I have requested twice for the Groups.io to join my Yahoo Group to transfer it to Groups.io - and NOTHING.? When and what is supposed to happen?

Generally speaking it's not a problem with the GIO web interface, only what people do with their email. Most email clients -- by default -- include a copy of the entire message every time you hit "reply." At that point it is up to the person using it to winnow the wheat from the chaff.?

Email clients also differ in the way quoted text is identified. And some people are terribly offended by top-quoting (as I've done above), others by bottom-quoting. Don't get me started on that. :-)

Making everyone happy by software is not an achievable goal. That being the case, I have to agree with Duane:? there is really no alternative to subscriber education, with moderation as required as an additional tool to get your point across.

Good luck,
Bruce

Re: Is there some setting to disable the QUOTE FUNCTION when making a reply? . . . #suggestion

The original is NOT automatically quoted when replying online.? That requires that they click the button to include the quote.? It's really only a problem for those that only use email.? I've made 'trimming' one of the rules in my Group Guidelines that are sent monthly, as well as to new members.? We suggest two lines or only as much as is needed to focus the reply.? I can easily put them on moderation and point them to the guidelines if they don't trim.? Usually doesn't take them long to figure it out when that happens.? It sometimes recurs when they change devices though, so back on moderation.? A member of my groups wrote up a Wiki page to explain what it means and how to do it as well.

Is there some setting to disable the QUOTE FUNCTION when making a reply? . . . #suggestion

I've been busy this week tweaking the settings on our new IO Groups site (CRL) in preparation for the upcoming transfer from Y!Groups.

We' have always had problems with our members piggybacking the previous message onto a reply and even though we ask very nicely that they not do that they either don't understand how or are too lazy to bother to delete the text of the previous message.

So... Is there a setting on Groups.io which disables the quote function/icon when a member makes a reply to another member's topic/post?

Having an option like that would save our moderators a lot of time having to remove piggybacking and would also minimize the moderators' alienating of so many of our members when we reject one of their messages and ask that they to remove the piggybacking and then re-submit it.

Any suggestions or workarounds would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Of course...but still not surprising. We have all had to deal with it.

Good luck, and please report back here on what options are available so we can provide better advice next time.

The old Y!Group was moderated throughout, and has been closed to new messages since the transfer to Groups.io completed. The results of the transfer appeared all at once, so there was no way to know when it started to read the Y!G message archive. And it wouldn't have been reasonable (to subscribers) to lock out all new messages for the last two or three weeks, from the moment when [email protected] was made a Moderator. Unavoidable the orphaned messages may be, but not desirable.

I'll ask support for help transferring those last few messages, as Matt has.

Re: groups [member management vs overthrow]

As far as a takeover, I very seriously doubt that would be allowed as long as the owner replies to an inquiry from GIO management.? I don't believe there's a set procedure for a missing owner yet.? Anyone could take over a group if they managed to sign in as the group owner though.? Rather than go through all that, it would be much easier to start a new group for the same subject.? Happens more often than some people realize.

For DOS or similar, I feel like Mark has a good handle on things like that.

I have both options in the settings menu set to 1024 x 1024 and the photos are still arriving full size.
Any other ideas?

Re: Invitations to subgroups

Bruce, Frances,

The way I understand it, even Basic (unpaid) groups can Direct Add people to a subgroup, but that person has to be a member of the main group first, with all the spam control features associated with the main group Invite process.

This is correct. See also GMF #8721.

Only Premium+ groups can Direct Add members to the main group.

groups [member management vs overthrow]

Marvin Hunkin

Hi. Got a hyperthetical. Let¡¯s say mike, has a beef with a owner of a group. And then has tried to contactthe ?and the admin. But not talking to him. Is there a way for let¡¯s say mike or larry or joe to be able to take over the current group from the current owner, and let¡¯s call him bill. So, is there a way, or this is not built into groups.io. just curious.

And also are there redundancies against say ?hackers who would want to bring trouble to groups.io, or even a denial of service attack. Just curious, as interested in network security.

Thanks.malicious owner

Re: Invitations to subgroups

The FAQ says:
Subgroups
Groups.io supports subgroups. A subgroup is a group within another group. When viewing your group on the website, you can create a subgroup by clicking the 'Subgroup' tab on the left side. The email address of a subgroup is of the form [email protected].
?
Subgroups have all the functionality of normal groups, with the exceptions that to be a member of a subgroup, you must be a member of the parent group, and you cannot invite people to join subgroups.
?
Once a person is a member of the parent group, they can subscribe directly to the subgroup if it's permitted, they can be added directly to the subgroup, or they can ask to join the subgroup if it is restricted.

So, does this mean that if you have a Premium or Enterprise group (i.e. not free), you can direct add members to a subgroup. I wish that the FAQ was clearer about what was available in basic and what was available with paid groups.

And it might be helpful if people used a hashtag to say whether their group is basic, premium or enterprise. The advice may be different.

Unfortunately, no. The latest info on this can be found at?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/8009

In an active group some orphaned messages is unavoidable (unless you put both groups on moderation). You could try a second transfer asking for just the message archive to come over again, but if people have subsequently made any posts to your GIO group, the affected message numbers will remain out of sequence. That's your best-case scenario.
