New Member message when joining a group
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýOne thing I liked about Yahoo groups was that when someone joined, they were asked to type a little message as to why they wanted to join.? Then when you went to approve members, you would see their message and this would give you some reassurance it wasn't a spammer.? This saved me from getting hundreds of spammers joining one of my larger groups. ? I'm not seeing where we can turn on such a feature, unless I am missing something.? Do any of you know if we have such a feature at groups.io ? Scott Myers |

Thank you for this important information, Sharon! I didn't know about the group name change. It's been around for 19 years, I don't want to confuse my members. Marina |

Re: Wiki - Status Badges on the Members List
Hi Nancy,
Ok, I've substantially fleshed it in, and changed its title to Status Badges on the Members List. I've also added a link to it in the Best Practices for Group Management section of the wiki home page. Everyone is encouraged to proof-read it to be sure I haven't messed up the descriptions or forgotten something of importance. It would be great if it were checked for consistency in fact and terminology with the Groups.io Help page and with messages about these badges both here in GMF and in beta. applescript to parse csv display name into 2 fields?
Mac user here.
I manage a 100+ member group. We have monthly meetings and I use the
members
"download" option to generate a sign in sheet for the meetings.
We require members to use their real first and last names as their
Display Name. The problem
is, this is one field and when I load the csv file into numbers it puts the first and last name in one field. I
can then only sort by first name. This is causing chaos at our sign in tables!!!
Here is a sample of the csv file (I've bolded what I want to change)
"Email","Display Name","Username","Joined","Status(0=Normal,1=Pending,2=Banned)","Post
Status(0=Normal,1=Moderated,2=NotAllowed)","Email
Delivery(0=Single,1=Digest,2=Special,3=None)","Message Selection(0=All,1=Follow Only,2=Follow Only
And First)","Auto Follow Replies","Mod Status(0=None,1=Moderator,2=Owner)","User Status(0=Not
Confirmed,1=Confirmed,2=Inactive,3=Bouncing,4=Bounced)"
If I can get the csv file to look like this, I can sort by last name in numbers:
"Email","Display Name","Username","Joined","Status(0=Normal,1=Pending,2=Banned)","Post
Status(0=Normal,1=Moderated,2=NotAllowed)","Email
Delivery(0=Single,1=Digest,2=Special,3=None)","Message Selection(0=All,1=Follow Only,2=Follow Only
And First)","Auto Follow Replies","Mod Status(0=None,1=Moderator,2=Owner)","User Status(0=Not
Confirmed,1=Confirmed,2=Inactive,3=Bouncing,4=Bounced)"
I know how to fix this. Write a script to do the following:
ignore the first row.
for every subsequent row change all spaces to "," .
BUT, I've never written a script! I've poked around and figured our it will be in AppleScript using the Script
Editor. I've found some tutorials (did an easy one) and think with time (lot's of time!) I could work it out
BUT if someone has already done this could you share your code with me?
Regards, Gina

Re: a new member and some help please
Jackiep,
There are two imperative reasons why I want NoMail setting.
1/.. When I go on leave,
2/.. When I view my mail on line
Having a NoMail setting is an essential feature.
?
OK,
Tony

Duane,
This is a bit misleading because it doesn't generate a pendingBut it does generate "Subscription Approval Needed" notices to the moderators of the primary group. I received no notifications relating to the subgroup. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Follow up:? If someone that's not a member of the main group finds the subgroup and clicks on the Join button, they'll see the message, "You cannot subscribe to this subgroup until your subscription to the parent group is approved."? This is a bit misleading because it doesn't generate a pending subscription in the main group.? (I'll report this to support.)

Re: Two Levels of moderation
A person can't join a subgroup unless they're a member of the main group.? Once they're in the main group, they could join the subgroup and post immediately without the spam control, but would need to post twice on the main group (based on your previous comment.)
You can change the Privacy > Visibility setting for the subgroup so that it's not listed on the main group Home page.? I don't think non-members of the main group see it though. Duane -- Help: /static/help GMF's Wiki: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Search button at the top of Messages list |
Re: Who Can View And Modify Databases
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýWe have one dbase in particular that I¡¯m usually the only one that keeps it up to date, but I¡¯ve always trusted our members not to mess things up as they edit their information. This dbase holds basic information about our members and their sailboats (We all have the same kind of boats), but over time members sell their boats to other people and leave the group, and usually the new owner becomes a new member of the group. When this happens then some information needs to be updated, and over time even this information needs to be updated again. Updating never really ends unless the boat is destroyed, and when this happens the information becomes archival. ? Back at YG each member had a row of information about themselves they could edit if they wanted, but by default I was the one that generally really did it. I don¡¯t remember having these dbase options at YG, so this is a learning thing for me on how it will work at Groups.io. Since before the transfer to Groups.io some members had left our Y group, but their information stayed so it could be edited in the future as circumstances changed. After the transfer to Groups.io more members dropped out, but new members have joined the group, and some of these members are new owners of boats in the dbase. From what you¡¯ve said it sounds like only I will be able to edit many rows of information, because the original owners that entered the information are no longer members, and new owners will not be edit the information. So maybe I should just let the members view the information, and leave it up to moderators to edit the rows as new information becomes available. ? Don ? |

I created a group with four subgroups. I went back in and removed the spam control setting for one of the groups as you suggested/implied. However, at the home page for the subgroup it still gives an email address to subscribe to the subgroup. What is happening here? If someone sees this subgroup on the internet and subscribes to it, since the spam is removed for this subgroup will they have to pass the moderation criteria of the main group, or will they be permitted to join the subgroup and submit messages without any moderation? Also, one of the four subgroups is tailored just for the main group. It would make no sense to give someone the capability to subscribe to the subgroup, but yet an email address is provided to do just that. Is there a way to eliminate all the subscription and unsubscription email addresses in the home page of a subgroup? Stan On 2/15/2018 10:31 PM, Duane wrote:
They're independent. They could meet either criteria for that group or subgroup without meeting both. As you have it set, they'd need 2 approved posts in each group. Note that you don't have to choose a Spam Control on a subgroup only the main group. |
Re: re delayed message
Win,
I sent a message to my group 12 hours ago, it has not yet appeared onCould it be in the group's Pending list? How can I find out what caused the delay...If it still hasn't arrived, check the group's activity log around the time it was sent. It might say there if it was rejected for any reason. If it does arrive, you may be able to parse the Received header fields to find the "hop" at which the delay occurred. In a case like this it might show the hop from your email service to Groups.io's inbound server was the source of the delay. But that still doesn't tell you why. Re: applescript to parse csv display name into 2 fields?
Gina,
applescript to parse csv display name into 2 fields?Windows user here. I don't know applescript, but if you have access to Excel I have a formula to extract just the last name (I faced the same sortability issue with my PTA group's roster): =MID(B2,SEARCH(" ",B2,1)+1,20) In the above, B2 should be replaced by the cell on this row containing the combined display name. This formula would be placed in every row of the list (except the first), in a new column. With some limitation: It just takes everything after the first space as the Last Name. In some cases I had to manually fix the result before sorting and printing. I didn't bother to make a first name field, I only needed to sort by last name.
