Transfering members

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have transferred a small Yahoo group over here for testing purposes and we're pretty happy, so I'm setting up a test group for a large Yahoo group.? I would like some input on the user transfer part of things.?

?

We have some 1400+ members on the rolls, but I know that several have passed on and families haven't removed their email addresses.? And I have many in my community who are not computer literate, so many will simply rejoin if they change email addresses, so they are on the rolls multiple times.? And we have members who joined years ago never to be heard from again.? So I am thinking this is a good time to clear the slate and had been thinking of requiring that people rejoin on their own or email me and request to be invited.? Either of these options is more work for me, so I am wondering what the downside is to simply inviting all 1400+ to move with us.?

?

If they don't get the invite and aren't using their email address any longer for any reason, is this just a no-op for me?? I won't ever see them on the new group.? Their invites will simply go into cyberspace somewhere?? Or if they get the invite and opt not to opt-in, that, too, is a no-op from my perspective??

?

Was wondering what others' experiences have been along these lines.?

?

Thanks.

Re: #howtoguide Files #howtoguide

Nancy, PDF is a file format - the letters that follow the dot in a file name such as? infofile.pdf
The options you mention here are storage sources where the file would be found. For example, you might look in the files on your ipad to find infofile.pdf

Need to keep the apples and oranges straight :>)

Yes, just "Export." It basically means "save as." It will just create a pdf file (or text file, if that's what you want).?

It is easy. At the top of your Pages document there is a ... menu (dots). Click and choose Export. Choose PDF. Save it somewhere on your iPad and then upload to files as usual.?

My original Yahoo groups were Camp and another (which in io terms is a subgroup) but in Yahoo was a complete other group. I opened a new Yahoo group called Camp2 and started asking original Camp members to join.

Camp2 has never been able to be completely functional. I, personally, can¡¯t add my own photos, start a file, start a poll. As owner that¡¯s not good. Some can, some - about 6 have tried and can¡¯t. ?I can¡¯t change cover or banner photos.

Our original owner died, I tried keeping the 1728 members together. After the fiasco of the new group trials & errors I have 370, I¡¯m afraid I¡¯ll lose them all with ¡°another new group¡±. I joined io to get out of trouble.

I¡¯ll admit I haven¡¯t a clue about what the last one is and iCloud is only on for storage.

I¡¯ll have to go read more, I just found a Pages update that talks about Export - and plain text & pdf. I would never have clicked on Export (Export where? and to whom?)?

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This change log for the last three weeks:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

* Upgraded and rebooted all instances with new kernel patched to
fix the Meltdown bug.
That security bug has been much in the news this week. It isn't often that a security flaw is found that affects web services big and small as well as personal computing devices. My Win 10 machines, home and work, have taken the patch for it.

* Removed List-Post headers from emails because of Thunderbird.
This is the one I focused on three weeks ago. Since apparently only the Thunderbird email interface did anything with this header, and what it did I think was the wrong thing, I'm just as happy it is gone.

However that does leave Thunderbird users without a one-click way to reply off-list in groups that have the Reply-To set for group replies. Instead a copy/paste of the sender's address is required - plus manual fix-up if the sender is from one of the DMARC'd email services, such as Yahoo mail.

Comments about these others are also welcome:

* SECURITY: Fixed issue where an attacker could create an account
with someone else's email address (assuming it didn't exist) and get
it confirmed.
* BUGFIX: Very long text attachments could cause the search indexer
to ignore some messages during indexing.
* BUGFIX: When editing a markdown formatted message, the markdown
formatting was not preserved.
* BUGFIX: In the activity log, the wrong person was displayed for
banned/unbanned/removed records.
* SECURITY: Added X-Frame-Options HTTP header to prevent
clickjacking.
* BUGFIX: Some bounces to enterprise groups were not being processed
correctly.
* INTERNAL: Upgrade pgx package to fix Postgres replication timeout
bug.

Please call out any you find significant.

I personally think plain-text files are a PITA. Word as well as Pages (I think? I'm almost sure - haven't used it in awhile) will allow you, when saving a file, to "save as" various formats, including pdf. I see no reason not to use a pdf file most or all of the time, simply because they're very readable.?

Re: #integration new io group question #integration

Nancy,

We were three Yahoo groups, when I have my main group moved can I also
add (combine) the second (like a sub group) into one io group?
Yes. At step 2 in the transfer process you would simply name the same Groups.io group as the target for the transfer.

Or, instead of merging them into a single primary Groups.io group, you can create subgroups to your primary group, and transfer some of your Yahoo groups into subgroups of your primary Groups.io group.

What if it¡¯s the same people in all groups, will that mess up the new
group having a lot of the same members.
No problem. Any email address that's already a member of the Groups.io group will simply be skipped when processing the transfer of an additional Yahoo Group.

Can I move everyone from original Yahoo AND new Yahoo AND the sub
group
I've kind of lost track of all the Yahoo Groups you're speaking of, but I don't think there's any technical limit to how many you can transfer into the same Groups.io group. There are no Subgroups in Yahoo Groups, so all of them are on an equal footing in terms of being copied into a Groups.io group.

