Re: What's going on here?

Hmm... The square box implies to me that your email interface recognized
that it was a Unicode character, but didn't have that character
available in the font used for displaying the message. Possibly you
could see it if you can switch display fonts?
I wondered about that at the time and tried a couple of alternatives without
success. I just tried searching several fonts in Windows Character Map (using
the Unicode option of course) but couldn't find one that included that
character. Having typed that, it occurred to me that I could look at the source
of the Wikipedia page, where I found they specify Lucida Sans Unicode, which
does include it. Using that for my email does show it. Problem solved! I
normally read email using plain Arial, which does not include it. This message
has now been typed with a mixture, so I wonder how it will come through to you
(my guess is it will make no difference, sending in plain text).

In the Miscellaneous Symbols block, ♯ at your service.
Thanks. Never needed it on a web site yet, but who knows what the future may
hold?

Tracking Pending Member and Welcome Messages

Is there any way to see if a Pending New Member message or a Welcome message has actually been sent to members asking to join a group?? My group is supposed to send a prospective member a message asking them to confirm their intent to join the group but I don;t see a way to know if they actually do get sent.

TIA

Re: Questions on Transfer Form

Stan,

1. It asks for the name of the group. I have subgroups. Assume the main group is called Wine and has subgroups. It would be listed in the drop down list when click on the field to enter the group name. I assume Support/Transfer will know Wine is the main group and that its email address is [email protected] and not [email protected]. Correct?

The latter, [email protected], would be a synonym for the primary Wine group.

That drop-list is a lot more poorly formatted than I remember. I thought the subgroups were indented or otherwise clearly identified as subgroups of the preceding primary group name. That could use some improvement.
?
2. I created subgroups but there is nothing from Yahoo that needs to be transferred to the subgroups. They are listed in the drop down list when I click on the field to enter the group name. I assume I just ignore the subgroups and just enter the main group, like I would do above. Is that correct?

Correct.
?
3. I see there is now an option to not have the welcome message automatically sent to the members when the transfer is complete. If I understand this correctly, if uncheck this option, it will not send the automated message that gives a member the option to immediately unsubscribe

Correct.
?
and it will not send the welcome message that I created.

That will still be sent, if Active. It used to be that it must also have been customized, but I don't think that matters now that there is an option to have no Welcome notice active.
?
4. The first sentence of step 4 says: "Come back here, select your transfer, and tell us that you are ready for the transfer to happen."

On the transfer form there's an "In Process" drop-list over to the right of the green Start New Transfer button. Use the droplist to select the group in question. That will bring up an additional form for you to give the "Go" when you are ready.

If I understand the new procedure, all I do is

Step 0 -
?
create the group (which has been done),

Step 1 - Click the Start Group Transfer Process button (this associates the Yahoo Group name with the target Groups.io group name, and with your email address (logged in account) for notification at completion.

Step 2 - Invited the [email protected] address to your Yahoo Group.

Step 3 -
?
make [email protected] a moderator with all moderator privileges unchecked (which I will do),

Step 4 -
?
and then just submit the new form.

You've already submitted the start transfer form (step 1), now you're using the In Progress form.
?
I no longer send an email message to Support or [email protected] that the Yahoo group is ready to be transferred.

Correct.

Shal

What Deb wants can't be done. Locking only prevents further messages from being posted to the topic, as Duane has already explained; it doesn't stop people from viewing messages already posted. And locking a topic has nothing to do with hashtags. You can use a hashtag to auto-lock topics but that's all.

Numbering Messages on Transfer

Transferred messages stay in order by date but appear to be renumbered. But some numbers are missing. They will skip from , and seemingly chronological but some numbers are missing.

#6383, #6371, #6401 are chronological messages. #6383 is more recent than #6401

#634, #633, #635, #637, #636 are all from 4/29/06 and appear in that order on the list of messages.

This isn¡¯t a problem for us but I am preparing to transfer a number of lists for one organization and need to be able to explain the logic of this.

Re: Like a message - purpose?

If you look at an earlier post in this thread, you can see how it will appear; /g/GroupManagersForum/message/1604? If you liked it, it would say "You and 2 others liked this"? the '2 others' would be a link you could click on to see who they were.

Re: How Owner's Messages work

Unfortunately, there's currently no record kept on the group, though it's on the TODO list.? The best you can do for now, is select Bcc: Me or Bcc: All Moderators, or both.? If you select All Moderators, I think it only sends it to the others, but I'm not sure about that, so you may want to select both to make sure you get a copy.? You still can't be sure they got them, but you'll know it was sent.

You also won't see any replies unless you've chosen to receive Owner Emails in your subscription, as they'll be 'hidden' under Owner mails in that member's page.

In this group¡¯s Wiki, go down to Best Practices For Management and look for Member ?Notices.

That might be what you¡¯re looking for.

