And so, today our group got a lot of "subscribe" messages from existing members who were told (on the Yahoogroup) that they should join the new GIO group. Samuel |

What happens if an existing user tires to subscribe via e-mail?
Hello everyone
If a user who is not logged in to the web site tries to join a list that they are already subscribed to, using the URL: GROUPNAME.groups.io/g/join they are told that they are already a member. But what happens when a user who is already subscribed tries to join via e-mail, i.e. via sending an e-mail to: GROUPNAME+subscribe@... Does it show in the group's Activity log? Does the user get a notification that he is already subscribed? Samuel |
Wiki image library Add New vs image Add By URL comparison

Hi folks,
Here's a curiosity question.? Back when our groups' move was done and I wanted to create several common how-to wikis (some with images) for all 6 of the groups I admin, since I found out I could reveal?through the Advanced editing toolbar?the wiki page HTML source code, and manipulate it using just a text editor,?I figured?I'll treat the task as creating HTML template pages, create one comprehensive set for one group, then do a text and replace of the common parts that change (like URLs, group names, emails, etc) plus any small custom changes per group (like function and group-specific rules or delete not applicable sections), and paste it into the source code window of the new group's same wiki doc.? When it was time to insert the images, I tried first the Add New image library method and found out it results in the images losing their original name and been renamed to auto-generated sequential numbers after upload. ?I noticed that those numbers could be predicted or figured out (because this method uses an internal?wiki image?running counter), but it would result in as many img src= search and replace ops as total source images, for every doc with images, for every remaining group, not to mention for future updating of the docs in case I ever wanted to replace the full page, I'd have to go through the same amount of extra work.? So I chose the Add By URL method instead which leaves the filename intact and would require only one img src= search and replace op per doc per group, and I uploaded the source images on a same-named subfolder of FILES for each group. Now that I know more about how GIO works, I can see that the URL method I used would result in broken images if we ever made our Wiki public, but I highly doubt we will ever do as all those groups are private.? So I figured I'll just leave things well enough alone, but was still curious;?space-wise they are the same, upload time-wise the same pretty-much, besides the above issue, as to any other possible advantages and disadvantages of each image insertion method.? Cheers, Christos |

New spam control option
Mark mentioned on the app subgroup that there's a new option on the Settings page, ? In the spam control section, the label was changed from Moderated to Moderation.? The 3 choices now are: "Not moderated", "All messages are moderated", and "Messages that start new topics are moderated".? This is a group-wide setting as opposed to individuals.

Re: Help, one of my new groups is getting tons of "Re: reply to subscribe"
Sorry but I think that could possibly confuse others.
Reply to this email is not ambiguous. There is a Reply to button or link on the message in a visible place on the email in question which is displayed or they could not read it. It require almost no thought.?? One isn't asked to compose a message or anything like that. Simply Reply to this message. Seems like a true no brainer. -- Bob Bellizzi |

Re: Testing Ways to Subscribe - Can't stop GIO from logging me into my own account
Darlene Dimitrie
Once again, thank you everyone.? I have gotten a lot of valuable information from everyone.
Thank you Christos for that very detailed explanation.? I will try it out. First, the answer to my troubles, at least for the email address I managed to subscribe today, was to clear out the cookies.? I chose Google Chrome as my "testing" browser and use MS Edge as my "live" browser. I don't use Google Chrome for anything else, so I don't have to worry about deleting cookies and other info for other websites. It worked very simply, never shipped me to the groups.io website, which is what I am looking for.? This is for users who strictly want to deal with the email address. I will review all of your comments again to see whatever other nuggets I can find. Thank you Darlene |

When editing the hashtag, tick the "Use by Mods Only" checkbox. Please note, however, this will not keep people from replying to the already-existing topic (hashtags are applied to topics, not messages). If you don't want people to reply, tick the "Replies by Mods Only" checkbox also. See screenshot below. Bruce |
