Re: Direct Add using file - how long does it take? #directadd

Jane Patterson

I am logged in as Owner with the correct email.
I can see other members that I added one at a time, but none added via the bulk upload via Direct Add with a text file.? I was able to add a single member with Direct Add.?
Nothing?relative to the bulk upload is indicated in the Activity.
In the instructions, it says "The remaining additions usually are processed within a few hours."? ?It has now been about 3 hours.? Am I just being impatient??

I assume you are seeing your Owner or Mod label in the top left corner of the group homepage. Beside Home. That would check that you are logged in with the correct email address.

Can you see anything if you go to Activity in Admin?

Re: IP for groups.io for SPF record?

Jim,

Thanks! I will try the "aspf=r".

Since you have "p=reject" in your DMARC, wouldn't your emails (rerouted) from groups.io be rejected?

Look in the Moderator Activity log to see if a moderator did it.? That's the only way I know of that someone can change someone else's email address. I don't have a paid group to verify it though.

Re: BOUNCING

David,

Gmail is owned by Google so the outage affected Gmail same time as
Youtube and other Google's services.
My point was that the first three of the four reported Gmail disruptions (including the general Google outage) occurred before Yahoo made any changes.

Hover over the dots to see the reported time span of each disruption.

I think that is very strong evidence against any connection between the Gmail outages and events at Yahoo.

Strange entry in activity log

I try to keep an eye on the activity log for my group. Today I saw a message I had never noticed before.

JN-rmonroeO2AJake71-1969 <rmonroe133@xxx> changed Walt Reitz <wjreitz@xxx>'s email address from wjreitz@xxx via web

And sure enough, Mr. Reitz's email address had been altered. (I maintain an off-line spreadsheet with all my group members' names, etc -- for administrative and statistical purposes. So I can see when an email address is altered.)

I suppose there's an innocent explanation. Most likely JN-monroe... is the same person as Walt Reitz, and he has linked the two email addresses inside the group.io software somehow, so he has administrative permission to alter the "other guy's" address. But it looks odd. And if I run a search on the activity list for email address changes (under Actions), this item does not appear. I see dozens of other address changes, but not this one.

Can anybody shed some light on this? Thanks!

Re: IP for groups.io for SPF record?

Thank you Shal for your response and explanation.

I am now considering taking out the inclusion of groups.io from my SPF record. I added it only about 3 days ago, but now from the DMARC reports I am seeing some emails being sent out in the name of groups.io but not with the right IPs (not the two we mentioned).

I guess I was trying to be completely error free. But if I include groups.io and the two IP addresses, I am still going to get DKIM failure. And the inclusion doesn't seem to fix anything but could possibly cause more spamming.

And on a higher level, I send emails to groups.io. Groups.io send them to the my group members. However the receiving mail servers want to treat the emails is really between them and groups.io. As long as they don't outright reject the emails and my group members can see read my emails, I should be all good.

Does that sound reasonable?

Re: IP for groups.io for SPF record?

David,

I would not recommend including IP addresses of third-party email servers when they maintain an SPF record. You would?not be informed?if or when they change.

We use the following for our SPF record:
"v=spf1 mx a ip4:[redacted] ip6:[redacted] include:spf.protection.outlook.com include:groups.io -all"

Incidentally, our DMARC record is configured as follows:
"v=DMARC1; p=reject; sp=reject; pct=100; adkim=s; aspf=r; rua=mailto:[redacted]"

We learned it is important to have "aspf" set to relaxed for acceptance of "send on behalf" messages. Note that issues can still occur but this is the best compromise we could effect.

It's not only likely. It's a dead certainty. Yesterday afternoon (12/15/2020, Tuesday) my group had 169 bouncing. Today, zero. All at gmail.com.

The recent bouncing (and related messages) seems to have been caused by an outage at Google. It's uniform across every group I know.

Click the link in the warning message and all should be well again.?

You should no longer need to.

Gmail reports it has fixed its problem, and Mark went through and unbounced all the Gmail addresses.
