I totally agree with you that the pictures are not as good as say Yahoo. There are other topics on this in the GMF and you can search the archives - try blurry.

I was not on the BOD when the contract was made with Morgan, the owner of Groupworks. I was a beta tester and helped implement the roll out nationwide to a non profit. Morgan and Spencer, co-founders of GW are both very accessble by phone and are great at handholding and support.

I am sure much has changed in the past 3 years, so it would be best to contact them directly if interested. I don't know of the catch. Like GIO being entirely free and full featured just 18 months ago, GW's vision was to meet the needs for clubs using a no cost model to the club owners. Like Mark has discovered with GIO, the GW free "no catch" model may not be sustainable going forward. However, in the past few months GW has introduced one discreet, static ad on each screen so I suspect that is now their funding source.

I find most GW users are over 55. They are the sort that don't want to deal with headaches of configuring group settings, managing subscriptions, etc. They just want to log in and have all their club information presented to them.

Personally, my problem with Groupworks is the fact that it's web only access. Where GIO offers real-time individual email delivery and exchange of information over email, Group Works forces users to communicate only by logging into their website. Their digest is limited to none, daily, weekly or 3 times a week. It contains a subject only and I found myself wasting time to log in only to discover the post was of no interest to me.?There is no way to communicate?a pressing, time sensitive matter to the members of your group. You would have to use traditional email to do that.?

But for clubs and hobbyists whose sole reason is routine meeting information, event registration, dues collection and record keeping, access to newsletters, files calendars, tutorials, meetings, etc it works well. Especially if your members are computer challenged or elderly. The font is large and high contrast for easier reading. The help files are large print PDFs and videos.

GW group Owners have ultimate control over their group members with direct add, removal and email address changes. Individuals cannot join GW. They can only join if the group owner or admin directly adds their name and email. At that point, the member receives an email from GW to create a password. Once they do that and log in, they land on their club's homepage.

GW serves a niche need in the online group world.

Whether you can create a subgroup depends on your group plan. Do you have a premium or enterprise plan? Then it is possible.

If you have a basic group, you will need to check when your group was formed. If it is legacy enabled, (before 1/15/2020), you can create subgroups.

The API solution would be the only choice other than manually viewing the activity of each user individually. IMHO, however, I recommend replacing "re-authenticate" with "maintain membership" as there is no authentication involved.

You don't mention how you are exactly viewing these images. Is this after you have sent it via Groups.io or before?

Don't forget that embedded images are reduced to 640px in the long dimension and those attached to emails may be resized depending upon your group settings (See Admin > Settings > Message Policies).

The Owners' Manual gives more detail.

Yahoo has been purging "inactive" YMail addresses only a monthly basis and this is the error that comes back when you attempt to send something to one of them.
Sorry for returning to the topic, but I have another doubt.
After disabling No Mail, I sent a special notice to the group to check members and so far I have about 40 Yanoo accounts bouncing with the above mentioned error message.
Strangely, their latest succesful delivery shows the same date (either guidelines or welcome notice sent in february 2018!).

Before removing them, however, I wonder: can a member with a (red or blue) bouncing account still access the group and read messages via web?

Re: Suggestions for how to pay for your group #donations

Ken,

I polled the 1900 members of my free group about the change to fee per member pricing.?

That group wouldn't be affected by the change, unless you were planning on upgrading to Premium for other reasons. The new pricing structure only applies to groups created or upgraded after Monday the 18th.

So your least cost, if you are content with the features you have, is to continue as a Basic group with legacy pricing and features.

I polled the 1900 members of my free group about the change to fee per member pricing.? AS a large group, Enterprise size in the new pricing plan; upgrading now to Premium would save

almost nine?hundred dollars a year to avoid the fee per member schedule for upgrades after Jan 18th.In four days I have had 130 responses, 81% favored upgrading now, versus staying free

and wait for the fee per member prices to drop later.? One subscriber actually favored upgrade to Enterprise at $2200 per year.? I have had twenty members leave, obviously afraid of fee per

member pricing.? I feel confident of more than enough donations to keep the list afloat.? I use Paypal to process payments for my part-time business.? I don't want to mix funds so am planning on a new,

separate Paypal account just to collect subscriber donations.??

Ken,

... but if an owner uses his/her own bank account to collect money for
a "donation" to GROUPS.IO wouldn't he/she be liable for income taxes
on that money?
This concern was raised in the beta "Pricing Changes" topic. And is a part of my motivation for the "Simplified Donation feature #suggestion":

I'm also not a tax accountant, but I believe that (at least in the U.S.) the answer is no. But (strangely) the giver may be required report it if it exceeds a substantial exclusion per recipient.

For the recipient the concern may be more one of having the operation of the group be construed as a business for tax purposes, requiring a filing as such. I think as long as the donation income represents an insignificant fraction of the group owner's income that would not be a likelihood.

But... With the upcoming per-member charges for groups created on or after Monday the 18th it would be possible for a moderately large group to incur a large enough plan payment that it could be comparable to some people's income, particularly retirees. A group the size of GMF for example would cost upwards of $1,900/yr if created after that date.

But I've never run a sole proprietorship business, so I've no idea what the rules really are.

I have subscribed to the $20 per month subscription, just FYI.

Hi All,

Seeing if there is a method by which I can have all members re-authenticate each year?? Here is the issue, some members are active, some are not, and seeing if there is an easy way to trim the non-active members each year by asking them to re-authenticate when they post, a script by which I can do this with an API, or if there is a function I am not aware of?

Thanks in advance for any input.

One obvious method would be to use the existing Donation mechanism to
accept donations from the group members, and use the proceeds to pay for
the group's plan charges.
/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/taking-donations-and-
reviewing-payment-activity

There are some limitations:

1) It is available only to Premium groups, so a Basic group can't use it
to pay for a Premium upgrade, unless the Owner is willing to front the
initial upgrade.

2) It requires that the group owner be willing to sign up with Stripe
and use their own bank account to receive the donations. There are many
reasons a group owner might not want to do that.

So for many groups the Groups.io Donation mechanism won't be the answer.

Those are initial thoughts. I'm not addressing in this message the
questions of motivating members to donate and determining what to do
about members who don't, or insufficiently, if the group's membership is
over the quantity included with the plan (400 for Premium, 1000 for
Enterprise), or if the total donations won't cover the next plan payment.

Re: backing up my list members?

Sarah,

Second of all, is there a way for me to back all of my list members in
case i ever need to import them?
Two ways.

First on the Members page use the Download tab.
Second, on the Setting page use the Export Group Data tab.
/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/exporting-or-downloading-your-group-s-data

The second method includes more detailed information, but the first is in an easier to use format (plain text CSV).

Thanks, Sandi. This is a lot of great information.?

Just looked at Group Works, and might?have gone with them if I had known about the new pricing model when we joined io. Am trying to figure out how they can offer this service for free. It looks very good and has no ads. What's the catch??
