We have that setting now and have had it since we started the group. When checked it disallows direct memberships and requires a Moderator to approve the membership. It still doesn't require inputted data from the prospective member.
For now that is what we are doing as we are still getting members from the old YG moved over. (We chose not to import membership to clean up the deadwood and abandoned members.)
