Re: Unusable e-mail address for reply
Paul:
Yes I am using my rocketmail address account. It is really a Yahoo account because Yahoo bought rocketmail many years ago. They also gave me the r.rm as a username for whatever. I never use it. But it seems like Groups.io should send a reply to ALL when REPLY TO GROUP is enabled. Suppose the recipient gets two copies. Payback for causing me a bunch of trouble. One "offender" has deleted himself and I Invited him after that, using a different e-mail address. Thanks, Richard |
Re: Automatic Deletion of Members If Message Marked As Spam

For every problem, there are literally dozens of simple and easy to understand solutions that are usually wrong.? In the case of setting someone to "nomail" - while it is, to most users, a simple and straightforward option, here's something that may have been overlooked:? SOMETIMES the reason people's email bounces is that they died, or they went into hospital for an extended stay, or something else happened (i.e., they changed email providers) to them or maybe their inboxes filled up and won't take any more mail.? You set them to "nomail" and YOU DON'T KNOW for sure WHY they're on "nomail" - and your subscriber file then becomes littered with invalid email addresses and you lose track of the people in your group.? Also, some people simply change email service providers because THEY get "too much spam" (and forget to tell all the lists and friends they have about the change).? So, they remember you as a great group, and they join with the new email address.? Then you have TWO subscriptions for one person - one of which is no longer valid, and the other which may stay valid for a while.? Why do I say "for a while?"? Because after doing this stuff for probably 30+ years, I can tell you that the reason people get spam is overwhelmingly a product of their "browsing habits."? If all they do is change the email address and not change browsing habits, it won't be long before that new email address starts giving them more "spam" just like the old one and they will change email address yet again.
While initially I thought the "nomail" option was a nice compromise, I think forcing the user to RTFM (Read The F'ing Manual) and keep his/her own house in order is actually the better solution, even if it means that some of your subscribers will leave in frustration.? If they do, they'll leave other places in frustration as well because they simply do not want to be bothered learning how to interact with email.? And, instant messaging and other social media options have their own problems as well. Bill Hickey Boulder, CO |

I've left the sentence as I wrote it for two reasons; firstly I cannot see any meaningful distinction between my original and your amendment, and secondly (and more importantly in my view) I had already submitted it as a formal suggestion on the beta group and I didn't want to risk annoying Mark by further tinkering for which I could see no obvious reason. He might already be a little peeved at being asked to do another change so soon after the previous rewording. In other news, we had a "btinternet" user unsubscribed yesterday so the inclusion of that provider in the "risk list" would seem to have been appropriate. Chris |
Re: How do I change footer?
The intent of the long message footer is to provide basic subscription preferences (and group unsub functionality) to those who might never visit your group via the web.
If you have a custom message footer for your group, remove it. But it sounds like you've already done that. In Message Policies, you can set a reply option and then click the box to "remove other reply options." This will make the footer somewhat shorter (at the cost of taking away some of your subscriber's reply options, of course). Other than that, I'm afraid there's not a whole lot that you can do.? Hope this helps, Bruce |
Re: RSVP events
#calendar
Southenders Admin
Thanks, Bruce, I've tried that. Unfortunately, I have 30 different moderators (Group Leaders), and they don't always follow the rules. I've asked for this in the Beta group as well. I need something more prominent as part of the standard RSVP package.
I feel this feature of the premium site can be so much more than it is. -- Norm |
File Upload privileges
I have the privileges for Files set to Subscriber view, moderator upload, but there is a File Upload button available to subscribers. Is there something else that has to be done to prevent this button from appearing. The Photos setting is the same and no upload button appears for the photos.

Re: RSVP events
#calendar
From trying this out in the test group, it seems to me that you could mention this in the Description field...just get into the habit of appending a sentence saying:? "Please click the 'Are You Going' link above to RSVP."
Unfortunately, if you permit subscribers to create calendar entries, this option becomes more problematical. It's also not particularly good for subscribers who might be getting plain-text message delivery, but I see no way around that. ? Hope this helps, Bruce |
How do I change the default list of messages to the most recent rather than the oldest messages.
Hello all,
Our group is new to Groups.io and I was wondering how to set my own messages to show the most recent messages first rather than the oldest. I click on Date at the top and that changes the order and keeps it that way when I come back to our group.? That's fine but when I click on Home, then click on the messages for April (for example), it always shows the oldest first and I have to click again on Date.? When I go back in and repeat the Home, messages for April again, it shows the oldest messages first again. I am interested in looking at recent messages usually and not the old ones I have already looked at. Bob Yutzy moderator by default Shasta Birders at Groups.io |
How do I change footer?
When I receive mails from a group I manage, the footer is extremely large. How can I change this to be shorter? I've configured the "Message Footer" from the settings tab, but it's only shown in the middle of that huge footer.
Thanks I've copied the complete footer below: [mod note: nothing was pasted here - not that we need it anyway] |
Re: Unusable e-mail address for reply
Hi Richard, Conversion is easy. For your example it would be username@....
Convert the = to @ and drop the @groups.io. Just another note for
members with Yahoo email addresses. When I respond to group posts from
my Yahoo email address the reponse goes to the member, not to the group.
I have to reply to use reply "All" and then delete the member's email. This is not a problem when replying from my gmail account. Paul, Ohio, USA

Re: emails not arriving
Win,
Yes indeed. ?
An offlist question from a Y!GMF member reminds me of another possibility. Your email service could be encountering a failure it interprets as "temporary" - so it hasn't reported the failure yet, pending some retries. ?
I guess I can't absolutely rule out a problem with the inbound handling at Groups.io. That in fact was what the Y!GMF member was asking about - a message eventually got reported back (Delivery Failure) to her Gmail inbox by one Yahoo server that couldn't find another Yahoo server. I just really really don't expect that kind of a problem here; so borrowing Occam's razor I point the finger at your email service. ?
Ok, yeah. That's pretty much all on their hands! Shal? -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
