Sigh. I'm getting pushback from someone on my board due to her concerns about GIO being "secure enough." (Never mind the details.)

Can someone give me language that a somewhat tech-savvy layperson can grasp to allay their fears?

What sort of "tech-savvy" language do you expect will satisfy someone who has no specific reason to suspect Gio is insecure... especially when we've been told to "never mind the details?" Absolutely nothing has been provided that anyone can respond to.

Re: member security concerns

Toby, that is exactly the problem. I need to allay the fears of someone who isn't quite sure what her fears are based on.

Re: Concerned about FALSE Pending member/Spammer?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Oh so you did ask them.
Then that is very strange that that member got?their name.
?
Did you try sending that?person an email asking them how they knew the person who recommended them because that person doesn't recall knowing them. ?
?
I also send a questionnaire prior to them joining but there are ways to?fudge those. So when I am iffy about a member who joins any of my groups, I first have them on moderation so I can see what they are sharing.?I have had members in the past join groups just to advertise their groups. So?by?being on moderation I will know that.
?
Now here is another?reason?there should be a way to close off the archives to members. I already suggested it in Support for IO. But if more members ask for it maybe it will be escalated. It is on the back burner now.
?
If the members couldn't see what is being shared by reading the archives you wouldn't have to worry about any bad members. Just put them on no mail and then they can't see what is going on. Then you wouldn't have to worry about them bothering you by trying to rejoin and rejoin. ?But being that the archives?cannot be shut down, that won't work in this case. ?

Thank you Ilene for your reply.

The person whose name was given did not know her at all..? She checked all memberships in the groups She belongs to and came up with no connection.? I'm sorry that I slipped mentioning that in my request.

We tried everything we could to confirm who She was, but found nothing to support this was a legit person with a honest request.? Then the continued requests along with hearing that She's requesting membership in many groups is another issue that has our RED ALERTS going off.

Re: member security concerns

Without knowing what "secure enough" means in this person's head, it's pretty hard to say anything.??
What are the threats and attack vectors that are of concern?
Physical access to the servers?? How are the admin usernames/passwords secured and backed up?? the list goes on and on.......
A good place to start is here -> /static/about
The Data Processing Agreement might allay their concerns.

Re: How Do I upload a CSV File of Our Member Email Addresses?

Thanks Duane! When you say "one month," do you mean there is the flexibility to move in and out of Premium to the free version at any time? Since we add members throughout the year, it appears that we would have to sign up for Premium permanently since we don't have the luxury of volunteers chasing down new members, inviting them to join, then following up with them if they don't do so within a reasonable period. Since there is no paid staff in our organization, we try to find the most economical, automated, least onerous to volunteers, administrative solutions.?

You can use a CSV file to add everyone at once.? When there are more than 20, you may see a short delay, but that normally only lasts a couple of hours (it's a spammer prevention tool Mark uses.)

What I would have done is contacted the person?they said recommended her/him to the group and?got feed back from them. It may be that you deleted a member who?to you may seem flaky, but may have an illness that makes them come across that way like a stroke, but crafting is good therapy for them. You can still ask the member who that person said?recommended them to find out about them. Ilene

My small group of crafters keeps getting requests for this same "person" to join our group.
When a person asks to join there are some basic questions I ask to narrow down if my group is
right for them, if they are right for my group of hand selected crafters.

I had a "person" request to join two days ago, her replies to my questions were flaky, but in the
end when asked who recommenced my group I was given a name of a long standing member
and approved this "persons" request to join.

Within a short time it was obvious to us this "person" didn't belong there, so I deleted her. ?

Reports came back to me that She is trying to gain access to not just my group, but many.
Crafters are very social.? Their memberships cross over the internet into several groups.
Most crafters belong to at least 2 groups so that they can share ideas and learn from one another.
We're also very much into social media using most platforms to show off our art.

