Yes, we asked that everything be transferred. Will see what happens over the next few days.

Did you specify that everything should be copied when you requested the transfer?? That's the only thing I can think of on your end that might make a difference.? Could also just be lag because of the large number of groups that are being transferred.

Re: Email Integration

Aaron,

But I am getting non-deliverable replies to each
attempted send. (it's the address with the
group_name+int+xxx+yyyyyyyyyy)
Can you give us more detail on the non-deliverable reply? Somewhere in the body of that reply should be a three-digit code followed by a sentence or two describing the problem.

Re: Members list and Directory #howtoguide

Neil,

I am afraid I am confused about the use of each and how to enable
members of my group to view either or both
The Members list includes all members, and includes subscription information such as their email address and their delivery settings. I suspect many groups would make this available to moderators only as a question of member privacy. In my classmates groups I do make the Members list available to members - we all know each other in person anyway so sharing our email addresses is a benefit rather than a risk.

The Directory contains profile information (picture and display name) for each member and is a link to their group profile (where they may provide details like their location, a personal web site, and comments about themselves (a bio or whatever they wish to write).

When viewed by a moderator the Directory includes all members, even those who have not set up a profile. When viewed by a member the Directory includes only those members who have entered some profile information. Adding profile information is entirely voluntary, and in most of my groups few members have done so.

The controls for who can see the Members list and the Directory are in the Privacy section of the Group's Settings page. For the Directory the settings are
o Subscribers,
o Moderators and Owners, or
o Member Directory is disabled.
For the Members list the settings are similar, but in place of disabled is "Owners only".

Re: Transfer of Files and Old Messages

Tim,

Our group was just transferred and the member list went very smoothly.
There haven't been any of the old messages or files and photos copied
yet, is that normal or did I forget to do something?
It is normal for the content to take a bit longer to copy over.

Usually not too much longer, but Yahoo limits how often an IP address can access their systems, so this limits how fast Groups.io can copy things. That, together with the large number of groups trying to transfer right now may explain it.

Also, Yahoo Groups as a service has been having some operational problems (prompting the large number of group transfers) and that may itself be further slowing the copy process.

Re: Repeating Calendar Events

Thanks for your help Duane, and for your quick fix.

Re: Repeating Calendar Events

I found a 'quick fix' for the problem.? When editing the event for a particular month, remove the Event Repeats checkmark in the Repeats section.? That seems to make it all work as I would expect.? It will still ask for which events in the series to change and selecting This Event Only does it.

This may be the way it was designed, but is a bit confusing.? Like you, I would expect it to only change the one and not add a new one, but having the Event Repeats turned on is causing a new series.? If support verifies this, please let us know.

Re: Transfer of Files and Old Messages

When we transferred a group earlier in the year there was apparently a
bug in the software and the photos didn't move over at first but
arrived a few days later. I had assumed that problem would have been
sorted by now. My second group will be transferring shortly so will see
what happens there.

Re: Repeating Calendar Events

I just did a quick test and it looks like you've found a bug to report to [email protected]? As additional information: Changing a later event in the series, say next month, also adds a new event for the duration of the time.

Repeating Calendar Events

I recently moved my group from Yahoo. So far so good, but I have a problem setting up a repeating event.
I use the Calendar to remind members in advance of a monthly talk. I set up an event with a monthly repeat to finish after 4 repeats. The event contained general info - location, reminder times in particular. I then selected the first event in the series and added the title of the talk and speaker for that month then updated 'this event only'. But when I checked in the next month's calendar I had the original event PLUS a new series of events containing the details that I had added to the first event. I tried it several times with the same result.
Is this a known problem?

Re: digests on IO

Rachel,

We like to time certain messages to appear at or near the top of
digests.
This may prove frustrating.

How long after 12 messages are posted do you get the digest? Is it
immediate like yahoo used to be?
It is immediate, but it isn't necessarily the same for all members.

Unlike Yahoo Groups, in Groups.io each member's digest is built individually. Members using the Mute or Follow features may not receive as many messages in a given span of time as other members, and so they'll reach the threshold at a different time.

