and topic focused but I like the informal possibilities of email discussion and the ability to be personal. I step in when things go on for too long.

Whenever I post a “rule,” lists tend to go dead for a few days. A hard rule like “Address ideas and facts and don’t characterize other people personally. Discuss ways to keep Red Dog contained or share funny stories about Red Dog escaping — don’t characterize Red Dog’s owner as lazy and stupid.”

I ban press releases, for-sale notices except by neighbors, and announcements of class or theater schedules. Recommendations are welcome. New businesses can post for 6 months and then only for special events. That’s all in the description of the group, and I find it’s more effective to remind people of a rule when it gets stretched or broken rather than routinely. I remind members off line first and then on list if it’s becoming a trend.

To each their own. One of the reasons I pressed for a group guidelines tab on group sites is that according to the TOU, users explicitly agree to follow the guidelines of any individual group they join. Because of that, it seems important that any existing group guidelines be easily available to members. You can send them monthly or not, your choice. You can have group guidelines or not, your choice. If you have them, they do appear on the site.

My group is involved with critical veterinary medical situations and we do not allow any statements or advice that is not scientifically backed up. That kind of advice can harm, or even kill, cats.

Our rules comprise about 2,000 words and are not appropriate for a group description on the home page, and our group does not "go dead" after the monthly guidelines are posted.?

For monthly reminders, I use a hashtag that causes the message to be deleted after a month.? Reduces the clutter and folks won't find old information, thinking it's current.
