Could there be some confusion here between Yahoo's "title page photo" and "home page photo"? Yahoo has both. I think Groups.io just has the equivalent of Yahoo's title page photo. I guess you could call that a cover photo.

There may be some confusion over terminology.

All Groups.io groups come with a default black-and-white cover photo of some elephants on the open plain. You see that on Beta, for example. So I'm confused over what you mean by groups that had no photos.

Here in GMF I replaced it with a photo I took of some elephants. You can upload your own in the "Cover Photo" tab of the settings page.

Like the "cover image" on Yahoo groups, it is at the top and banner-shaped. Unlike Yahoo groups it doesn't head every page of your group, only the home page. Also unlike Yahoo Groups, it doesn't get all weird if your photo isn't banner-shaped.

Here's one with both a cover photo, and one embedded in the group Description text.

Yes you can add a photo which is one reason I went with IO as most of the others you could not use a photo that I could see!

Re: Moving Files and Photos

There's not an easy way to move the Files and Photos. A serious consideration is that you have 1 GB on a free group or 10 GB on a paid group for storage of those things. It doesn't take long to use that if there are hi-res photos.

Hopefully Mark will have a true database function before too long. It's been on the todo list for nearly a year. The Wiki is so-so for doing db's, but is usable for now. If all members will be able to edit it, it can become a mess quickly though.

Duane

Moving Files and Photos

Hello,
I am in the process of setting up to move my sewing machine group from Yahoo to IO. I see that when I am ready to make the make the switch IO will move my members and messages. Now is there an easy way to move to all the files from and photos from Yahoo to IO? I am still trying to get handle on how to do a database in IO using WIKI as well. So any pointer or help there will be greatly appreciated also.

Thanks,

Dean

Re: group question

Marvin,

Is it possible to take over the group or transfer ownership without the
owners notice or permission?
No.

Think about it: no group would survive very long if one could - a spammer would steal it straight away, even if there were no malcontents in the group.

group question

Marvin Hunkin

Hi. Was just wondering. What happens if a member, say hypothetical member a has a beef with the admins, or owners, or the owners or the admins have a beef, and ban him. The member a tries to communicate to the owner / admin / moderator. Is it possible to take over the group or transfer ownership without the owner’s notice or permission?

Any ideas.

Marvin.

how do you "schedule files" here?

oliviaj_catlady

I've seen the "member notices" in settings, which allow you to send out a welcome message, a message on pending subscription, a message on leaving, and a message on banned. But is there something here allowing automatic monthly mailing of a larger file (with group guidelines, etc.), and/or for sending out larger files on joining the group (besides the welcome message)? If this feature is missing from groups.io, I'll suggest it in the beta group. But I have the feeling I just haven't found how to "schedule a file" yet. Thanks.

The groups home page, showing the email commands, the join button, and other information about the group is available to non-members. The group's home page is probably the most useful link to provide when recommending the group - just as I've done.

They can be found in Google and other web searches. But it is true that is not yet as well known as Yahoo Groups, and there are far fewer groups here as yet. You can help your group's search ranking along by posting links to your group in many public places on the web (where appropriate, I'm not suggesting comment-spamming or other abusive techniques).

Olivia,

Either with the email +subscribe command (listed on the group's home page), or by clicking the "Join This Group" button on the group's home page.

Related to this is that I haven't seen groups.io groups come up in
google searches, yet yahoo groups are very findable by their subject
matter.

As you've already discovered, that setting is available in the drop-list. I realize now that my description implied otherwise (that both must be public or neither).

Sorry for the confusion.

Re: how to limit visibility of archives?

Olivia,

1. listed in directory, publicly viewable archives
2. listed in directory, private archives
3. not listed in directory, private archives.

Isn't #2 exactly what I want - listed in directory, but private archives?
Yes it is. I didn't mean to imply that setting isn't available. Yet now reading what I wrote I see I needed to be clearer.

It seems that "private archives" is not the same as "private group" in
the yahoo sense. Here it just means that the old posts are not viewable
by non-members. Is that correct?
Correct.
