Of course Mark is going to prioritize suggestions. I don¡¯t see how that in any way implies that suggestions made should be limited.

I have my message set to go out when someone tries to join.? It is in Settings, Member Notices, then I selected Pending Subscription.? Since my group is restricted, that message goes out before their approval.

Subject: [GMF] Members joining anew group, a reason?
?

Hello

My group has just been moved from Yahoo where when new members joined the group they needed to give a reason why they wanted to join

As a moderator I need to see this reason in order to approve them to the group

However I don't see this option here in the setup. Does it exist in settings somewhere?

Thanks

Who uploaded a file?

when you upload a file in yahoogroups, it tells you by whom when it sends out the email announcing it. We¡¯re testing groups and it didn¡¯t show who uploaded it. I had to get online to look. Is there a setting so we see in the email who uploaded the file? ?Tammi

Question for Sal,
?
?The bold text below from a previous reply explainns the YG position on copyright
However it does not explain the groups.io position and how it differs. Which is more
important to those who have transferred to groups.io

I just read the original post and suggest that if you have members who can't figure out how to construct their signatures that you construct their signature and email it to them. This would solve the problem until the suggestion gets implemented.?

I'm thinking that we are asking for so many modifications that they are going to get prioritized and it may take a long time to get to something that is limited in how many people would have a use.

Just a suggestion,

Re: E.U. Issues with Transfers?

Marina,

I am going through the relocating process now, well before May, do you
think I could be still sued for copyright violation?
I'm not a lawyer, and I specifically don't know UK or EU law, but I think it is very unlikely.

More likely a copyright claim would be aimed at the web site displaying the material, Groups.io. Under US law there is a safe harbor provision which prevents such claims from being taken to court as long as the web site follows a set procedure for administering the claim.

For the copyright owner that procedure is onerous enough to discourage most people from making the claim unless the work in question has commercial value.

If the copyright owner does file the claim your personal downside risk is that Groups.io removes the claimed content. No lawyers involved unless you decide to counter-claim; then the copyright owner must file suit or go home.

I second that. If you suggest it in beta I'll join you.

Re: E.U. Issues with Transfers?

All,

? I don't think you should be worried about posts or files or photos -
if you are then don't transfer ... just create a new group on groups.io
and invite the membership to follow you (the owner/moderator).
And, of course, 'shut down' the old group (all messages are moderated)
for a while (a few months), and then delete the old group.
? They posted them -online- and by doing so gave up any copyrights
to them (all 3) 'completely and forever'.? That stuff is already in the
public domain.

? The only 'issue' that I know of is related to 'moving' their email
ADDRESS to some new location (and, specifically to a place that
"runs on email").

Re: Subgroup creation, better before or after Yahoo transfer?

Marina,

By the way, I've found out that you cannot invite people to a
subgroups.
True, because they must first be members of the primary group. You invite them there.

You can either add them (which is a Premium Group feature, if I am not
mistaken) ...
Not for subgroups. Even in Basic groups subgroups have a Direct Add page. There you see a list of the primary group members with a checkbox to add them to the subgroup. What you can't do (not even in a Premium group) is Direct Add someone into a subgroup who isn't already in the primary group.

or they must joing the group on their own (through the subscribe
address, I presume).
Or, in the Admin section of the primary group there is a Subgroups page which also shows a list of the primary group members, with checkboxes for each subgroup. There you can conveniently see which subgroups any given person is in, and change them at will.

Sharon:

We have that setting now and have had it since we started the group. When checked it disallows direct memberships and requires a Moderator to approve the membership. It still doesn't require inputted data from the prospective member.

For now that is what we are doing as we are still getting members from the old YG moved over. (We chose not to import membership to clean up the deadwood and abandoned members.)

Duane, you ARE a wizard. It sounds very much like Columbus' egg, but you did find the answer.

Now we just need to find out why your description is being
truncated at about 170 characters...
If you sort out that one, I'll build you a monument.

Re: Members joining a new group, a reason?

Just realised the "Re: Require info from prospective members" topic covered what i was asking. So I'm sure not the only one asking for this feature, hope someone takes note

Have to say surprised such a basic handy option is not included anyway, Apart from that no issues at all

One thing I like about Groups.io is that the archives are much faster to search. On Yahoo, I have to wait so long for pages to load that it was grindingly boring. Old movies didn¡¯t even help. I had to watch something compelling to fill the time.

Another ¡°secret¡± ist had a series of messages from a monk in Arizona who did all the paper work to import the rose and grow it in isolation in Arizona. He took donations and promised cuttings when the plants were released from isolation. It was 2-3 years later that we got the cuttings and he used the rose to fundraise for his youth program. That part of the history is lost because the list was deleted by the owner with no notice to anyone.

To great fanfare in May of 2017, an apricot shrub rose was introduced in England by a famous rose hybridizer with no mention of the earlier red floribunda developed by Judi's gardener.

While attending the preview of the Royal Horticulture Society¡¯s Chelsea Flower Show this week, Dench went to see the special rose hybrid called the Rosa Dame Judi Dench. Grown in an Albrighton-based nursery, it took Shropshire grower David Austin eight years to perfect the apricot-colored rose.
Not everyone cares about this but this is history preserved in YahooGroups. And it will likely disappear.

Cleaning Yahoo Posts B4 or After Transfer Query #transfer

We have many old posts, for example, meeting notices that would be nice to purge. Is it possible to do this after the transfer by "subject" or other bulk deletion? Or, should we delete before transfer? As you know, deleting B4 is a tedious and lengthy process.
Thanks for any answer. Dennis

Hi All,

I screen for our group by sending an email back to the applicant requesting that they provide more information before approval. I find that some of the addresses are not real, people reply that they never applied and some are just people fishing. The small amount of info in the Yahoo window is not enough for us.
