If Mark doesn't work to appoint someone as a new group owner, what you can do as an alternative depends on if anyone has moderator privileges to view the members' list with emails. This assumes Mark doesn't appoint a new owner. If someone has access to the members' list, start a new group, set up two or more owners, then send out invitations to all the members of the old group to the new group, and also post an invitation and explanation in the old group about the death of the owner and the situation the group is in, and that a new group has been started. If there's no one with access to the members' list, then create the new group, appoint two or more co-owners, and explain in the old group what happened and include a link to the new group and a link so they can join by email if you don't care if they have web access. Someone may have the entire message archive and may be able to extract all members who participated in the past, and use those email addresses to invite to the group. It won't, though, cover those who never send a message to the group If you upgrade the new group to premium for one month, you can direct add new members with their email addresses, then revert back to basic. The only other concern you may have is that the old group may have had all the privileges of a legacy basic group and a newly formed group now won't have file and photo privileges. I used blat, and figured it out. Google groups would not permit the command line email send, so I routed to my personal email with a unique subject and set up an outlook rule to autoforeward it to the group. Took a bit to get it all smoothed out, but it runs perfectly from windows scheduler now. On Sat, Mar 19, 2022, 3:34 PM Rick N <ricknak@...> wrote:

I wouldn't want to change it twice a year either, but I wish it had a simpler and shorter list and that it included Daylight Saving time choices. I'm forced to pick a different time zone that has the right UTC and people are wondering why our calendar listings say something like Mexico Central time.

How is the drop-down list in the Calendar input populated? The one in our group's calendar has tons of entries (many of which we would never use) but no choices for U.S. Daylight Saving time. Is there a way to create a more useful drop-down?

Re: Command Line Email
It's been a long time since I've played with CLI email sending programs, but I suspect that is where your problem is. Something about which port you are using and so on.? Does the program you're using have an online user group? That would be my next stop. Re: Monitor Participation
Barry,
Previous comments on participation are consistent with my experience. Cultivating widespread, meaningful participation is hard work. Fortunately, you seem to care about your group and that is an invaluable resource. Keep the faith. Have you thought about sending a survey to your members? Simply assessing who responds may be illuminating; and their answers may give you ideas about topics that may prompt further discussion. Don't assume all members share your precise interests and mindset. Also, when sending a summary of survey responses to members consider it as another opportunity to foster discussion.? Chris |

It also seems to remind some who no longer want to be members and I see a few leave some of the groups. The number of new members overall far exceeds those leaving, and I have no problem with losing members when it's because they're no longer interested in the group. Re: Monitor Participation
Hi everyone,
I agree that you can't expect a very high participation rate. However I do want members to remember my groups! I have an automated monthly reminder to members. It is a good idea to take a look at it from time to time and jazz it up a bit! /helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/managing-member-notices/monthly-reminder-notice Check out your homepage. Edit it, if needed. I am amazed at the number of groups who still ?use the default grey scale elephant banner photo! They haven't personalized it. Also are you listed in list of publicly accessible groups? If appropriate, you can list it there, even groups with a private archive. /search?p=SubsCount,,,20,2,0,0 Perhaps I am preaching to the choir here! If so, sorry. I have an old school batch file, yes, a DOC .bat file, that runs, processes a file (excel) and saves it to a folder.
for my own simplicity, I can add an additional command line to the batch file that sends it to me through email (gmail actually) I created a groups.io for the purpose of communications with the group and I cannot get it to go through the groups.io site as an emai. Does anyone have any ideas? |

I suspect that it is actually better than this groups's (i.e. GMF) with its approximately 3500 members.10% membership participation is indeed a good number. I have a group of 1300 that probably has 50 or so actively participating. Another group of 2200 with no regular participation at all; sometimes a month goes by with no messages posted to the group. That latter group services its purpose though when someone asks a question, which is not often, and springs to life for a few days with people helping the person who posted the question. As you said, in any group, you can't assume that people set to no mail are not participating. Just as people who receive email posts can't be assumed to be participating. I'm not sure where some get the idea that nomail means the member isn't participating and those receiving posts by email are participating, but that isn't the case. Some like to use the website interface to post new messages and read posts online. Perhaps they want to keep their email inbox clean. They may have some other reason for wanting no email. There are some who might be set to nomail for now, and not be a regular participant unless they need to ask for help in a post, at which time they may interact with others while they try to get the help they need. They may even switch to email while they get the help they need, then switch back to nomail. I don't understand why a group owner wants to try to force people to participate unless there's some serious reason to do so that has to do with the group's purpose. In some cases it seems that the group owner who wants to force participation when there's no overriding reason to do so has some control issues. (I can understand there are some situations where group participation might be necessary and mandatory but these would be the exception rather than the rule for most groups.) We need to accept that we will have many lurkers and fewer actively participating. I'd like to see more participation in some of my groups but as long as the group is there and members are willing to help when someone has a problem others can help with, then the group serves a purpose.
