You need to enter the information on the Invite page using plain text only.? From the response you got, it appears that you're including other formatting information, probably html.

I interpret the legalese on the Terms of Service to mean that by sending content to a Groups.io group, you grant Groups.io the right to display that content on that Groups.io group, but you do not grant Groups.io any other intellectual property rights in your content.

Scroll to "User Content Transmitted Through the Service"

As for copyright, things are not simple, but basically, for the most part, the author of any e-mail is automatically the copyright holder of that e-mail's content (unless he writes the e-mail in his capacity as an employee, in which case the employer is the copyright holder, or unless the content is published in the USA, in which case it's even more complicated, because different states have different copyright laws).

You are not actually supposed to forward private posts to people who are not members of your group (unless you have the owner/moderator and all identified parties' permission, of course).

Having a "forward" link or button would imply that it is okay to forward a message from within a group to someone who is outside the group.

If you want to share content from the group with people outside the group, and you don't have the e-mail in your e-mail program, then the only way to share the posts is copy/paste.

If the group's archive is set to "public", you can also send a link to the post or to the topic. Right-click the message number in the top right of the message and select something like "copy link address".

No.
If someone has forgotten his password, he can use the "email me a link" button to log in. At that point he can update his own password.
Also:

Groups.io's password reset feature doesn't involve being sent a password reset link, as on many other web sites.

The only way to reset one's password on Groups.io, is to use the "sendloginlink" feature. Even if you try to reset your password by clicking the "Forgot your password" link, it takes you to the same page, namely:

/sendloginlink

So, if a user struggles with setting a password, and IF YOU HAVE THEIR PERMISSION to help them, simply go to:

/sendloginlink

and fill in their e-mail address, and ask them to forward you the mail that they receive with the subject line "Link to log into Groups.io". Then you can log in as them, change their password, and tell them what their new password is.

The sendloginlink mail looks like this:

----------------------------------------------------------
Hello,
Here is a link to log into your Groups.io account:
/loginlink/2230893240982340985
It will expire in 24 hours, on 11/15/2019 at 5:20pm CAT,
but you'll stay logged in for 30 days, unless and until
you log out.
If you did not ask for a login link to be sent to you,
please ignore this email.
Cheers,
The Groups.io Team

Problem response uploading member addresses

I am having a HUGE problem uploading my group members addresses. The first time I tried, the response said they weren't formatted correctly . I surmised this was because the excel sheet table I submitted had more info than they needed. So,? I followed these instructions groups.io sent me exactly

Each email address should be on its own line. If you have a name with the email address, it can be specified as:

First Lastname <email@...>

Nothing else should be included on the line.

Everything was in a text document in a one-column table. Each line either had:

John Smith <jsmith@...>
or? just
jsmith@...

I? can't even show you the entire response, because it was not approved, claiming I had formatted the addresses incorrectly, which I hadn't, according to their own directions, but it was filled with stuff like this:

The following email addresses had errors:

??????????????0e?r???????????????????s!??: Invalid Email Address

I have no idea how to decipher anything like that. 117 email addresses were processed.Yet none were added. How do I fix this? Is there ANY way I can speak to the people who upload addresses directly? Some of you seem to know who they are.

Please help me.

Have a look at this in the GMF wiki. The main point to note is that giving Set Moderator Privileges to anyone allows them to promote themselves to owner and if they are so minded throw you off your own group.

That said there is always a benefit in having a second owner just in case anything untoward happens...

Re: Strange happenings

She told me the Groups.io page for our group is blank or empty.? What I don't understand?is the message I get from Direct Add shows the address she uses as already being a member but when I search the membership list using that exact address, it does not show up.? I was very careful that I didn't make any typos in my searching.? I'm going to contact her and clarify what she see when she tries to log on.? She should not be getting a blank page but an offer to send her a link.? I'm pretty sure if I contact Mark about this, he is so busy with transfers from Yahoo, he will not have time to get to my mystery for quite a while.

