New option to move a Yahoo group to: forums.group
I received an email this morning about a forums based platform called
forums.group: I plan to stay with groups.io but this is another option and has more plans than GIO does. I thought I'd mention it in case some people are waiting until almost the very end, which is in a few days. I haven't checked out their service but I think their marketing plan started way too late since most have already moved their Yahoo groups to a different platform already. I did note that the free plans don't allow posts by email, so that will kill the idea for most people. I don't know if this is a recurring fee, but their premium level allows email hosting and other useful features and they price it at $90. I haven't dug any deeper than one level into their website to find out if it's $90 annually or a one time fee. They have other services that you use up-front, and one of them claims to bring the message archive back: Plan 3: Archive Forum With Messages, Files, Photos If you have an inactive Yahoo Group and simply want to make the existing archives available online without restarting discussions, this is ideal. The messages, files and photos are made available with full search functions available as well as the similar topics function that cross-references each post. This level is typical ordered for INACTIVE groups that just want to make their archives available online for reference purposes. The forum contains all the messages and members that have posted in the past, but silent members have been omitted. We will not be sending login details to the members, yet they can use the lost password feature to reset their password. As this type of forum is designed for archiving, we will leave it online for at least 10 years even without further activity. I would bet that this would only be for those groups that allowed a web group to archive all posts (some group was doing that just before Yahoo closed message storage). I'll let someone else with more time to look into this further. I've been working some 50-60 hour work weeks so time is harder to find right now than it was months ago. I made this mistaken recently when copy/pasting information from one IO group to the pages of another IO group: I edited the text of URLs, but the underlying hyperlink remained the same. For example, if you typed "/g/Endicott-Gen" in the Endicott-Gen group, and pressed space after it, Groups.io converts it into a hyperlink for "/g/Endicott-Gen". But if you then copy that group's text to another group and you only edit the "Endicott-Gen" part of the visible text to "Howard-Gen", the underlying hyperlink still points to "/g/Endicott-Gen". When you edit the text of a hyperlink, you must remove the hyperlink (click the link and select the icon that disconnects the hyperlink) and then reconnect it (e.g. by moving to the end of it and pressing space). Kyle,
They clicked on the following hyperlink I provided them:Typed out in plain text as they were in your message, they each seem to go to the respective group. I have been messaging members of the Yahoogroups.com forums that theyPerhaps when creating your messages to the Yahoo Groups you created the message as formatted text, rather than plain text. In which case it would be possible for you to have accidentally given the same address for both links, even though the display text of the links were different. That's just a guess of course, but it could be verified or falsified by examination of the View Source (or Show Original) of one of those messages as received back from your groups. Or maybe even in the sent copy. In Thunderbird that's Ctrl+U (or View | Message Source). Groups.io website problem
Hi,
I have a number of email forums/groups I have transferred from Yahoogroups.com.?? I have been messaging members of the Yahoogroups.com forums that they need to migrate to the new forums at groups.io.? A number of them have run into a problem (and I have verified the problem).? They clicked on the following hyperlink I provided them: /g/Howard-Gen and the groups.io website sends them to one of my other forums: /g/Endicott-Gen This, of course, does not make any sense to me.? Does anyone have a solution for this problem?? Thank you Kyle Elwood kreede@... |

Re: Problems adding members/shutting down/restarting
Hi Duane, Thank you for this information! Given that there are now already 79 members of the group and that I have sent out the 700+ invitations, deleting the group now doesn't seem to be the most logical step to take. So I DID contact the support people you suggested and asked them to cancel my delete request. However, you may be correct that I failed to confirm the deletion. I don't remember. ??? ??? ??? On a Basic/free group (or a trial Premium group), you can only invite folks, have them use the +subscribe address, or use the join/apply button on the group home page.? You could upgrade for a month to use Direct Add to get started if you want. Have a look at the Help Center and read some of the manuals there.? Problems adding members/shutting down/restarting
Hello, With Yahoo Groups shutting down in a few days, our mailing list Teaching Jobs in France, which send out job offers for teaching jobs (many adjunct or part-time), needed to migrate to another platform, and both Groups.io and Google Groups were the most recommended. Doing a little research, I found that Groups.io had some very favorable reviews, so it was chosen. In creating the group just about 24 hours ago, there was the possibility of adding ALL the previous 706 members of our group, which I downloaded from Yahoo Groups. However, I didn't immediately add them and clicked on the next button. The new Teaching Jobs in France group was created and a few hours later approved. However, I saw that I could no longer ADD members, just SEND invitations. Wanting to go back, I decided to delete the group (of which I was the only member at the time) and create a new one of the same name. But when I tried to use the same email address in reforming our group, the site said I couldn't because it had already been taken. Assuming that my removal of the group needed approval, I have been waiting, but nothing has happened and the original group still exists. AND, in the meantime, several dozen of our members have signed up to join this new group. So I went ahead and copied the email addresses of our 700+ members for them to be sent invitations. Because of the numbers, however, we are waiting for approval before the invitations are sent out. SO, where are we? Will our group be shut down, needing to be recreated? Or will it go on functioning as if I had not chosen to delete it? Any insights you can provide would be much appreciated! ??? ??? ??? Many thanks, ??? ??? ??? All my groups' Calendars are still displaying as blank, but one of my groups just sent a Reminder 8 minutes ago on time (from its blank Calendar).
