Re: Completely edit default messages for invites, direct add, etc

Mike,

I have yet to find a method of stopping the default message appearing;
a message that doesn't suit my needs.
As others have said, you can't.

But you can use a horizontal line at the top and bottom of your custom insert so as to clearly separate it from the boilerplate.

Re: How to find (not disclosed) emails?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

That is too easy! We have about 1200 members so should have no trouble following your instruction.

As for the (not disclosed) I take it there is no way to recover them? The system obviously HAS the email as they are mixed in with the expressed emails in a logical progression. So one would think there would be a way to get the email out as the owner/moderator of the list!

In any case, thanks, that will save me a bunch of cut&paste!

Now you can take all of these lists and do a sort for duplicates in EXCEL.? When done, you could have a good listing to do INVITES here from GroupsIO.

If it were me, I'd log out of the site, then try entering various email addresses I have in the "Email me a link to login" page to see if one of them works, /sendloginlink

Go to the following link:

See if there is an ADMIN section in the left side listings.
Click on it and scroll to bottom. Look at right side.
If not -- are there any other Owners/Co-Owners you could contact?

Re: Subgroup for your own Moderator's Forum? #moderators

Bryan,

In our case, I'm considering creation of a subgroup that is
restricted to moderators/owners, and private, for them to have a
private place to discuss, share knowledge, training, etc.
I think that's a fine idea, with just one caveat: you end up with the subdomain addressing scheme.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Why-use-a-Subgroup#Subdomain-addressing

If you have, or are planning to have, other subgroups then you'll have that anyway, so one more subgroup is fine. Otherwise you might care because:

1) Having that addressing scheme will tip off the members to the fact that there is at least one subgroup, even if that subgroup's privacy settings prevent them from even learning its name.

2) Some people think the subdomain addressing scheme "looks funny" or is otherwise undesirable.

Essentially, modeled after this very Group Managers Forum... just for
our group, only.
Two of my Yahoo Groups have a separate group for the moderators, most do not. Sometimes it was convenient when there were things to discuss, but largely they went unused. I didn't make a subgroup for the mods of this GMF largely because the Yahoo GMF ran without a separate moderators' group and I don't think we ever missed having one.

One of my Yahoo groups that moved here years ago had a separate moderators group, and I'm quite happy having that as a subgroup now. But that group has other subgroups that the primary members can see and join.

So I think it is very much a "Your Mileage May Vary" situation. It will depend a lot on the culture, activity, and size of your group; as well as of your moderating team. GMF is a very open group, so we don't need to have private discussions about whether someone should be admitted to the group and other matters of member management. My Yahoo Groups that had mod team groups were restrictive in their membership.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

CHANGE: Modified message import code to support mbox files from Yahoo
Group's export system.
Yay! That will help many who've received their GetMyData files and have been wondering how to import the messages. I'm assuming that the pre-paid upgrade of the target group to the Premium Yearly plan is required for this too.

BUGFIX: When changing your email address, we were sending the warning
email to the new email address when we should have been sending it
to the old email address.
That could explain some of the confusion people have reported in GMF...

NEW: Added additional information to the Sent message requiring
approval activity log line, specifying exactly why a message was
moderated. This duplicated the Message from member required approval
because of virus line, which I have removed.
Excellent. I recall we had some in GMF who were puzzled by why some messages were held pending. This could help resolve cases like that in the future.

NEW: Added 'Deleted Account' activity log entry for when people delete
their accounts.
Another good one for resolving mysteries.

CHANGE: Changed Zendesk to send back an acknowledgement when a support
email is received.
Is that a change, or a bugfix, I wonder. It used to send acknowledgements. The last one I kept was back on October 13.

NEW: Special messages are now sent with the subject tag [Special].
Helpful in those groups that use the feature.