I came searching today. I¡¯m curious what happens if I ¡°like¡± a message? Does the person know? Do I see I¡¯m not the only one? Who else agreed with the idea in the post??

I know now I replied to an old post but I still would like to know the answers.

Questions on Transfer Form

I am ready to transfer my other group. The transfer form raises some questions. The first two are no doubt evident to many in this group, but I want to make sure.
1. It asks for the name of the groups.io group. I have subgroups. Assume the main group is called Wine and has subgroups. It would be listed in the drop down list when click on the field to enter the group name. I assume Support/Transfer will know Wine is the main group and that its email address is [email protected] and not [email protected]. Correct?
2. I created subgroups but there is nothing from Yahoo that needs to be transferred to the subgroups. They are listed in the drop down list when I click on the field to enter the group name. I assume I just ignore the subgroups and just enter the main group, like I would do above. Is that correct?
3. I see there is now an option to not have the welcome message automatically sent to the members when the transfer is complete. If I understand this correctly, if uncheck this option, it will not send the automated message that gives a member the option to immediately unsubscribe and it will not send the welcome message that I created. Is this correct? If so, this is a great development for two reasons: a) now members will not receive a message that allows them to immediately unsubscribe, and b) I can better control when the members know the transfer had taken place so that I can better coordinate the shutting down (not allowing members to post) of Yahoo and members knowing to now post in the IO group.
4. The first sentence of step 4 says: "Come back here, select your transfer, and tell us that you are ready for the transfer to happen." I am confused by this. Is this a holdover from the previous method to start the transfer by sending a message to [email protected] that is no longer needed because of the new form? If I understand the new procedure, all I do is create the group (which has been done), make [email protected] a moderator with all moderator privileges unchecked (which I will do), and then just submit the new form. I no longer send an email message to Support or [email protected] that the Yahoo group is ready to be transferred. Correct?

How Owner's Messages work

In my group we ask prospective members a short introduction in order to be approved.
I have sent a message to a Pending Member through her Member's Page asking her to introduce herself, but the message sent does not show anywhere.
Neither in the Pending Member's page nor in my personal Activity History.
A couple of moderators had the same experience with other PM as well.

We are wondering if messages sent via web to Pending Members actually reach them. We have not clear how Owner's Messages work and what is meant to be stored under the tab Owner's Messages.

Thank you for your help.
Marina

Re: locking messages #lock

Deb wanted: ?"I'd like to block viewing of some messages without actually deleting them. The example is blocking a discussion from being read after the fact except by the subgroup moderator."

I saw that there is a duration hashtag. I don't know if it works the way I thought it should - still testing with Deb's help.
As I mentioned, Help says: Automatic time-out: If a hashtag¡¯s Topic Duration is set, topics tagged with it will be deleted (or, if specified, locked) after that period of time. This can be a useful feature when a topic will be obsolete after a certain amount of time, for example messages about items for sale.

Anyone know how this works? Would it help Deb?

Frances

Re: locking messages #lock

J_Catlady

The question has absolutely nothing to do with hashtags (although hashtags can be set to lock a topic).

Topics (not individual messages) can be locked by clicking on the dropdown arrow at the bottom of the topic in the topics list, and clicking on "Lock topic"; or by clicking on any individual message within the topic, clicking "More," and clicking on "Lock topic."

Newbie

Hi, I have just started a Group, but cannot find anywhere to put a message to those requesting to join, or, to make a welcome message to those that have been approved.

Perhaps someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks, Tim

Hi

Just checked -?
Go to Hashtags. Then click on Edit on the hashtag you wish to change. You get some options, including Topic Duration.

here¡¯s a screenshot:

The Help says: Locked: If a hashtag is set to Locked, topics tagged with it will be locked upon creation.
?
However in the Help, I see this that is more what you are looking for, I think:
Automatic time-out: If a hashtag¡¯s Topic Duration is set, topics tagged with it will be deleted (or, if specified, locked) after that period of time. This can be a useful feature when a topic will be obsolete after a certain amount of time, for example messages about items for sale.

BTW, there is also "moderate topic" which means that an unmoderated group can have a topic that is not a free-for-all!

No but good suggestion for beta. Currently you have to look at one of the activity logs.

Re: locking messages #lock

Locking only prevents additional posts, it doesn't change the display of the Topic.

It's not included in the header, which I think it was on YG, but you can search in the activity log (Admin > Activity) for "Approved pending message" in either the All Activity or Moderator Activity lists.

locking messages #lock

Debra Claffey

Hello,
I'm the IO manager for my group. I noticed that there is a Lock Topic option in messages. Where can I find info on this?

I'd like to block viewing of some messages without actually deleting them. The example is blocking a discussion from being read after the fact except by the subgroup moderator. Would locking a topic do this?
TIA,
Deb Claffey
