Re: Why use hashtags in a group? #hashtags

My group uses a limited moderated set of hashtags for our book discussion group: #off-topic for side discussions; #spoiler for comments referring to unread chapters that some members may wish to avoid; #technical for comments on mechanics, a few others.Members can mute the tags to avoid messages they don't want to see. I'm not sure the usage is optimal, but it seems to be working, although I don't know if the membership is actually using them.

A formatting oddity appeared today

Earlier today, I originated an email in Outlook and sent to two different groups on Groups.io.? There were significant formatting differences between those two emails when they arrived at Groups.io -- and when they were disseminated to members.? What gives??

In my original email, I had highlighted some text in yellow for emphasis.?

When the message sent to ACOEM-WFD Section arrived in my Outlook later, it displayed the yellow highlighting.? (I no longer moderate that group daily -- a colleague does.)??

BUT when I went to the Groups.io website to approve/release my email to the WFDRoundtable, the text had no yellow highlights.? I clicked on the advanced formatting icon? and there seemed to be no option for color of any kind -- neither text nor highlighting.? ?Those options are available here right now.? ? Furthermore, I am accustomed to seeing messages show up and be released by Groups.io and then arrived in my Outlook inbox with fancy formatting that is not available through Groups.io.? ?So I clicked "preview" -- and there was no yellow highlighting.? I was working in Chrome, and wondered whether maybe Firefox has capabilities that Chrome doesn't.? That wasn't it -- the message looked the same.? So I gave up and DELETED the sentence that told readers to look for the highlighting, and approved it for release.? ?When it arrived in my Outlook inbox, there was no yellow highlighting.? ?

One with, one without.? Explanations anyone?

Re: Log In issues for Existing Subscribers

I have seen a problem around logging in, but I am not sure what it is.
Last weekend, I had a marathon email correspondence with a fellow owner of our group who owned and monitored the group on Y! for two decades. I would call him a "digital immigrant", not nearly a digital native, but certainly minimally literate.
He could not figure out how to log on to our group site on grio. I am not sure where the confusion arose, but the man struggled. His account was set up properly with a password. Although he changed his password, his old password seemed to retained somewhere, perhaps in a browser cache, but perhaps not, Eventually I realized that he was logged in, but did not recognize it.
Since our discussion was all email and he tried several things before he got back to me each time, reconstruction is not possible, but I agree that taking users consistently to the group home page would help.

Is there currently a way to send a survey?? if not, are there plans to add one?

Be sure to enter the member email addresses in the invitation on separate lines. I don't think it will work if you separate them with commas.

We are talking about the auto-signature.

Also, just a thought about attachments. LeeAnne, I may not be understanding you completely. Perhaps attachments would work for you if you had them set to delete the oldest as the limits approach. You could set the attachments size limit to avoid the accidental monster photo to stretch you apace even more. Just a thought.

One question this brings to mind - If a group is near its size limit and someone posts a file or an image in the Photos area, will that displace an attachment, or do only messages push attachments out?

Re: The Transfer

Shal,
I checked the spam folder and nothing there. I checked the message trash folder and went over my message folder and there is no message. I think I better submit it again.

Mark says he set something up to automatically send a message to the Y!Group's -owner address as soon as he receives the Invite. Bottom item here:

So have a look in your spam folder or anywhere else an -owner message may have been delivered.

That response should happen immediately, whereas the transfer won't actually accept the invitation, and you will not get the "new member" notice, until your turn in the queue.

Shal, I was under the impression the acceptance and joining happened right away, but a group didn't get into the queue until the transfer address was made a moderator and the request to move was received by transfer?

Are you sure you got a message saying that your group has been approved (not just created)? That needs to happen before you can invite people.

Re: #Testimonials #testimonials

I expect that's possible, but not a big priority for this group. I think those waiting for transfer are (and should be) a higher priority.

Would you be doing something different if your membership was?actually be 30% smaller?

I believe that Mark's personal characteristics and integrity *are* part of the facts. It always stems down from the top in a company. My experience not just with the product itself, but also my interactions with Mark personally, are what make me endorse groups.io so strongly.?

Re: #Testimonials #testimonials

Even though your membership has moved, I wonder if Mark ([email protected]) couldn't still move your messages over?

Dano

----- Original Message -----

Perhaps my experience will be helpful to some. I moved 2 very small
groups early on in groups.io's existence. I didn't use the transfer
agent Mark has made available because both groups were so small, and it
was easy to just invite everyone, plus they all knew we were "trying"
this to see how we liked it. It worked very well, and we remain on
groups.io.

However, I had a larger list and I really dreaded making the change for
a number of reasons. I don't know them all personally, and some are not
particularly computer literate. At first I figured using the transfer
agent would be the smoothest and easiest, given the feedback from
several owners. However I kept postponing and hoping YG would shape
up. Didn't happen - kept getting worse. Then the feedback started that
owners trying to use the transfer were experiencing delays due to the
huge numbers of folks bailing out from YG. I was concerned that might
complicate our move, and we might actually miss the opportunity to make
a transfer if YG became completely inaccessible.

I decided my archives were not important enough to move. I could move
the members who wanted to move, a re-create any necessary files. I
downloaded YG group list to a database on my computer, then created my
new group with the same name on Friday, and posted an explanation of
what would be happening to the YG group. I received incredibly
supportive feedback and gratitude almost immediately, so on Saturday
morning I started sending invites, usually 130 or so at a time. I
immediately began to get notices that the invites were being accepted.
By Sunday midday, all invites were sent, and everyone who had made the
leap was delighted with how easy it was.

So far the new list is about 20% to 25% of the old list. However folks
still continue to join, so I don't think we've topped out yet. A large
percentage of the addresses on the old list were actually no good, I
suppose due to YG's lack of maintenance, so that accounts for some.
Obviously there will be some who chose not to move, but I think that's
healthy. The people who were using the list and benefiting from it will
be on the new list on groups.io. Those who were no longer contributing
or even reading won't be on the new list, which seems appropriate.

I know skipping using the transfer agent saved us a lot of time, but it
did mean sacrificing our archives, so it's not a one size fits all
solution. However, it's worth giving some thought to.

Re: Topics I am following?

Okay, I have done it! Thanks.
?
Click on in the top left in order to bring up all of your groups and this changes the menu in the left column. ?Or click on Manage Your Subscriptions in Your Groups to change to this same menu.
?
The Followed and Muted are in a dropdown menu under Topics (left menu). Hashtags are there too.

I never do this on mobile so I'm not sure about that. But like the documentation says, on your computer go to and look on the left sidebar. There should be "Topics" and under that "Followed." Click on that to bring up the list of all topics you're following, click on the one you want to unfollow, and then click on "unfollow." You have to go specifically to , which appears at the top left of any other page you're on. Click on that first.
