As Bruce mentioned, it's not, but it's much easier to see them now that they're a different color.? All badges used to be the same blue.

Obviously not directly related, but even free groups can do Direct Add to subgroups from the main group.

Re: Which size plan?

David,

Is there any way to find out how much disk space is being used in a Yahoo group now?

The Files usage is shown at the bottom of the page. Despite the "infinite scroll", there is a bottom!

For the Photos & Attachments usage (total) they got wiser, it is shown at the top of the Albums tab:

That's the sum of Photos and Attachments, which share the 100 GB allocation.
Ok, thank you. One of my groups has 463MB of attachments, so should fit into the free category after the first year.

Does the groups.io transfer take attachments across as well as files and photos?

Whether that degree of "personal touch" would be applied during these high-stress times I don't know, but it is possible - after Stage 2 there's not as much need to panic. The photos would have been exported from Yahoo at whatever resolution Yahoo was holding.
Just would not want it to stop the transfer half-done when it ran out of disk space.

David

Export and import group settings?

Hello

I have one group that is nicely set up. I'd like to create another group with mostly the same setup settings, but I'm not looking forward to setting everything all over again (not to mention making sure that the settings are indeed the same as the previous group's).

Is there a way to clone the existing group (obviously without its members, files, etc.), or to export some or all of its settings so that I can import those settings into the new group when I create it?

Thanks
Samuel

You should. What does the status say at the top of the page (red box)?

Re: subgroups and members of the main group becoming membes of it

Donald,

Short answer, no. See my question earlier (/g/GroupManagersForum/message/22767) and Shal Farley's response (thank you Shal). Similar problem. I think in practice it's mostly getting the members used to the idea of subgroups. For the most part, as they'll be able to see all messages from all groups in one place it's not wildly different to Y!, and for the email-only users possibly it's even less so. If you're planning to use the Easy Transfer make sure your destination for the Y! messages is the subgroup, they can't be moved afterwards. And if you are, you'll have a Premium subscription so you'll be able to 'Direct Add' members to the subgroup(s) after the transfer, which doesn't take too long unless you have a *huge* membership list of course :-)

One thing you may have an issue with is members replying to existing or posting new topics in your 'old messages' subgroup. You may want to think about locking the subgroup (making it an 'Announcements' group seems to do that nicely) so that members can only post to the main group. That may take a little explaining, you probably want to have some boilerplate messages you can send to your more challenged members!

Good luck

Derek.

Re: Trouble logging in on android phone

Dotty,

For what it's worth; I'm typing this reply on my Android phone (Samsung S7) through the Chrome browser. I've also checked using the Samsung browser and no problem there either. This suggests it's something in the phone or browser sessions tripping up.

One thing to check; how old is her 'phone? If it's sufficiently old it could be that the browser is missing some important functionality. Phone companies want you to keep buying new phones of course, so often stop providing code updates for even quite recent phones.

Another thing to try, if possible; does she have logins to other websites and do these work? Sites have fairly similar strategies/techniques for managing logins, so if it's something on her phone it may 'break' other sites as well.

I don't usually have cookies disabled, but what I *do* do for sites I don't trust is to run an 'Incognito'? mode tab/window in Chrome. This is a convenient way of making sure that cookies, browsing history etc. are removed automatically when the tab is closed without throwing away the benefits of properly used cookies. Cookies in and of themselves are not bad, it's just that there are bad players out there who will use them right up to the limits and beyond of what is socially acceptable.?

Hope this helps

Derek

Hi David,

I have used PG Offline to download all the group content.

This makes sense anyway to have a backup.

After doing so you can check the folders if everything is there.

You can then also check the size of the pictures, files and so on.

Re: Help with transfer - HELP!!!!!!!!

Dennis,

Sandra--that's where I am, too, with one of my groups. I have sent
NUMEROUS invitations to the new group.io, ...
What Barbara said.

