Editing and Deleting Posts
I had thought that, if I disabled Editing Posts, it would not allow members to delete their own posts.? This doesn't seem to the case.?? Am I missing something?? Is there a way to prevent people from deleting posts?? I'd like the mods to be able to do it in case of spam that comes through, but hadn't wanted members to be able to do this.?? Thanks.? Re: Starting a new group but not running it yet?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý
Hello all,
I just tried to log into my still existing Yahoo Group.? That group was transferred to groups.io in January 2017.? I can see the photos clearly.?
However, when I try to log into a 2nd group, or which I am Co-Owner also, first I cannot view databases within the group.? If I go out of the group and come back in, I can view the databases, but when trying to open them I get an error message that I do not have access to edit the database.
I would say Yahoo definitely has its issues.

Re: Starting a new group but not running it yet?
groupmoderator3,
Is there a way to transfer all the data to a new groups.io group butI believe you can (or could*) do that simply by requesting it when you give the "go" email to the transfer agent. The difficulty with doing this though is that then you have a break in your message and other content: content posted to your Y!Group after the copy won't be automatically mirrored over to the Groups.io group; you'd have to impose on support to do that for you when you're finally ready. Shal *As of some time between 1:30 and 3:30pm pacific time (21:30 and 23:30 UTC) this afternoon I'm no longer able to access any content at Yahoo Groups. If the same is true of the transfer agent you may be out of luck until and unless Yahoo fixes Y!Groups. |
Starting a new group but not running it yet?
Hi everyone. Sorry I am sure this has been addressed already but I couldn't find it in a search. We mods are getting increasingly scared by YG's failures... but the owner does not yet want to switch. Is there a way to transfer all the data to a new groups.io group but NOT run it yet, ie: not notify the members of the switch. Just let it be ready. Then start it up when wanted/needed.?

Thank you Martyn - I have started the process on one of my groups so fingers crossed all is well - I have been prevaricating for a couple of years - just nervous!!! So now have taken the bull by the horns!!! I have some idea of the workings as I did set up a test group a few years ago but it is making the final decision that has been hard!!!
Best Wishes Jan Martyn de Young Sent: 21 January 2018 19:43 Don't worry, just go for it! I recently transferred a 20-year old group from Yahoo, and all the members, photos, files, databases transferred - it took Mark no more than a couple of hours, and all I had to do was send a couple of emails! The admin interface and web-based members area is a lot easier to use, a combination of the old familiar features, but smoother (and it WORKS!), and lots of new bits! I should have done it years ago! All the best, Martyn |

I am sure the issues I am about to ask about have been dealt with before so I hope you won't mind my asking - I am seriously going to have to transfer to Group.io - I have been putting the decision off hoping that Yahoo will get their act together but it does not seem they are going to do so. I am very nervous about the change so could you reassure me that the transfer is possible given the problems with Yahoo - I would like the Database and Photos active in the new group and are the members transferred easily please? Currently on one of my groups Photos are not active - does this work with the transfer or not - I thought I saw one message on here to say it was not. Once the transfer is made does that close down the Yahoo group or is it still available and nothing has changed? |

Yahoo groups have gotten so bad that Mark (the head of ) has said he may have to stop transferring groups soon because yahoo groups has become so dysfunctional that he may not be able to do more transfers at some point. Groups.io is so much better that there's no comparison. You may not get every single feature you want but you'll get many others that are better, and you will get 100% responsiveness from support whereas in yahoo groups it's zero. The transfer is seamless and in the odd case that anything goes wrong, Mark is extremely responsive and fixes stuff nearly immediately. The polar opposite of yahoo groups. I would just do it, and do it soon before it's too late! ? [ad stripped by moderator] |

Thank you very much Shal - I have started the process with one of my groups - the one currently causing the most problems - they are only small craft groups - 35 members in one and less in the other one so not huge like some I have seen on here - fingers crossed all goes well and thank you for your advice.
Best Wishes Jan I wish I could, but Groups.io can't do much about it if Yahoo's facilities become too dysfunctional to deliver the data. That said, I'd bet that the code behind the transfer agent is more robust than the code that Yahoo loads into your browser to access content. Also we've seen recent reports of success, such as Ruthie's. > - I would like the Database and Photos active in the new group and are > the members transferred easily please? The manage members list is the first thing copied by the transfer agent, and I would guess it to be the least problematic. That is, I've not had trouble accessing my Y!Groups' Manage Members lists via Yahoo's web interface, but I have had trouble with Photos and Files and even Pending messages. The Database and Photos are copied by default. Make sure you've made the appropriate access settings for them in your Groups.io group before initiating the transfer. That is, make sure that they are not disabled. > Currently on one of my groups Photos are not active - does this work > with the transfer or not I'm sure that if the Y!Group's access control for Photos is set to "Off" that the section will simply be skipped by the transfer agent. The rest of the transfer should be unaffected. > Once the transfer is made does that close down the Yahoo group or is > it still available and nothing has changed? There's a big green banner on the instructions page to reassure you: "We do not make any changes to your Yahoo Group. We simply make a copy of everything." /static/yahootransfer Your Y!Group members will receive a "welcome" message from Groups.io when the copying has completed. And if you set up a custom Welcome message (Member Notices tab of your Groups.io group's Settings page) they'll receive that as well. Other than that, informing your Y!Group membership in advance, and any changes you wish to make to the Yahoo Group afterward, are purely up to you. > I hope you won't mind my asking ... Nope, that's what we're here for. Shal |
