No, you've done the hard part.? Go to your GIO group, click on Admin on the left menu, then on Upgrade slightly indented under that.? At the upper right, there will be a blue button to View/Change Plan.? That button will take you to the page where you should select Premium Yearly (second on the list) using the Upgrade button to the right.? Once you complete that, just follow the instructions, /g/GroupManagersForum/message/23597

You CANNOT download a usable membership list, however. You'll need to tell the members on the Yahoo group to join your new group.?

You can download a membership list if it is less than 1,000
With PG4 you can get a complete membership list which can be uploaded to GIO
Of course GIO account should be a premium account

J -- With metrics like that, I believe you should thank your lucky stars!

I've looked up the message numbers and they are present on Yahoo still. I believe it's possible to retransfer just the messages.
The message numbers do not map 1:1, largely because some messages in the Y!G were probably deleted long before you ever asked for a transfer. Did you actually read the messages left behind in the Yahoo Group and confirm that they are not present in the transferred data??

Another source of missing messages can occur if you allow posts to continue in your Yahoo Group after the transfer agent has already completed the scraping. (A quaint term -- never heard of that before)

Queries:

Is it necessary to delete the entire message file on Groups.io?
Yes, unless you're willing to meticulously go through every message and delete 70,000 dupes. Deleting all those messages will itself be rather burdensome, to put it mildly. Please consider that a repeat transfer could run into even more Yahoo glitches and leave you with a worse situation than you already have.

What happens to the messages received by Groups.io in the interim between group startup and the new transfer?
They are retained, and these are the ones with low message numbers.

At the moment, those messages seem to be assigned a new number series series, starting at #1.
Message numbers are assigned in sequence by groups.io as they arrive, whether by new posts or via the transfer agent.

After? the rescraping and reload, would the #1 to #5 be lost?
If you don't delete them first, they will be retained, along with every other message currently in your message archive.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

You might be able to contact the family of the group owner for assistance.? It would be awkward, but they might be able give you the login information for his/her account on YG.

Detailed Instructions on How to Conduct a Yahoo Transfer

Folks -- I haven't posted this in 8 days so I'm probably overdue to do so again. My apologies for the inevitable dupes in your email inbox.

Appended below please find detailed instructions on how to conduct a transfer using the Easy Group Transfer method.

Other resources:
To check status of an ongoing transfer:??/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19948
Overview and instructions WITH SCREENSHOTS:?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups

Please note that the way you select an existing transfer for further processing has changed. It used to be a pull-down menu, it is now a list of links.

Regards,
Bruce

Here is the process. It is not fully automated and will take several days.?Do not do anything out of order.

The following instructions are for a full-width desktop/laptop display. This can all be done on mobile too, but it's a lot easier if you don't.

0.1 Go here:?/
0.2 At the bottom of the page, you'll find a link that says "Easy Group Transfer." Click it.
0.3 Scroll to the bottom of the subsequent page and click on the big blue button labelled "Yahoo Group Instructions."
0.4 You should be at?/yahootransfer. Read the instructions carefully, including all the Notes. Bookmark this page, too. You will come back here several times.

1.1 Create your groups.io group and configure it according to your needs. Help with group settings can be found here:??/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Quick-Start-for-Group-Formation?(Note: Each new group must be reviewed to confirm that it meets the?Groups.io Terms of Service. This alone could take up to a day.)
1.2 To use the Easy Group Transfer,?you must upgrade the group to the?Premium Yearly?plan.?You can downgrade to the Basic plan later (i.e.: a year from now), if you want.
To do so, select Admin>Upgrade from the left-side menu bar and click on the blue "View/Change Plan" button. Select "Premium Yearly" (one-time cost of?$220) and make your payment.?
(You have now completed Step 1 of the instructions)

2.1 Return to the bookmarked page (/yahootransfer). Click on the big green button at the bottom that says "Set Up New Transfer."
2.2 Enter the name of your Yahoo group and the name of your groups.io group in their respective boxes. The groups.io group is conveniently selected from a pick-list of those groups that you own. Do NOT enter any domain information (i.e.:?leave off[email protected] or @yahoogroups.co.uk),?just the group name.
2.3 Click the big green "Start Group Transfer Process" button at the bottom of the page.?
(You have now completed Step 2 of the instructions)

3.1 Go to your YAHOO GROUP (not your groups.io group) and log in. Send a membership invitation to "[email protected]". If you've never done this before, instructions can be found at??
3.2 Return to the bookmarked page?(/yahootransfer) once again. Select the group you are transferring from the Existing Transfers at bottom right (click on its link). A new page will come up, with?a status box at the top. If all is well, it?should?say: "We've received the invite to your group and will accept it soon. There is no need to send another invite."?If it?doesn't?say that, the invitation did not go through. Go back to Step 3.1 above and try again.?
(You have now completed Step 3 of the instructions)

