If you're the owner, the only difference will be that you get the blue Owner badge and the Admin menu. A recently created free group doesn't have Files or Calendar etc. so you won't see a menu with

To clarify, that's all you'll get on a free group created recently. A legacy free group will have more features and so more options on the left side menu. Andy