What if a handful of us were already in the io group (testing)?
As above, that's not a problem. The already subscribed email addresses won't be transferred again - no duplication or other problems will arise.

Re: #howtoguide Files #howtoguide

Nancy,

I¡¯m on iPad, what app (or something) do I need to have that any member
can read?
The most compatible file format is plain text. In Windows the standard editor for plain text is called Notepad. I'm not sure on an iPad, but possibly your Pages app can either Save As or Export in plain text format.

If formatting (bold or italics, font choices, etc.) is important for the legibility of your files then I second J's suggestion of using PDF format. PDF (Portable Document Format) was originated by Adobe, but they've made the specification public and now many apps can export to it. Perhaps your Pages app can do that. In Windows 10 there's also a standard printer driver that will allow any app to print to a PDF file. Again, I don't use iPad, but there's almost certainly a way for you to produce PDF files on iPad also.

I would save files that you want to post to the group as pdf files from now on.

Actually I¡¯ve already had members from the original Yahoo group join a new Yahoo group. It isn¡¯t working out. So I¡¯m making an io group that has photos & Files that work for everyone. Can I move everyone from original Yahoo AND new Yahoo AND the sub group

Re: What does NC ("not confirmed") next to their email address mean? (was: question)

J_Catlady

I don't see any "resend confirmationemail" option. Where do I find it,
I can't tell you because since my group became a premium group, ll I can do is "confirm" a member. But the option to "resend confirmation email" was, as I recall, either at the bottom of the member page, and/or possibly through the member list when you click the member and select from the "action" dropdown. I'm fairly sure it's only available via the former.

Re: Change email address error - that email address is already registered

Al,

Now I want to change the email address ...
You, a group owner/moderator, cannot change a member's email address. Only the member may do that him/herself, via their Account page.

and I get the message *That email address is already registered*
The member will get that same error if he/she has already created an account at groups.io with the other address. He/she cannot have two accounts using the same address, and at present there is no mechanism to merge two accounts into one.

Note, a Groups.io account is distinct from a membership (aka subscription) in a particular group. An address (account) can be a member of any number of groups.

How can I clear the email address that so I can now update the new
member back to their original email address
You can't do that, but the member can log in under their original email address and join your group from that address. To do that, have the member:

o Go to Groups.io and if they are logged in, log out.
o Click "Log In" in the upper right corner.
o Chose either "Forget your password?" to set a new one, or
"Email me a link to log in" to log in without a password.
o Either way, type in the original address.

Groups.io will send him/her an email message with a link in it.

o Go to his/her email interface.
o Find the message (look in the Spam or Junk folder if needed).
o Click on that link.

This will bring him/her back to Groups.io, logged in under the original address. If he/she chose "Forget your password?" he/she will be at their Account page, where he/she can set a new password.

o Go to your group's home page
o Click the Join or Request to Join button.

This leaves the member with two accounts, each a member of your group, at two different email addresses. You can remove the unwanted membership, or the member can unsubscribe that address from your group.

If the member never wants to use the unwanted email address at Groups.io he/she can log back in to that address one last time, go to the account page, and click the red Delete My Account button.

Re: Integration ?

Dain,

Our California South Coast On30 Module club group on Facebook is a
public group.
Sorry for the misinformation. I wasn't paying attention to the distinction between a page and a group at Facebook.

It seems from Guido's earlier message he got the word from the horse's mouth, and it is "no" for Facebook groups. I don't know if that can or will be changed, but that would be a suggestion to take up in the beta group.

You are likely correct that Groups.io would need some kind of authentication (account) with Facebook in order to integrate with groups of any type.

I have a member in that position, but I don't see any "resend confirmation
email" option. Where do I find it, please?

When someone requests membership in a group, and is not yet in any other
groups.io groups (i.e., they are not yet a member of groups.io), groups.io sends
an email asking them to "confirm" that they requested membership. This is to
prevent someone from signing up someone else (like, if I ordered 10 pizzas sent
to your house:). The person needs to click on the "confirm membership" link
within the email to confirm that they, indeed, requested the membership.
Sometimes they don't, or the email goes into spam, or who knows what. If you
continue to see the "NC," you can click on the option to "resend confirmation
email" and hope they get the resent email. If it still continues, you can try to
contact the person outside the system (via your own email) in case groups.io
emails are going into the person's spam folder, and ask them to locate the
confirmation email and click on on the link. If they STILL can't find it (and
this has happened a number of times in my own group), and you know you want to
admit the person to your group, you can email Mark and ask him to let them in.

Until the person is confirmed, even though they look like a member of your group
they will not be able to post messages to the group or access any group content.
They're essentially on hold. -- J

Re: Integration ?

Facebook groups are the most limited Facebook entity. If you try to load a Facebook group page without logging in, you end up at a login screen. Groups have three privacy settings -- public, closed and secret,? but "Public" it seems is not open to the public; only people with Facebook accounts can access our group page. Unless there is a sub page I'm missing with settings, groups.io would need a account and maybe be a member to integrate.

No, it will go to the group AND sender.? A situation where I could see this being useful would be if I got the digest, but wanted to see replies to my posts right away.? I don't think I'd ever set it for my groups though.? I think Mark just wanted to cover all the bases when he added that option.