Have a look at "Terms", which are accessible from the bottom of any page on the web UI; copyright is quite extensively covered in them. One area of specific concern to groups.io is where subscribers post material for which they do not hold the copyright, and Mark will be quite ruthless in taking down any group that infringes that rule.

I¡¯ve lost all groups, including several I am owner of

David Kirkby

I had a problem with the email address?drkirkby@...?so messages sent there were bouncing. I changed my email address in groups.io to drkirkby @ gmail.com. That worked okay. I then tried to change the email back to?drkirkby@...,?

but could not log in with either account.?

I am not subscribed to any groups, which is a problem as I am the owner of several of them?

Femm

Plus at least one other group.?

I might also suggest that managing / read / sending to a very busy group is also easier and more efficient if done from the web UI. If nothing else, emails relevant to thread A don't finish up interspersed with those from threads B to X inclusive. I would also expect using a "digest" delivery - while helpful if traffic levels are low - is less than helpful if waiting for an answer about some particular point, and of course replying to a point read in a digest can mean that by the time a member has seen the digest and replied, the discussion may have moved on significantly from whatever is being replied to.

Personal choice aside there are doubtless other reasons why for some using the web UI is not a practicable option, but IMHO it is the easiest and tidiest way of keeping on top of things.

I removed a test address from the shalstest group, and then replied again to a year-old invitation sent from that group. Presto.
I'm not sure what's encoded in that From address (of the Invitation), but clearly it could use a timeout of some kind. Maybe the same two weeks as a Pending member.
I would not want the invitation to expire for members who have not yet accepted the invitation -- not everyone uses their e-mail efficiently (or some people use it too efficiently, not dealing with mails that are not immediately relevant at the time, thus letting the message move up (or down) the message list for weeks or months).

The best solution here is that whenever a user accepts an invitation, Groups.io should check whether that user had been a member on a date that is *later* than the date of the invitation, and if so, then the invitation link doesn't work (or: redirects the user to a page where they can apply to join or login).

I'll post the bug.

Re: Admin/owner change of other member's paswword.

The password is for access to all the groups the user has subscribed to, not just to your group.
Same as Yahoo/Google where the password covers mail and all of the other services on those platforms

Re: Removed member keeps rejoining, even though group is restricted

Samuel,

Thanks, but: the image that I had attached to the original mail is the
entire activity log for this user's e-mail address.
Ah, sorry. I missed that there was an attached image on that message.

Perhaps someone here can test this form me: invite me (or a dummy
account) to your group, let me join, then remove me, so that we can
see if I can join again using that same invitation.
Wow. That's quite the loophole. Or feels like it. It feels like one shouldn't have to put on a ban just to guard against the re-use of a stale invitation.

I removed a test address from the shalstest group, and then replied again to a year-old invitation sent from that group. Presto.

I'm not sure what's encoded in that From address (of the Invitation), but clearly it could use a timeout of some kind. Maybe the same two weeks as a Pending member.

I suggest sending your screen shot (unredacted) to [email protected] along with the confirmation that an old invitation can be re-used a year or more later, even after removing the member.

Re: To those who are new to Groups io

b&p,

... but have been overwhelmed with messages - about 125 a day, ...
In addition to the option to go to Digest or Summary for now, I'll also recommend having a look on your Subscription page for GMF, in the Advanced Preferences section (an expander).

Selecting "Following Only", "First Message Also", and "Auto Follow Replies" together gives you a good way to keep up with the Topics that are being discussed, without being buried under all the replies to the topics.

If you find a given Topic to be of interest, click the "Follow Topic" link that will be in the footer of the message. Then you will receive all the replies to that Topic.

Of course, this works best when other members choose good Subject lines for their new topics. ("Help" being the canonical example of a bad Subject line - it doesn't tell anyone anything about what you need help with). It also works best when topics don't drift off-topic.

Neither of those ideals are fully realized (at least, not in any help group I've ever been in), but setting a good example always helps - my thanks to those that do.

So there's another approach to managing GMF's current tendency to flood your inbox. Or any other busy group.
