Re: NEW MEMBER REQUESTs--is there a way to require them write WHY they want to join?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hello,

You can do this through Groups.io.? Scroll down the left side under Admin>Settings>Member Notices.Pending Subscription as type.? Type in whatever message you wish to post.? Be sure and click at the end of the page to save the posting and make it active.

Subject: [GMF] NEW MEMBER REQUESTs--is there a way to require them write WHY they want to join?

When the group I own used to be on Yahoo, we had a requirement that they state why they wanted to join. It helped to a degree to weed out the wrong people. Can this be set up in IO???

Many/most now use the Pending Subscription notice, /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Screening-New-Members-Using-the-Pending-Subscription-Notice

Re: YAHOO email addresses - recommendations ?

I'm a network administrator and I'm telling anyone who will listen to leave Yahoo and either go to Gmail or Outlook. If Yahoo can dump Groups the way they have, I surely wouldn't trust the future of email services.

Speaking only for myself, a large percentage of what I know has come from members.? Yes, I do spend time, often too much, verifying things to make sure we have the latest/best/correct information available when questions arise, but in many cases I wouldn't have even thought of looking until someone mentioned a particular situation.? Because Mark has been so responsive to change requests and improvements, it can be difficult to keep up with him sometimes!

Teresa, FYI I got the same error you did three or four times and then one time it just worked and it all went quickly after that.
I paid and initiated the transfer yesterday morning, and it has now completed.

I tried typing it in manually rather than cut and paste, logging out/back in. I don¡¯t know that these made any difference, and that it isn¡¯t just yahoo being glitchy. But in any case, getting that error doesn¡¯t mean it won¡¯t eventually work.

Re: Email addresses with/without dots

Chris, I'm only reading mods at the moment too, which is not a denigration of anyone elses' knowledge or ability, and I don't think Sandi meant her comments in any derogatory way.? Those of us who come from yahoo gmf have relied on Shal's extensive knowledge of yahoo's glitches and work arounds for years, since neo actually, we've learned to depend on him and trust his knowledge.? Experience counts, and his is the longest and most in depth of anyone's, at least since i've been around.? Mods here are excellent, I take nothing away from any of you, and some members here have extensive experience on .io, everything helps.
Like Sandi, I'm more dependent on the guidance of "experts," it make sense to me.? I know we all appreciate all the input we can get, and the experiences and difficulties of others to learn what to do and what not to do.? You all have "kicked the tires" so for me, are the most helpful in learning the new platform.

Thanks Bruce. This is a great workaround for me and our group.

No.? As it says in the instructions, send the invitation to [email protected]? No other characters needed.? Yahoo can be very stubborn about giving errors, but it will eventually work.

2. Sent invite to transfer@...
Now waiting.

Re: [email protected] doesn't go through

[email protected] should work. Did for me. It¡¯s legitimate. @.iogroups is nonsense as an email address afaik. I don¡¯t think it¡¯s got a .com equivalent.?

Possibly the notification captured the spelling she entered when accessing the web site to request membership, and the activity log captured the email address that actually responded to the confirmation request that Groups.io sent to her.

I have sent her the GMF wiki link and instructions on both changing her email address and on creating an alias. The group and her member activity logs confirm she has only one GIO account and that she can access our group under the email address she joined under. The problem is confined to her not being able to reply to our group by email which seems to be tracked down to her "forgetting" to add the extra dotin her email address when she applied to join our group m

Sandi; while not denying Shal's extensive knowledge and experience in any way (ditto other Owners/Moderators) the GMF functions by all its subscribers pooling their knowledge and experience and sharing it with others when any query arises. The entire operation would collapse if those with queries only accepted answers from owners and moderators.

You probably didn't intend your post to mean that responses from non - owners/moderators are by definition of lower value, but you came rather close to it.

Re: [email protected] doesn't go through

Oops, I'm sorry. In my skimming I missed that it was referring to yahoo groups and not this one. I will see what my moderating abilities are. I don't know that that is the problem, but who knows.

Re: [email protected] doesn't go through

I am the "owner".

I paid the yearly for premium.

I "invited" and receive this repeatedly:

The following email addresses had errors:

?

Re: [email protected] doesn't go through

I have paid the 220 one shot yearly payment and will deal with that later.

This issue hasn't been dealt with:

  1. Send an invite from your Yahoo Group to [email protected]

I tried that twice but it received an error message both times.

I then tried to "invite" by changing the order of "groups.io" to ".iogroups" which did go through, but I don't know if it is legitimate or not. From [email protected] to [email protected].

I am asking for help in being able to "invite" someone who can work out this transfer as following the steps given isn't working out for me. At least not yet. Maybe it does now as it does here.

Re: Detailed Instructions on How to Conduct a Yahoo Transfer

I have just gone through the transfer process and received the email about 24 hours ago that the transfer was complete.

However, 831 members are listed in the email as not being added due to a "Database" error. I spent the whole day preparing and applying for a Direct Add of those missing members - most annoying. But at least that was something I could fix myself. I then compared the message history between my Yahoogroup and groups.io and there were 394 missing messages, especially for the year 2007 but also other years to a lesser extent. Using PG Offline, i counted the messages actually there in the missing months and can confirm the numbers given in the YahooGroups Message History were accurate, yet in groups.io there were months where there were up to 81 messages missing in groups.io that I could confirm existed in the original YahooGroup and in my archive in PG Offline.?

Does it makes sense to start the transfer process again, just for messages. Would this help filling in the gaps?

?

Just one more point - since you have 1 month of premium, you can direct add all of your members from your Yahoo Group. You would need to get a list of them.?

See this wiki page for the information on that.