Do messages in the digest start from after the messages included in
the summary?
I don't know if the digests and the summary are synchronized in any way, other than perhaps by coincidence of timing when they are generated. Normally a person would receive one or the other and not be in a position to compare them.

Re: "This page isn't working"

Rachel,

Have you had any members not be able to reach the group due to too
many redirects?
No, that's a novel one. I'm not even sure what it means.

I guess one thing would be to verify that they've got the group address correct. And/or to see if they can give you a screen shot of what happened.

The page says This page isn't working and to clear their cookies --
they do -- but they still can't access the group.
That's even odder.

After clearing their cookies they'd have to log in to Groups.io again in order to access the members-only content of your group (photos, files, ... anything not set to public access).

I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding at the root of this.

Re: getting list of moderated members

Jonathan,

It looks like I can set them to the New User Moderated state. Would
this mean that they would then be unmoderated again once they had
posted the requisite number of approved messages as with any new
subscriber?
Yes, that is correct.

For this purpose "new" means that they have the "Override: new user moderated" setting in for their Posting Privilege, and you can manually make that setting in their subscription to cause the count of approvals to apply.

Specifically, when their count of approvals is reached, their Posting Privilege will be automatically changed to "Default group policy" - which effectively unmoderates them if the group's "Moderated" option is unchecked.

That might be a good way to handle them. If they don't post anything,
no harm done, if they do and all is well then they become unmoderated
again.
I concur.

After transferring one of my Yahoo Groups here I went through and changed any members that had transferred as "Override: moderated" to "Override: new user moderated", and that has been working as expected. The few of them who've posted enough since the transfer are now unmoderated (i.e. "Default group policy").

This would have been less effort if there were a "Bulk" way to make settings changes. One can visually scan for them on each page of the Members list, checkmark them, and then use the Actions menu to do more than one at a time. But that's still more tedious than pasting a list of addresses selected in Excel, or being able to sort the list by privilege.

Re: what are Yahoo limits to transfers?

Arno,

When eMailing for the transfer, one can chose not to have the group
messages transferred.

Can the member list be transferred now and the messages in, say, 3 - 4
monthe time?
I don't see why not, technically. It would be up to Mark to do that for you or not. You'd have to let the transfer agent know when you request the transfer.

One potential issue would be having the messages posted in the Groups.io group (if you allow any) end up before or intermingled with the transferred messages.

That is, I think the "Date" order of transferred messages in the group's archives is effectively the date that the message was added to the archive, not the date it might have originally been posted in the Yahoo Group. Or said another way, it is really Message Number order.

To make suggestions, you need to post them on the beta group where Mark will see them.? This could likely be incorporated with the TODO item of quoting when a moderator replies to a member question via the owner address.

Re: Merge two groups #transfer #howtoguide

Jeff,

I own two groups.io that are part of the same organization -
essentially different department. How would I go about merging the
two?
I think that's something you'd have to ask [email protected] to help you with. At least you would if you want to preserve the Messages and other content of both groups.

Would you want to merge them together into the same group, or perhaps convert them both into subgroups of a primary group for the organization as a whole?

If you use subgroups all the members of both subgroups would perforce be members of the primary group. This would give you the flexibility to send a message to only one subgroup or the other when appropriate, or to send a message to everyone via the primary group. The downside is the additional complexity of managing three groups instead of one, and potential confusion by the members as to whether they should be posting to just their department or to the organization as a whole.

I do it through email.?So I can in fact see the message in another window and I can copy paste the offending thing, or make reference to it if I need to.

ruthie,

is it possible to see the exact text of the rejected message, while ?> writing the rejection note?

Not any easy way. Which annoys me too.

I try to remember to copy the member's message before clicking Reject, then paste it into the box. Or else I open another window in my browser to look at it.

On Yahoo, I sort by the Date Joined column. That will bring up recent subscribers who are still on moderated status.

Re: getting list of moderated members

You can currently download the Members (on the Members page) and the entire message archive (on the Settings page.)? On the TODO list, Mark has an item to be able to break the archives into smaller pieces, but right now it's all or nothing.? The only way to get photos and files is one at a time.? You might want to suggest on beta@ that there be a 'complete download' or 'group backup' option available.
