I believe, and I have no proof of this,? but as you add directly Groupsio builds a groupsio account as you go.? So between the invite and the member acceptance,? groupsio has everything it needs to create an account for that member.? At least that is the way it seems like it is working for me.
Anyone that's a member of a group has an account.? They won't initially have a password (and really don't need one if they don't want.)

As far as Direct Adds (or Invites), you can enter them all at once.? There will be a delay if more than 20, but often only a couple of hours.

That depends on what you mean by email information". Check that the address from which your member is sending is the one that is registered with your group/Groups.io.

As has been discussed here several times, that can't be done.? All you can do is add the customized message.

The OPs comment about the Invite option below the optional message box, which doesn't appear to perform any function, hasn't been addressed.
The Invite message is another member notice that you have to create.

New owner help please #howto

Good Evening,

I have just moved over from Rootsweb and it's a massive learning curve. However, I am in love with groups.io. I have had a quick search but can't find what I need.

1. A member has asked about replying when he is on summary mode...."Do not reply to this email. To ... reply to a topic click the subject." But then couldn't see any obvious Reply button."?I note that some of my membership are showing as Summary and some as?Summary [R]? please could someone explain the difference and how the subscriber replies to messages from summary (not that I really understand how he can see what he is replying to from summary mode)

2. A member has reported regarding posting an image that "it only seems to accept jpgs, as I found when I tried a bmp [no error message, just nothing happens]" again I could find nothing about image types that would be accepted and which (if any) would not.?

Many thanks for any support you can offer and apologies for the fact you have probably already answered these questions a million times.

Best wishes,

Sherry Landa

Yes, an important distinction between "directory" and members list.
The Admin, Members, is a complete list. Viewable by owner and those moderators with the proper permission.

Directory only lists those group members who wish to appear in the directory and only viewable by those who appear in the directory.

Rootsweb on my list #rootsweb

LINDA MERLE

Hi folks,? some member subscribed herself as the name of my rootsweb list.? So everything was cross posting. On the rootsweb side it went into moderation as my groups.io list is not a member of that list. I was getting 5 emails for every post to Groups.io.....Thought maybe I had done it somewhere in the Settings (or Groups.io is psychic!)? Finally found it.? Removed it.? A few hours later the person added it back.? I found her on the rootsweb list with her real email address and sent her an email, then banned the name of my rootsweb list.? If I migrate another list the first thing I will do is bann the name of the old list to avoid it happening.

Just an FYI... And now we have a rootsweb tag.

Re: Subgroup for your own Moderator's Forum? #moderators

Frances - thank you for your input, those tips are definitely useful.? However, I was more asking about advice on the concept of using a subgroup for moderator private discussion, than on advice on how to actually perform message moderation.? Particularly, if anyone has found a more preferred way to coordinate your moderators "body of knowledge".? I think a subgroup is a good way to go to do this... just wanted to solicit for any advice before actually going forward with it.
Thank you,
Bryan

Moderation works well, I think, on Groups.io
If a moderator clicks to edit a post that needs moderation, a tag shows on it "claimed by joe blow".?
See this wiki page:

Overview -?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Message-Moderation
How to -?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Approving---moderating-a-message

And of course, you can moderate totally by email.

Also I should mention you can put a note in a member file - viewable only by moderators.
Go to Admin, Members. Choose a member name. That's where you can see email delivery history. But there is a Notes button. That's where it would be.

Re: What are the issues we may face with Direct Adding members? #direct

Until you mentioned job hunting, I thought the group was for coffee lovers of Starbucks. :)

Otherwise, Our group is 2,783 membership coming over from GeoCities to Yahoo to GroupsIO.?

Since the move, 91 have signed up.? That's not even a full 5% of the old membership.? Thus, this topic has my interest greatly.?? Many of our group's folks are mechanics and not computer savvy.? Sure, they can read emails on their smarty phones and reply, but put them in front of a computer and they become lost.

Before the move from Yahoo to GroupsIO, folks asked if the membership needs to just be 'switched' without doing anything on their part.? Without funds, it wasn't possible to do this.

Hoping to hear how this goes.? I wouldn't mind entering a few dozen to a few hundred in batches.

But there are problems.
The messages I received are From : me,? Reply to : me , Arrg!
There seems no log or record Delivery of the Special Message ( wanted to check the delivery details, who from, who to. )
- You can change your display name to Owner if you wish.

- You can send a message to an individual member:
From the wiki:?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Owner-emails
Note to Member / Member Notices
?
You can also send a "note to member" with just the group owner email address. Your personal login email address will not show.
?
Go to Members. Select the member.
Go to +Owner Messages button.
Click Reply.
If Note To Member doesn't come up, change to that from the dropdown list.
BCC yourself or all mods.
Send.
The message will only have the group owner email address.

- You could also create a new email address that hides your identity and post with that. (Create a second account.) Be careful that you don't delete the owner email address.

- Be sure that email addresses are hidden in the message archive.
See other settings -?

  1. How many can I add in one go?
  2. Do members remain if I downgrade the Group to the free plan?
  3. Is it correct for me to assume that directly added members will be able to receive and reply to mail via their email clients without needing a groups.io account?
How to do direct add:

1. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/20-Invitations-Limit
It is an anti-spam security measure. It is fast.

2. Yes, members remain if you downgrade to free. In fact, it is recommended that you get premium for a month if you have a large group of members to add all at once.

3. They must register with Groups.io with the email address. But it is automated when you direct add someone. If they don't have an account with that email address, they will get the necessary email that creates it.

Some groups have a mod's forum - a subgroup. You can hide the group from the main group, if you wish (doesn't show in the menu on the left.)

Re: Completely edit default messages for invites, direct add, etc

?I have being trying to do the same as the OP, particularly to the Invite message.? The method described in the Wiki page that you linked to does not work, it simply fixes the message in the middle of the default message.

In desperation I believed that by deleting the invite message from the list then going to add new one I would start off with a totally blank form that could complete and lose the default message. I was wrong and to make matters worse to get the Invite message to appear in the message list I had to add something in the optional message box; even a full stop suffices.

I have yet to find a method of stopping the default message appearing; a message that doesn't suit my needs.

The OPs comment about the Invite option below the optional message box, which doesn't appear to perform any function, hasn't been addressed.