Several of us starting "looking" for this "person" in social media to try to figure out what the heck was going on.
Meanwhile in my group alone this "person" has returned, trying to gain access.? I've banned her.

But concerns still linger about if this is a spammer or worse.
Is there any way for groups.io or it's owner to check into this?
Most of these crafting groups are all women.? And young adults.

Thank you for listening and any advice that can be shared.

Peter,

This sounds like it might be a browser caching issue. Try one or more of the following: page refresh, logout and back in, restart the browser.

Re: New Group Not Being Created From Yahoo Groups

Ken -
i have successfully added 6 other groups to groups.io. This will be my 15th attempt to get this group to work - 15th. Are you saying that I should just give up and use google groups instead?

i started yet again today, to be careful, I created another brand new group
- I verified that I am the owner
- I clicked on easy group transfer
- I clicked on Set Up New Transfer
- I entered the existing YanooGroups groups name
- I selected the new groups.io group to transfer to
- I clicked on Start New Transfer Process
- in YahooGroups, i invited a new member ¡°[email protected]¡±
And I verifyed that the invitation went through from yahooGroups
-I ?waited for a response from groups.io
this is where I have gotten stuck the 15 times, I never get the response from Groups.io 15 times!!! I have wasted an amazing amount of time to have someone essentially tell me that I must have forgotten something.

feel free to use the instructions I just wrote for you, they are clear cut and concise and walk you through the applicable steps, as this illustrates, I know what I am doing. i am desperately in need of help! To be told ¡°oh well, Yahoo does weird things¡±?does not help, it just pisses me off and makes me question why I stuck my neck out to convince this group to use groups.io when they wanted to use GoogleGroups. This is the 21st email in this thread. I have answered your questions, I have tried over and over and over, yet I am in the same position. What can you do to actually help me to finish what, for all my other groups, has been a piece of cake?

You won't get to the invitation need until you've started the transfer process.? You're missing something somewhere.? Are you using the /yahootransfer page or the /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups page for instructions?? They amount to the same thing, but the second has more detail for each step, in sequence.

I think it may be Yahoo but just for our group since you had no issue creating the member. Can Mark do something to bypass the need for the transfer member?

Help! This has been about 6 weeks and I convinced the group that this would be a quick and easy transfer so I have lost all credibility!

I am pretty sure that you can remove and then re add a member to YahooGroups..

How Do I upload a CSV File of Our Member Email Addresses?

Greetings!
I just joined groups.io so that my membership can receive notifications of meetings and events and share upcoming exhibition information with each other. We have been using Gmail but now with mailing limitations, group emails are being rejected. We do not have any Yahoo Groups or Google Groups. The reason we decided not to go with Google Groups was that there didn't seem to be a financially economical way to transfer group member email addresses from our existing Gmail account nor do a CSV import into Google Groups. Is there a way to populate email addresses in groups.io without having to invite people (and following up with them multiple times) or typing emails in one at a time? We have 150+ members and we are an all-volunteer organization. Half of our members are older and barely able to figure out emails.?

Re: getting a undeliverable report

Thank you Shal

That makes sense to me.

Ok. I will do just that.

I am having to go in to the site and manually accept them

Yes I am doing it via e mail.

Thank you so much for your time.

Sugar,

When a member joins I get a notice and I approve them

Then I get a undelieverable report as a server error

I presume you're trying to approve them by email.

The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:

?

????? 'Groups.io' on 11/27/2018 1:36 PM

??????????? Server error: '553 5.1.3 Syntax error in recipient address'

?

The problem is that your reply is being sent to "" - which is not a valid address. There should have been (a lot) more to the return address. It should have looked something like:

[email protected]

Possibly the hyphens in your group name, or the very long resulting email address confused your email interface and the Reply function didn't copy the address correctly.

Next time you try to approve one by email, before you click send make note of the address your reply is being sent TO. If it doesn't look like the above report back here what's being put there. Also tell us what email interface you're using.

Shal
