I use it judiciously as I was able to (in a test) to appear to post a generic message from one of my moderator's email addresses in Yahoo. I haven't tested it in GIO. But to a private email address it appears to come from the group owner address. I don't know what happens if they try to reply though. If your group provides any information in files or photos or wherever that could be misused, this is a wise move anyway. Last time this happened, back in late January, it generated a lot of GMF traffic (/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/70052673), along with new restrictions on when the group's member list can be made available to subscribers. Linda,
>>>?Are other groups also starting to see an increase in fake member requests from random aol addresses again that seem to originate from IP addresses in India? Today one of them actually sent a response to the automatic pending subscription member notice with a "thank u." (But no response to the actual member questions) I haven't seen one, yet, but it would kinda make sense they may be starting again since Yahoo Groups is fully winding down now, they may see this as an opportunity to start up again hoping they can slip by unnoticed through the whole hoopla. >>>?Are we supposed to send these on to Mark or do we just ban them for now? I don't know, but at the very least, keep tabs and info somewhere so if it does get to that point again we can have the info ready?quickly. Cheers, Christos |

Moderator e-mail address -- better to use groups.io address than personal address?
Hi folks,. It involves using my private e-mail address (GinaP56@...), sent through Outlook, to welcome applicants to my group. Is it possible to use the group-owner e-mail instead -- THROUGH my Outlook and not the website? Backstory: In fact, most never reply at all. I'm wondering if my mail is going to spam.....or people are just less considerate these days. Perhaps e-mail with my group name has a better chance of being read -- because the applicant has already read and responded to auto-send messages containing the group's name. ? Thanks for any light you might shed! ? Gina |
Fake member requests
HI all,
I have two groups that are geographically based membership based groups, so it's really clear to me when we are getting join requests from outside that. Are other groups also starting to see an increase in fake member requests from random aol addresses again that seem to originate from IP addresses in India? Today one of them actually sent a response to the automatic pending subscription member notice with a "thank u." (But no response to the actual member questions) Are we supposed to send these on to Mark or do we just ban them for now? Thanks! Linda |

Re: New Follow/Unfollow/Mute/Unmute button on main topics page
For group owners, there already exists a page to do bulk actions at the topic level. It was never added to the menu system because it's just a little too powerful. This strikes me as a parallel to that, but now you're opening it up to subscribers...who know even less about the system than owners do.?
All that aside, it just seems to me that you cannot know that you want to block further messages in a topic without taking a look at the existing ones. Regards, Bruce Check out the groups.io Help Center?and?groups.io Owners Manual |

Re: New Follow/Unfollow/Mute/Unmute button on main topics page
But the new functionality, and the additional functionality proposed byExactly. As an owner/moderator I read and check every single topic, of course. I was thinking from the point of view of a group member. I should have been more accurate in my original message. I think that for a group member it would be easier to go to the main topics page and just click away the topics he/she is not interested in. I can understand that this "click away" would cost Mark many more clicks and efforts, though, so I am not making a fuss about it. Still, I think it would be a good idea (blame it on my stubborn head :-) Cheers, Marina Exactly. |
Re: Moderator unable to change to ANNOUNCEMENT ONLY; also unable to post during Announcement Only (done by someone else now)
Janie,
1) This gal is definitely listed as a moderator and has done this forGroups.io was founded a bit more than six years ago. So "done this" needs clarification. /static/about 2) She is using the same email that is attached to her as a moderator. How do you know this? Even if she says she is, she should double check what it says in the upper right corner when she clicks or hovers over her name. That will show the address that is currently logged in on the browser she's using. Also, as Bruce suggested she should verify to you that she has the Mod badge when looking at the group. 3) She CAN approve new members. If she does so by email that doesn't prove that she's logged in correctly. Any ideas??Maybe she's trying to control a different group. But the primary idea is that she's logged in using a different address than the one which is a moderator of the group. This is a clue: [she can't] 1) Find the setting that always allowed her to set theYou should follow that up with her - can she see the group's Settings page? Can she see any of the Admin collection of pages? If no to the above then she is not logged in to the correct account. If yes to the above then look into her moderator permissions. AS A SUMMARY:Re-read carefully the advice you've been given. Question your assumptions, try to gather and present evidence. If necessary have her send you screen shots showing exactly what she does and does not see. Re: New Follow/Unfollow/Mute/Unmute button on main topics page
Nivard,
We are primarily group owners yes?Maybe you wouldn't. But the new functionality, and the additional functionality proposed by Marina, isn't just for group owners or moderators. I can well imagine a group member getting bored with a specific topic that has been going on for a while. Or maybe all topics on a particular subject that they're not interested in. Re: Temporary Owner
While you're sticking around to help the new owner(s), you can change
your email address for the account. Leave the group when you feel the owner(s) no longer need training wheels.
