If I open them there is nothing to see, and they each take up only 1.8k. They seem to relate to old (migrated from Yahoo) posts that contain links to Flickr. I guess I'll leave them alone.

Also Firefox seems to be the problem as she has access in IE but that still should not be.?
Is this a problem for Mark?

I've had the Facebook Integration running for the past couple of weeks. One thing I've noticed is that the subject lines are really long and repetitive.
The Facebook page 'nickname' is included with the full Facebook name and that makes it kind of long. They look something like this:

"[GroupName] Facebook Nickname - FULL FACEBOOK PAGE TITLE - shared XXXXXXXX's post #facebook"
?
Is this a Facebook thing or is this something that can be shortened?

Groups.io RSS Feed validation? #issue

 

Hello!

I'm hoping to use the RSS Feed from Groups.io to create updating content for a website still under construction.? However, the Groups.io feed doesn't validate.? I used both the homepage and the rss feed page for the parent group and all subgroups, and got the same results from two different online feed validators:




Is this a common problem that can be fixed, or am I just doing it wrong?

appear when I go the the CH Photos section ... clicking on the
photos inside the album individually and they will open visible.
That's very peculiar. The images shown as Album covers, in the Album, and when you open the particular photo all are fetched from the same server, at least in my test group. So I can't imagine how the individual photos would be visible to her but not the miniatures in the album page.

If they had come from different servers I could almost imagine that she had inadvertently blocked one of them with security settings or an add-in in her browser. But that doesn't make sense when they all come from the same server.

It is possible that the URL for each image generated in the Album page has a broken or stale access key. Using her browser refresh function, F5, or cache-bypass function, Ctrl+F5, might fix that.

I can't post to any of the groups, ...
Also peculiar, but since she didn't say how she tried posting (I'm presuming on the web site, not via email) nor what was shown when she tried I'm at a loss to guess what the problem might be.

Hi Everyone,
One of the mods, who has lines of members waiting on help to fix their horse's sore feet (some can't even stand up any more), is having issues.? She needs the photos and messages to be working so she can help but she sent me this message this morning:

I can't post to any of the groups, nor can I see the contents of any of the photo albums right now. This started yesterday and I can't figure out what the heck is going on. I can open files, access any of the "More" functions under each poster's message, access all the Mod functions, follow links but if it's a photo album it won't display the photos - all I see are white boxes and the labels under them. The cover photos appear when I go the the CH Photos section and scroll thru the listings but when I click on an individual album, it opens to the blanks.?

?

I just remembered we had similar problems on Yahoo sometimes so I just tried clicking on the photos inside the album individually and they will open visible.


Any ideas what the heck may be going on??

It is only this one mod who is having the problem.
Any one have any ideas on how to fix this for her???

messages?
The one thing you can do, if you are the one creating the events, is to include a reasonable amount of specific information in the event description. Content-sensitive spam filters are typically more likely to pass a message that has more unique content.

But generally speaking, no, whitelisting is something the affected members have to take care of themselves.

In some email services it is sufficient for the member to mark those messages as "not spam" a few times and the filter will learn. Others offer that promise but don't learn - or not very quickly.

In some email services putting the sender address in the user's address book will "whitelist" that sender (for a group's event notices, that would be the group's posting address).

In some email services you can create a filter that recognizes, say, the group's subject tag and moves all messages with that tag in the subject to the user's inbox (overriding the spam filter).

I'm no expert, but here's what I've experienced with spam.


I've had trouble with this, except that it's happened to me, not so much to my group. The problem is that some providers, particularly those associated with phone companies, but probably others also, have automated spam filters on their web sites. Unfortunately, some of these filters can't be turned off or disabled. I have to go into the spam folder on the web for my provider, and check all the messages as "not spam"; they come to my inbox within my email client, and I have to go through all of them. It's the only way I can temporarily clear out spam. Within the next week, the spam folder has another bunch of messages, some of which might be legitimate; also, some that were always legitimate get marked, again and again, as spam.

My group has a recurring monthly calendar appointment.

This week I found out that the reminder emails I have going out are appearing in some member's email inboxes as spam.

Is there anything I can do from my end to help whitelist these messages?

I have my own domain and use an email address like tobewan@ mydomain.com.? My account on groups.io uses that email.? My mail is hosted in Gmail and I have a gmail address like tobewan@ gmail.com.? I have tobewan@ mydomain.com registered as an alternate email on my Google account ("Other email addresses you can use to sign in to your account").? I prefer and advertise my email only as tobewan@ mydomain.com (who, knows, maybe I won't use Gmail in the future).
So I wish to login to groups.io with my Google profile and use tobewan@ mydomain.com as my email address there.
Will putting my Gmail address in as an Email Alias in my groups.io account accomplish that?? Or does the primary email address have to match the Google address?

If you use an eMail client you can set up your Google account as POP3
and receive and send mail without ever signing in to Google.

Having looked a bit more into the reCaptcha and noCaptcha options from
Google I realise they work very much on keeping Google's cookies in
your browser. noCaptcha in particular relies on identifying your
browsing habits from a cookie, and if it doesn't find one forces you to
go through the 'select images with cars' routine ad infinitum.

Google rightly assumes that most won't delete cookies regularly or
ever. I am also not sure whether it also assumes you remain logged into
Google, as some but by no means all will, or also whether blocking
third party cookies also defeats the process.

I only log into Google if I ever need to access my (rarely used) GMail
account or for a few other things. Google cookies are deleted everytime
I close my browser, other cookies reviewed and deleted once a day.
Third party cookies are blocked, many of us do this to reduce tracking
and for other security reasons.

For these and other reasons Google's Captcha is not as revolutionary as
they claim.... May suit many but not all.

Thanks for the info.? I'm moving 60 subscribers from a wiggio group and was checking to see if there would be a problem.? I agree with comments in that thread that there are cases where you have a number of already agreed subscribers so it should be a simple matter to direct add them.? And I certainly support Mark's efforts and headaches dealing with spammers.? I'll direct add them and see how it goes.

It isn't a limit, per se, but if you add more than some number in a 24-hour period your Direct Add will be moderated. That number was initially 20, but may or may not have been increased since then.


And suggest that it be mentioned on the Direct Add page.
That's a good suggestion, but it is possible (like most anti-spammer limits) Mark won't want to say exactly what the limit is.

This wonderful site is accessible to all of us with disabilities; must
it be ruined with captchas?
It seems that the internet is the kind of neighborhood where doors must have locks.

I understand you've had great difficulty with CAPTCHAs, but hopefully your worst fears won't come true here. There are at least two mitigating factors.

1) Mark is only talking about the registration flow - when you first create an account on the site. You only have to do that once, unless you create additional accounts for testing or other purposes.

2) As Lena pointed out (in another thread), you can create an account by using the email +subscribe command and thereby avoid the CAPTCHA.
