I think that Groups.io has or is currently developing support for importing
Yahoo .mbox files. I started a query with [email protected] about this a
while ago and got a response on January 6, 2020 that included "We can now
import the messages from your Yahoo Group export... At this time we are not
able to import any other parts of your Yahoo group."

I haven't yet done the import process myself, but you may want email
[email protected] as well. I have a pre-paid-for-a-year premium group.

You can find out how much you are using by clicking on ?Upgrade in Admin.
All members can get an idea from Photos in the left sidebar. The info is below your albums.

Not everything is counted towards storage. See?/static/help#what-is-counted-towards-the-storage-limits-for-my-group

And

/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Managing-Attachments%2C-Files-and-Photos

You are supposed to be notified when you are getting close. I believe that it is being ignored for now.
However, you should double-check your settings to see whether you like your choice about Out of Space in Message Policies in Admin, Settings.

John -- It often happens that folks will apply and subsequently lose interest when they receive a pending subscription notice or some other document and find out the group is not about what they think it is. To that end, consider putting something like THIS IS NOT A DATING SITE in your group description and/or home page.

I don't believe they can see the archives until they are approved.? I thought these people might be bad actors or possibly just not technically proficient.
You might actually be able to head off some of these requests by making your message archives public, but it's too late to do that now (the decision is one-way). Generally speaking it seems unlikely that anything is seriously broken.

Thank you Bruce,

Our Group is:

We are not doing anything to advertise.? I don't believe they can see the archives until they are approved.? I thought these people might be bad actors or possibly just not technically proficient.? Only one of these had an email address that had been having difficulties receiving email that I had found searching the forum such as RR was having trouble for awhile and I remember a couple of others that I had never heard of were marking as spam for some reason.? But I think that had been straightened out.? For now I suppose I can only assume these were bad actors and maybe some percentage of technical proficiency.? The process does work and we have so many more options here than we had before the move.

John -- Probably. The "bad guys" tend to be quickly discouraged by anything that asks them to identify themselves.

One of the moderators has also sent emails asking about their request from his personal account thinking that is possibly marked as spam by their email provider.? We've heard that happens.? They don't reply.?
All the more reason to think these applications aren't legitimate.

We have had many more requests to join since moving with the automated move from Yahoo a couple of months ago.? In fact we had 10 requests to join in 2018 and none in 2019 with yahoo.? We've had 15 or more since the move 2 months ago.? I can't explain this.
Not sure what 99% of 15 is.? :-)

Are you doing something to publicize the group now that you weren't doing before? Simply sending repeat notices that you're moving could generate interest. I would also be interested to know the subject matter of your group. Some subjects seem to attract more bad eggs than others.

In any event, it sounds to me that your pending subscription notice and other efforts to screen new subscribers are doing what they're supposed to do.

That is exactly what I did, including the cc, but it turned out that the From line showed my email name = xxx . com @ groups.io.? I had only copied the person's email address from the pending member list, but had not sent the message through groups.io, only through my private email.? It was frustrating.? Maybe if I delete that address from my Contacts, it might help.

As an aside, I finally decided that that message got rejected from icloud.com because, given the address in the From line, they thought it was coming from a bulk sender.? When I clicked on the Help in the rejection, that is what was being talked about.? I mistakenly thought I might need to send it from an Apple device, my iPad, which I did and it worked. Sent again from my private email.

Re: Are scammers attempting to join our group?

Consider turning on reply moderation for new users (only), admit one, and see what happens. Of course, if your group site contains information that outsiders shouldn't see, that's a problem.

Re: Reply to Sender #featurerequest

Jim,

When we use the "Reply to Sender" feature at the bottom of the emails that we receive, the original email is not included automatically so we have to restate the reason we are doing the reply.

That's true. Because those are mailto: links that open a new outbound message in your email interface. Unfortunately most email interfaces don't support the inclusion of a body quote in such a link so Groups.io does not attempt to do so.

To get what you want your other option is to use the View/Reply Online link and use the Quote Whole Post button while composing your reply online.

No, it won't be if replying on the GIO site.? You have to elect to copy any or all of the message yourself.? Your email program is responsible for what it does, if that's where you're sending from.? This was all hashed out several years ago (check the beta group) and what is now done is the optimized version.? Also see /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Replying-to-messages

It would be nice if we could click on Reply to Sender and have the original email included in the reply.? That way, in many cases, we could simply say, "In response to your email below the answer is........".

Thank you,

Jim

Re the email address generated by something (see below) I would also like to know about it. Sometimes email is sent under that address and I get an error message that I cannot send from that address. Thanks.

My real question is what generates the email address [my email name?= xxx . com @?] when I do send a personal message from my xxx . com address.? That is not an email address I want or one that anyone can reply to. I need to know what generates it so I can avoid it.?

That's generated by GIO when a message is sent from the site.? See /static/help#dmarc? If you're sending directly from your email address to the person, it shouldn't go through the site, so not sure what you're doing.

The simplest version:
Have them send an email to YOURSUBGROUP+subscribe once they're members of the main group.? They'll never need to use web site if they don't want/need to.? As a bonus, if they set their email program, as many do, to include a name or nickname, i.e. John <jmith@ email.com>, their display name should get populated with that name/nickname, John in this case.