4.1 BE PATIENT. Accepting the invitation is often?the longest step in the process, and requires human intervention (solving a CAPTCHA).?
4.2 BE EVEN MORE PATIENT.?Do?not?send additional invitations in an attempt to hurry things up.
4.3 You will eventually?receive an email from groups.io stating?that the Yahoo group invitation has been accepted, and providing you with further instructions.?Continue waiting until you receive this email.
(You have now completed Step 4 of the instructions)

5.1 Return to your YAHOO GROUP and log in. Find the "[email protected]" member record (sorting by join date is the easiest way) and promote it to a Moderator. Instructions for this can be found at?.
5.2 Return to the groups.io page that you bookmarked in #0.4 above one more time. Once again, go to the "Existing Transfers" at bottom right and select the group you're ready to transfer. On the resulting page, click the green "Give Go Ahead to Transfer" button.?
(You have now completed Step 5 of the instructions)

6.1 BE PATIENT AGAIN. The ability to actually do the transfer depends on how well Yahoo's servers are operating. We all know what that means, right??(If you want to check status, see?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19948).
6.2 You may notice some activity in your new groups.io group, which probably reflects partial completion of the process.?Do not panic.?This is what you wanted to happen!
6.3 When the transfer is done, you will receive an email from groups.io summarizing what it was able to transfer. It will also list whatever things it was?NOT?able to transfer.?Until this email is received, you aren't done yet.
6.4 Rejoice.

Most of us have "been there" with this process before and it all sounds easy in hindsight. Ironically, the same thing that's causing most people to abandon Y!G (server downtime) is exactly the same thing most likely to get in the way of completing the transfer process.?The best time to initiate a transfer is when Yahoo is performing well.?If you procrastinate until things are crashing and burning, delays, incomplete transfers, and other such frustrations can be expected.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: Checking transfer status of group I co-own

I am in a relatively similar situation, except I initiated the xfer (about 3 weeks ago). I have not received any response, and have no idea of status. '[email protected]" has not accepted the invitation to my two Yahoo groups which I am trying to migrate and I am getting quite nervous. Slightly irksome as I paid for the premium membership on these two accounts to allow for the migration.

All suggestions should be posted on the beta group.? You'd need to look over there to see if it's already been suggested, then reply to that message or post it yourself.? However, that has been put on hold until the YG migration is complete.? The beta group is on moderation and no suggestions will be approved until a later date.

Forgot to mention that you can export the messages to a pg4 file, and upload that file to a groups.io group, and you can read the messages in it in PGO4, or with an SQLite program.?https://sqlitestudio.pl/index.rvt should get you what you need for that.?

Full disclosure, I bought PGO4 when I moved my Metal-Shapers-and-Planers group over here from Yahoo when they started to get seriously dysfunctional. Wilson happed to be a member of my group, and it's come in very handy several times now. He's very responsive to inquiries, though he's in the UK so not on the usual schedule for folks who live in the US. .?

The problem is what to do with the message archive once downloaded; as there is really no good way to re-upload it to groups.io, to re-link individual messages to their owners, or to provide online message search capability. ?It's not the same as a transfer and loses "ownership", but Lena has a way to get the messages into the archive,?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/22251?

One possibility was to use the PG OFFLINE feature to convert messages to HTML. My third-choice solution was to do as follows. It's fairly simple if you can write raw HTML.
  1. Export the PG Offline messages into a series of HTML pages of 50 messages each.
  2. Create a top page with links to all the other pages and embeds "Google Custom Search" which enables search of this page and all the other pages.
  3. Using PHP, create a "wrapper" for the pages using server-side includes that has links back to the top page, to the previous page, and to the next page, and also embeds Google Custom Search.
  4. Put all this on a server someplace. It could even be Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.
  5. Make sure the attachments and files are loaded into directories on the server that match the links in the messages. Use awk or sed if necessary to edit all the message files to change the links with one command if necessary.
This means that your Yahoo messages are in an archive, distinct from the ongoing messages. I wanted all the messages in a single, searchable place which is why this solution ranked third on my list of choices.

Definitely want this.

I know it's been some time, but if you get this, could you share a link to the other place if we can vote on the feature?

You can upload the files and photos from the Yahoo group via the files and photos pages in groups.io groups. In photos, you also have to create individual folders manually, but once you have the folders, you can upload multiple photos through the upload dialog button. Files will upload an entire directory. If you have mixed files and photos in the Files directory, you'll need to set the new files page to allow photos in the files page. Been doing it for some groups I belong to that had no moderator or owner.?

You CANNOT download a usable membership list, however. You'll need to tell the members on the Yahoo group to join your new groups.io group.?

Not the Yahoo files section, I hope! That's going away. You need to put them someplace like Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or similar.

By the way, for Andrea's benefit, this is what the PGO HTML (web page) looks like:

What I had proposed in a prior post was to add a Search box and links at the top for previous page, next page, and home page. Clicking each message number opens the link in your web browser.
