Shal: I don't think we CAN say which of btinternet and synchronoss is responsible, since we do not know whether the buggy host reports the "for .." address before or after it corrupts this address.

There is at least a potential issue with changing to a dot in I seem to remember that gmail ignores dots in the left side of email addresses (so group.owner and groupowner are regarded as the same) -
