Re: Suggestions for how to pay for your group #donations

Hi Shall,

I'm not a lawyer and don't know the answer, but if an owner uses his/her own bank account to collect money for a "donation" to GROUPS.IO wouldn't he/she be liable for income taxes on that money?

One obvious method would be to use the existing Donation mechanism to
accept donations from the group members, and use the proceeds to pay for
the group's plan charges.
/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/taking-donations-and-
reviewing-payment-activity

There are some limitations:

1) It is available only to Premium groups, so a Basic group can't use it
to pay for a Premium upgrade, unless the Owner is willing to front the
initial upgrade.

2) It requires that the group owner be willing to sign up with Stripe
and use their own bank account to receive the donations. There are many
reasons a group owner might not want to do that.

So for many groups the Groups.io Donation mechanism won't be the answer.

Those are initial thoughts. I'm not addressing in this message the
questions of motivating members to donate and determining what to do
about members who don't, or insufficiently, if the group's membership is
over the quantity included with the plan (400 for Premium, 1000 for
Enterprise), or if the total donations won't cover the next plan payment.
