Re: Site Updates - How Does He Do It!

Stan,
... is it an almost certainty that yahoo groups will be gone in a short time? Short version: No, but many are convinced by available evidence that it is very likely. ? If the latter, what is the data, evidence? Long version: The last month or more here: All, Let's not go down the rabbit-hole of recapping all the observations and speculations here. It really wouldn't advance our mission. ShalGMF Moderator -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Cherrill,
I am not sending this on top your response to respond to you, persee. You are just the last message I received on this topic. With regard to Yahoo groups crashing and burning. I knew that my yahoo group is having problems and others have complained about yahoo, but I have not heard of its impending demise, i.e., crashing, burning, etc., until I came to this group. If I accept that, then all the arguments everyone has made against worrying about groups.io is perfectly sound. However, am I just listening to what the tech savvy people on this group believe that have made everyone else believe, or is it an almost certainty that yahoo groups will be gone in a short time? If the latter, what is the data, evidence? Second, Bob said he wasn't aware of alternatives. There are a couple. Freelists is one alternative. Granted it is not as powerful and as good as YG and IO, but one amateur astronomy group is quite satisfied with it. A few years ago when I was contemplating leaving YG's I became aware of another discussion group that seemed like a good alternative. I don't remember what is was called. Maybe some of these groups (which is not a forum but email messages are sent out) do not have all the features that IO has, but for certain discussion groups they work just fine. Log In issues for Existing Subscribers
I have posted this message to the Beta Group, but would like someone else to test my observations.? Some of my members are having difficulties logging in to our specific xxxGroup Home Page.? I could not understand their complaints until I experimented with my multiple test subscriptions.? I find these inconsistencies, which I think should be addressed:
TestAccount 1 (with Password - set for Individual Messages) -- Group Home Link in footer of Individual email message takes me to Log In Page.? Log in with Email Address and Password takes me to Manage My Subscription Page. ? My Groups are listed, and I can select xxxGroup to get to xxxGroup Home Page. TestAccount 2 (with No Password - set for Individual Messages) -- Group Home Link in footer of Individual email message takes me to Log In Page.? Log in with Email and either Forgot Your Password or Send me an Email.? Link in Email takes me to Profile Page.? I must use the drop down menu for My Groups at top of page to select xxxGroup to get to xxxGroup Home Page. TestAccount 3 (with No Password - set for Digest Messages)? -- xxxGroup link in Header of Digest Message takes me to Log In Page. ? -- If I Log In with Email Address and select Forgot Your Password, the link in the Email takes me to Profile Page.? I must use the drop down menu for My Groups at top of page to select xxxGroup to get to xxxGroup Home Page. -- However, if I Log In with Email Address and select Send me an Email, the link in the Email takes me directly to my xxxGroup Home Page. It seems most helpful that any Group Home link would lead directly to the xxxGroup Home Page (without having to select xxxGroup from any list or drop down menu.)? Second choice would be to lead to the Manage My Subscriptions page with a group list that is already displayed (without having to click on a drop down menu.)? I think having the Log In page leading to the Profile Page is most confusing, as it so closely resembles the Log In page itself, and the xxxGroup Home Page must be accessed by the My Groups drop down menu. C'mon guys,
We can "what if" till the universe contracts just before the next big bang and we will not solve the issue of "What if groups.io falls down and drops dead". That's really? your questions. Forget about "What if Mark? ________ ?"? You are really worried what you will do in place of groups.io. There is no obvious answer that I am aware of but also I'm not searching and neither are you for that answer. I'm not searching for the? answer because I'm sure that groups.io will attract competitors in relatively short time. It should become obvious to savvy tech people that groups.io actually seems to be draining the (Yahoo) swamp and with thousands of groups ready to flee Yahoo prior to its' groups' group crashing and burning a viable groups.io competitor seems almost a sure thing to happen. I'm simply going to run my groups, read this and some other forums, contribute to some bug reports and not worry? I think that we should all concentrate on what a benefit we have here and start to be positive about it. -- Bob Bellizzi The Corneal Dystrophy Foundation |
Re: Import existing database in group or subgroup
#transfer
I did the same thing as you did, but I did it while I was I was experimenting with my group on Groups.io. I already had all our Files, Links, and Databases backed up on my computer, and I uploaded them all while I learned how to use the new group before the transfer. What I did with the dbase was create a table on Groups.io just like it was on Y, then uploaded my backup CVS file on my computer right into the new dbase...Worked like a charm. I let Groups.io do the transfer on the Membership List, Photo Albums, and Archived posts. I invited my one moderator, and we got used to the new site before the transfer happened.

Is it possible to import a database in CVS format into the Database section of a group? Or do I have to create a new table and insert each record? Marina |

The group is created immediately but you can't start inviting people, etc., until it's been approved. I think that usually takes a day or less. On Mon, Feb 19, 2018 at 11:58 AM, Frances <frances@...> wrote: Are you starting a new group or transferring from YahooGroups? |

Ken,
But if IO has lost its continuity, develops really severe problems, or is bought out by a company that imposes huge charges to have a group, then I think one had better find out how to start a boat under 20 feet of water. Maybe the motor could be encased in a shroud with air intake and exhaust outtake pipes 20 ft. long so the motor could be started under water. (ha, ha). Are you starting a new group or transferring from YahooGroups?
If it is just setting up a new group, in my experience, it is immediate. You might want to review the Help sections for help with preferences / settings. /static/help and /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home Frances |

Judging from other messages in the last two hours ( see Norm's post) the Queue is backlogged over 8 days due to mass exodus of Yahoo.
