Re: Can I make my forum web only? #access

On one hand, it¡¯s already recognized that members can select a ¡°no email¡± or ¡°special notices only¡± option, but group owners can¡¯t do that for the group.
But something I didn¡¯t realize until after a hoard of subscribers joined up is that the group default email delivery can be set to ¡°Daily Summary¡±. ?For subscribers who don¡¯t change their settings, they will click on topic/subject which will take them to the web based version. ?It acts like a topic based feed. ? Sadly, changing to this option is not retroactive so we still have people who are complaining about too many emails but ¡°can¡¯t be bothered¡± to change their settings.?
If the owner does choose this default email setting, individual subscribers can still change their own setting to whichever they prefer. ?

Duane:
Also check your account setting for your Editor Preference on /account?page=prefs? The other icons won't show up if you've chosen Plain Text or Markdown.

I edited my Preferences and chose HTML (I was in Plain Text). At last, I can see all icons, including the paperclip!
Thank you, Bruce and Duane.

Just one more silly question: where do attachments go?
My group is set to Delete old attachments,? but I'd rather check and delete them myself.

Marina

Re: How to send a message with an attachment #howto

I don't see any formatting bar in my message box. Maybe because my group is set to Normalize HTML Emails?
So there is no paperclip icon (that's what I meant by "link" icon, sorry for my imperfect English).

I double checked under Settings > Message Formatting > Attachments are actually set to Moderated. So they should be allowed.

Where did I go wrong?

How can I add an attachment?
If the paperclip icon is absent, double-check your group settings in Message Formatting. If you have attachments set to either "bounce" or "strip," the icon will not appear.

Hope this helps,

How to send a message with an attachment #howto

In my moderators' group (I'm the owner), attachments are set to moderated, umlimited size.
I wish to reply to one of my own messages, but can't find a way to add an attachment to the reply.

How can I add an attachment?

Re: Additional Info Strange Happening

Hi Jannis, have her send her old email address and email me a login link, if she doesn't already use the website. If she already uses the website, then have her go into her account and change her address that way. It will give her an option to merge accounts if she has another account created with the new email address.

Janice,

She gave me an aol.com email address to use. I Direct Added her using
that aol.com email address. Here's the strange happening--*it Direct
Added her but used her old Yahoo.com email address* which immediately
went into bouncing mode.
What Duane said.

When logged in to Groups.io using her Yahoo log-in address, have her look in the "Advanced Settings For Email Aliases" panel of her Account's Login page to find and remove her AOL address (by clicking the small blue X next to it).

An Email Alias can never be subscribed to a Group, it can only be used to send messages to one's group subscriptions. The surprise (to me) is that the Direct Add matched the address you supplied to an alias and added that account to your group. I think that's probably a bug, or at least #suggestion-worthy, that Groups.io's Direct Add should have reported that as an error rather than lead you into this confusion. If that is indeed what happened.

I even tried sending her an invite instead but she reports a problem
with the link in the message--I'm not sure she followed the directions
correctly.
No doubt. You sent her AOL address an invitation, but when she goes to the Groups.io web site she's undoubtedly logged in using her Yahoo address. Confusion follows.

Look at her member record using the yahoo address.? I bet you'll find that she has the aol address as an alias.? She'll need to remove the alias in order to have a separate account for it.

A Strange Happening--I need help

I have a member that was using a Yahoo.com email address for her membership for a long time.? It started bouncing and after multiple attempts to unbounce her, I deleted her.? She contacted me about her inability to get messages from our group.? I wrote to her and explained that her Yahoo.com address was bouncing and that the messages said her mailbox was disabled.? I asked her to give me a different email address.? She gave me an aol.com email address to use.? I Direct Added her using that aol.com email address.? Here's the strange happening--it Direct Added her but used her old Yahoo.com email address which immediately went into bouncing mode.? I am 100% positive I used her aol.com address to Direct Add her.? ? I searched the membership list and she was not on the list with an aol.com address.? I have gone through this process at least three times--delete her Yahoo.com membership, Direct Add using the AOL.com address which actually gets added as an Yahoo.com address and starts bouncing.? I even tried sending her an invite instead but she reports a problem with the link in the message--I'm not sure she followed the directions correctly.? I would prefer using Direct Add but it keeps adding her with a Yahoo.com address and I can't seem to get around it.? HELP!!!!? I have left my latest attempt in? place showing a Yahoo.com address in bouncing mode.? Should I report this as a bug to Mark or does someone here have the answer for me.

Thanks for any assistance.

If this is really important to anyone, Google Groups offers both options.

Re: Can I make my forum web only? #access

Carla -- If an internet forum is what you really want, groups.io may not be your best option. Consider a dedicated forum provider, such as ProBoards (proboards.com). It is ad-supported, but you can remove the ads for a fee. If you're savvy enough to set it up, you could also use something like PHPBB on your own web site (phpbb.com). It is free and open-source.

Re: Can I make my forum web only? #access

Well, as has been said, you can't. But you can encourage group homepage use through a monthly notice, through guidelines, through text on your homepage.

It *might* discourage email if you check the settings in Admin - for example,
Remove Other Reply Options
Removes links on the website and digest to reply options other than your selected Reply To option.
Perhaps Reply to Group only.
Hide Directory since that gives access to easy email links to individual members.

Any thoughts on these or other strategies?

That's because you can't.? GIO is primarily an email based system that has a web presence.? There have been requests on the for both web only and email only groups, but no action has been taken.? You could show your support on one of those messages.

Can I make my forum web only? #access

Carla Nelson

I presume I can make my forum web only if I wish, but I couldn¡¯t see how.?

Are there any large reasons I should NOT do it? My thought is to promote more engagement, longer dialogues and added reflection, not a rat a tat of impulsive post and runs, especially not on sensitive topics.

That's how it works.

You might want to check out the setup guide for new groups.
/helpcenter/gettingstarted

And this section about moderator notifications.
/helpcenter/gettingstarted/1/step-7-set-your-moderator-notification-preferences

A moderator needs access to Admin, Members, and it works best, I think, if they can get owner emails too.

Members cannot see the activity log. Subscribe a second email address with Member permissions so you can examine your group as others see it.