Comments about these others are also welcome:

BUGFIX: When a poll was created and moderated, if a group moderator
edited the poll before approving it, the poll ownership was
mistakenly changed to the moderator.
CHANGE: All premium groups now have 20GB of storage.
CHANGE: The 'Note Sent To Attendees' email sent to people reply yes to
an event, as well as the email notifying someone they have been
moved from the waitlist to the attending list, were sent from the
+owner email address. They are now sent as coming from the creator
of the event.
INTERNAL: Wrote a new utility to do some consistency checking and
cleanups of the various databases.
API: We are now ratelimiting the /downloadarchives endpoint because of
abuse.
INTERNAL: Developed a new system to make it easier to grep through all
the various logs to research problems in the system.
INTERNAL: Switched from a redis-based rate limiting system to a custom
system.
INTERNAL: Switched from a redis-based session tracking system to a
custom system.
CHANGE: Display the updated date in the 'Uploaded' column in the files
section.
CHANGE: Previously, when a group had separate footers checked, we
would not try to strip out any remnant footers from incoming
replies. Because some mailers combine multiple text parts when
replying, we still need to look for these footers in replies,
otherwise unsubscribe links could be inadvertently sent out.
BUGFIX: For some reason, a few people started receiving duplicate
summaries the last couple of days. I refactored the code that
generates the summaries and that fixed the problem even though that
code hadn't been touched in months.
NEW: Added new Event Summary Email interval: Bi-Weekly on Fridays.
BUGFIX: For enterprise groups without a custom home page, setting
disable sign up to true would result in an endless redirect.
API: Added /updatewikipage, /deletewikipage and /deletewikirevision
endpoints.
BUGFIX: For people on special messages only, the message footers
wrongly said You receive all messages sent to this group.
API: Changed moderated to moderation in the Group object.
SYSADMIN: Upgraded hot spare database instance to have the same
resources as our main database.
BUGFIX: Fixed line breaks in the index in the plain text digest.
API: Added plan field to group object.
API: Added nice_group_name, cover_photo_url, icon_url, subs_count,
most_recent_message fields to the member_info object.
API: Changed the sort options for the /getsubs endpoint and added the
set_home_page parameter.
API: First pass at /getdatabaserows endpoint.
API: Added is_reply field to Message object.
INTERNAL: Lots of technical debt formatting issues cleaned up.
API: Added /getdatabases endpoint.
INTERNAL: Split smtpauthd from smtpd server to make things more clear.

Please call out any you find significant.

Re: Yahoo extended deadline for content download

See the wiki page on moving to Groups.io.

Info on moving members as well as uploading messages.

?
Here's Option 1: ?Lena has a Perl script to get the messages into the archive, details at /g/GroupManagersForum/message/22251?
?
This option is free. It works from an mbox file (e.g. a getmydata download from Yahoo), or from the messages obtained by using the yahoopedia download script. It will not work from a PG Offline download.
?
The script has mechanisms intended to post messages as if From the original sender, even if a change of email address is involved. The script cannot get the date to match the original posting date, but does include that information in the message body. You can search for followups and tips by looking for mbox upload and #ioimportpl in the message archive.

You have to be a Moderator of the group to get the email addresses.

A problem deleting an unused group

Back in November I set up a group (PAXBoard) as a test when an organization I belong to was considering moving to groups.io from Yahoo!groups.?

Re: Yahoo extended deadline for content download

Donald,

Per your comment,
"As I understand it, the PGO program will eventually be able to archive
GIO content for more thorough searching through the messages. That
will happen most likely after the work on P2G is finished."

That is really good.? At present reading on the GroupsIO website for messages or search is a bit time consuming.? PGO worked much like the old fashioned dial-up offline email readers did in the past.? Think JUNO and NETZERO era.???

Having a PGO4GIO Reader/Reply software would make a very useful interface to use.??

Not sure if the phpBB would take on.? phpBB is one of the most hack attacked softwares on the internet.? phpBB is user board software for web hosting sites.?? That's one big reason why our group chose GroupsIO in the first place.

Is there a way to get the real email addresses? Should I RTFM again?

Thanks!

Re: Comcast problems again?

I passed on the Wiki information to my member and now at least Comcast is not deleting the IO messages before they even hit her spam folder on their website. However they are now landing in the spam folder there so she has to contact them to ask how to mark them as "not spam" as she can't find a way to do that there. So there is some progress anyways and some of the emails are finally coming through to her.

Re: Completely edit default messages for invites, direct add, etc

I don't know about other default messages, but the invite message is only 4 lines telling the recipient that they have been invited to the list, how they can contact someone for more info and how they can accept the invitation. I don't see how it could be made any shorter. I add another paragraph with a little info about what the content of the list is like and welcoming them to our group. There's never been any problems with this as far as I know. I really don't see what the issue is.

For me, they are too long and emphasize things that are not important to the way that my members will be using Groups.io.

Why are we forced to use these defaults??
