Who "owns" a group - discussion

I'm posting this incident to start a discussion here, not to solve a problem....

A friend (yes, a friend, not me) decided to move his group form Y! to here.? ? But he came to groups to find a group with the same name already here.??
Turns out one of the group members didn't like his management style, so he started a competing (duplicate) group here on groups.? ?(Y! manager kept the group strictly on topic, and this person wanted the group to be able to have off-topic conversations).
For this incident, my friend is working with support/mark to address the issue, and has started his own somewhat renamed group here on groups.io.

The question for GMF:

Has anyone else seen this with their groups, or with groups they are a part of???

Re: Guidelines link

If you don't mind the public seeing them, you could set the Group Guidelines and/or Wiki so that they're visible without being logged in.? If you do want folks to be logged in to see them, then you should suggest on beta that the login follow through to the Group Guidelines page like Wiki does.

Re: Can transferring files be done separately? #files

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

You can transfer any or all, but you will have one possible problem by moving anything yourself. Anything you download off your site, and then upload to your new site, will change the ownership of those files to you. If that doesn¡¯t matter, then go for it.

Can you transfer the group without files and then later on transfer the files in? We are going through files to see what to get rid of and better organize them but wanted to know if we could transfer without the files, first. Otherwise we could transfer everything and then organize what¡¯s transferred. Tammi

2 questions-use of 10g storage & number of subscribers

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Two questions regarding my [email protected] :

  1. I have the group set up on ¡®premium¡¯ subscription which allows me 10g storage.? I have looked but can NOT find where on the site I can see HOW MUCH of the 10g I¡¯m currently using.? Can you direct me to where I can periodically check that usage?
  2. I¡¯ve notice that on the splash page for [email protected] the ¡®group¡¯ number is not changing, even though I have people unsubscribing and new people being added.? It ALWAYS stays at the initial 1921 number.? The ¡®topics and last post info¡¯ DO change.

?

Thanks,

Harlan

Re: HELP! Hyphen in group name/URL not recognized

Dr. Denver Fox

OK, I changed the email address to [email protected] which seems to have fixed the problem.? I guess I will go with that, although I would prefer PAD-CO.? Thanks

Re: Speaking of those group addresses.....

Yes, it is possible, although it is a configuration option for each individual owner/moderator. If they have jointly decided that they don't want to be contacted, you cannot make them accept your inquiry.?

Guidelines link

I've noticed that the link (/g/GROUPNAME/guidelines) to my group's Guidelines (which is set to Private) brings us to the / homepage if a member is not logged in, hence the member needs to log in and then enter that Guidelines link, or click on the group's Guidelines tab before going to the Guidelines page.
However, the link to one of my group's wiki page (also Private) brings us to the "Log In" page /login?r=%2Fg%2FGROUPNAME%2Fwiki%2FWIKIPAGETITLE which brings us to the correct wiki page once the member has logged in. Is it reasonable to request the same behavior for the Guidelines link i.e. to go to the "Log In" page, then straight to Guidelines page once the member has logged in?

FYI, in the links above, I've replaced my group name and the wiki page title with GROUPNAME, and WIKIPAGETITLE.

Thanks.
Lily

OK - so, then, for all my future users that I will be importing, I need to change the name to PADCO as they will likely be using a variety of clients.? How would I change the name?? BTW, I don't have this hyphen problem on my Yahoo accounts.? Thanks so much!

Duane, thanks, I?ll try that

Re: Was my invitation accepted?

The online instructions at /yahootransfer?says that the transfer agent will do the transfer "within one business day." If this was changed to something more accurate it might help with the unrealistic expectations.

Re: Symbol for priorizing titles in files

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

?

Well, I tried out these symbols (*, ^, #), and they definitely don?t work in front of letters. So I?ll have to take numbers which is quite uncomfortable since I don?t want to number my hundreds of files.

Too bad¡but thanks

Victoria

Unfortunately, in your case, it looks like Mark did too good of a job on the sort.? I did some quick testing this morning and found that standard symbols (*, ^, #) are always first, numbers second, and letters (ignoring case) after.? I didn't find any invisible characters that stay invisible, such as Alt+0141.

Re: HELP! Hyphen in group name/URL not recognized

From your example, it looks like the Group Title and Group Email Address are set correctly in those boxes.? I believe what you are seeing in the Welcome email is a function of the client program you're using for email.? Mine all work as they should in Thunderbird.

Dr. Denver Fox

I am sorry - neophyte to this server.? I see a lot of boxes to check on the Settings and Settings Sub, but nothing to do with URLs??? Could you be more specific?? What particular boxes should I check and where on the settings page?? Thanks so much.

Re: HELP! Hyphen in group name/URL not recognized

Works fine on one of my groups.? On the Settings page, check in the 1st and 2nd boxes.? If you have those both set to PAD-CO, it should work properly.

BTW, all of us here on GMF are site users, like you, and have no capability for changing things.? Suggestions should be made on the beta group.? Bugs should be reported to [email protected].

HELP! Hyphen in group name/URL not recognized

Edited

HELP! Hyphen in group name/URL not recognized

?
I just enrolled with the group name of PAD-CO, and find that the welcome email that is coming from Groups.IO has the URL as CO.io, not PAD-CO.IO, not recognizing anything before the hyphen and making the name useless.
?
So, I need to change the name to PADCO, or you need to change the program to recognize hyphens as a part of the URL.
?
Help!! ?Before I enroll anyone but myself under two different addresses. ?So far, I have only enrolled 2 emails, both mine, as I try to find the glitches. ?I seem to have found a major glitch.

Re: calender

Yes it can be done easily, but it's not really intuitive (until you've used it a few times. ;>)? Set Repeats to Weekly, then set Repeat Every to 2.? You can also specify that it occur on a day of the week.? Once you've made your selections, there will be a Repeat Summary at the bottom of the Repeats box where you can make sure it will do what you want.

Re: Speaking of those group addresses.....

Can someone who is NOT a group member contact the owner/moderator through those home page addresses?? When in YG I tried to contact a few group owners to ask questions about the group before I thought about joining but the messages always came back as undeliverable.? I would like that feature if at all possible.
