Suggestions for how to pay for your group #donations

will go into effect for groups created or updated after January 18, 2021 at 9:00am PT. In response to the pricing changes, several people in the have suggested ways that group owners and members might raise funds to help pay for Premium and Enterprise groups.?

I¡¯m proposing this topic for members to share suggestions with the wider forum here. I suggest we concentrate on practical methods owners and members could use.

Thank you.

Re: Messages via email mode not going through

Thanks to all who replied.

I checked in the group's activity tab and didn't find any record of the messages being received no matter where I looked. I just emailed a test message to the group and that went through okay. I then tried resending the failed message and got the same 500 error.

The message includes two attachments, that may be the problem. The first attachment is a 10-page PDF. The second attachment is hard to open, has no file extension and is not recognized. I finally managed to open it with Firefox and it appears to be a text version of the PDF. But with the text all scrambled together.

I then tried sending a test message with just the PDF attached and that went through routinely. The member in question sends a lot of attachments, Lately he's been sending some that have no file extension. I don't know what they are or how he is creating them. Like many members, he is not very forthcoming or responsive to questions.

Both the member and myself use Gmail.
Just tested and I don't have a problem. I tested sending from Gmail web interface.

Without seeing the entire bounce message, we can only guess.? I tried one and it went through fine about 2 minutes ago.

They should be covered in the Owners Manual, /helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/viewing-and-managing-your-group-s-storage

Bulk Delete

Am now realizing my group is getting close to 1 GB storage and I see that there are 4000+ photos in the email folder.? From what I have read there is no bulk delete option available yet???? I want to delete those 4000+ along with a number of other photos that are more than 1 year old.? What are my options??

Thanks

Re: #attachments #attachments

Frances and Duane,
Thanks for your explanations. ?After checking your links and our default setting (unlimited, though we limit the size manually by rejecting large attachments), I feel convinced our new member herself chose to limit the size of the attachments she receives. Ever something new to learn.

Re: Cannot upload large binary file

Alois -- You can "upload" a link to any large file located in cloud storage and still have the document appear as a file in the group's Files area. See screenshot.

This provides access to the document without it counting anything against your group quota.

Bruce

Even Enterprise groups (with 1 TB of storage) are limited to 500 MB file/photo uploads according to /static/compare

This is a user-to-user group, no one from GIO monitors it, so we can't do anything like that.? You do have the option of breaking your files into smaller parts and labeling them as such.

Re: Can a premium-group admin change a member's email address to an existing one, i.e do a #mergeaccounts for the member? #mergeaccounts

>>> I tried it on my (premium) test group.? It tells you "That address is already registered." and doesn't change anything, so it can't be done with an email address that already has an account.? They'll need to unsubscribe and/or delete one of the accounts for themselves or you could remove one of them on the group. <<<

Duane, thanks for trying it out; yeah, I'll post a docs topic to clarify that owner manual section.

Also answered my own musing,

>>> As a related thought-byproduct item to this, I wonder, couldn't a (premium+) admin also help a member (who themselves entered the wrong/typo/etc ChangeTo/Merge address and is now stuck) recover by changing the wrong address back to the correct one through this group "change address" feature?? When a user modifies their account address, it propagates right away down to the groups if I'm correct, albeit showing now as NC until the user clicks on the confirmation email link. <<<

I did test that and it does work, albeit the user goes to blue Bouncing right away, not NC (shouldn't it be both??), and while the admin can recover the address for the user, the account stays bouncing and the user has to also unbounce their account, the warning message and unbounce link are presented to them the next time they log in; or I guess when they see (and click) the bounce message if said member is an email user exclusively.

I think the way it does it now, i.e. assume the address is correct so go ahead and change the address before it gets the confirmation, is not right to me but that's a different can of worms :)

Cheers,
Christos

Re: Cannot upload large binary file

Glenn Glazer

So, groups.io provides some file storage because it helps groups do things. Mine store agendas, minutes, resolutions and that sort of thing in a convenient archive. However, that does not make groups.io a file sharing service and there are many features (like specifically, large binaries) which aren't supported.

What I would do in this circumstance if I was faced with this problem for one of my groups is upload the binary to a Google drive account and then post the link to the file as a message and in a file in the group.

Best,

Glenn

Re: Cannot upload large binary file

Can you maybe give scp/rsync? access the the files folder, or a one-time upload of two large files?

Right. I meant other members don't see it. Unless, perhaps, you can allow members to see Admin, ?Members. But I was unclear.?Thanks for the clarification.

Re: New groups.io pricing structure

Free Google Groups let you do direct adds, as long as the group does not have adults-only content.

If you don't need a wiki or direct add, then you can create a free GG. Your GG members would need their own Google accounts to participate in Meets/Hangouts (GIO Chat), and create shared files, photos, databases, calendars, surveys (Google forms), etc.?

This is based on the setting in Default Subscription Size.
/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/setting-default-email-options-and-user-settings?single=true
Or the member has set in in Subscription, Advanced Preferences.
/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/controlling-your-email-subscription-preferences/advanced-preferences?single=true

It is not visible in Directory, only in Admin, Members.
I believe you can only change it if you set it as owner as a default by changing attachment size.
However it really doesn't affect members at large. Just those who have access to Admin, Members will see it.