My additional advice:

Stay Calm
Don't Panic
Just Read The Instructions

If you've invited [email protected] before clicking the green "Start Group Transfer Process" button those invitations will be discarded. See the screenshot in Step 1, here:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Transfer-from-Yahoo-Groups

In particular, your transfer status page must show the text box "Make sure you have sent an invite..."

Then just follow the rest of the steps, carefully and in order, and you're likely to succeed. Skip steps or do them out of order and you're likely to get stuck.

Re: Refund

I hope you're right about the ease of a refund. I have
my doubts. When I previously contacted support about
something I got a canned response that they were too
busy to respond to requests.
Dennis
You will get your money back. May be it may take a few
days.
Dennis -
It's important to understand the volume of work happening right now on the groups.io site. Mark Fletcher moderated the beta group yesterday because he simply didn't have time for the distraction. The volume of data being handled by Mark and the groups.io team is amazing. Yesterday (Nov 6) alone they uploaded to groups.io over 3.4 MILLION messages. Keep in mind that messages and files being downloaded from Yahoo is separate and in ADDITION to all that. Add to that the number of new members joining groups.io every day which is unprecedented as well. Someone posted some statistics about that (which I can't find right now), and the raw volume of data moving around is almost impossible to truly comprehend. Perhaps this will help you understand why your refund might be a little delayed.

Those of us who have been on the groups.io system and worked with Mark know that he is an incredibly fair and honest person. He's not going to keep your money. But he IS very busy trying to help save millions of other people's information before those folks at Yahoo (who gave you so much notice) wipe it all out.

I would also point out that before you decide that all your information is lost, consider that downloading data from Yahoo is only running about a day from transfer approval to download. If you've given the go ahead for your group to move, the chances are very good that the data has already been copied. (Of course presuming that Yahoo hasn't found ways to mess up the process. I've been locked out of a group I'm trying to rescue manually for a couple days now.) The big delay is weaving the data together again and posting it to groups.io. But you can certainly demand a refund and Mark can just forget about any data he has already downloaded for you. We can't stop people from making poor choices.

The invite has to be made to the yahoo group, not the new io group.
You need to be able to invite new members to the yahoo group and make them moderator.

What happens if a group is transferred and it needs more space than signed up for?
?
In much quieter times, the Transfer agent put my transfer on hold after the export (in what is now known as Stage 3, though I don't think there was an explicit queue back then) and sent me an email suggesting that I change my group's Max Size In Photos Section setting to reduce the resolution of the files (and hence the storage requirement). I selected 1024x1024 and that brought the size from 4.7 GB to about 0.5 GB - turns out that many members' snapshots were straight out of their high Megapixel cameras, taking a lot of storage unnecessarily.

Whether that degree of "personal touch" would be applied during these high-stress times I don't know, but it is possible - after Stage 2 there's not as much need to panic. The photos would have been exported from Yahoo at whatever resolution Yahoo was holding.

Re: Trouble logging in on android phone

Dotty,

I hope someone who uses an android phone can offer advice so that I
can help my members.
I've had no problems using the Email a link method on my Android phone. But it has been a while since I've needed to do that.

I'm using a purely stock Pixel 1 on Google Fi - meaning that my email app is the Gmail app, which has a variant of Chrome as the built-in (to the Gmail app) browser that I'm taken to.

Possibly with a different email app or default browser you'd have less luck having links in email open the appropriate web page. Does her phone follow other kinds of links delivered in email messages? It may be something she needs to set up. Some carriers replace some of the stock Android apps with their own branded apps.

On the Log In page, she entered her proper email address and password
and clicked on Log In button. She was not taken to G.io. ... (If I
recall correctly, in both cases she just remained on either the log in
or email message page.)
That's mysterious. I'd expect a browser to work correctly, as there's not a question of handing off from one app to another.

The first member did mention that she might have cookies disabled on
her phone, but I didn't think that would prevent a log in (just meant
she would have to log in each time she wanted to access the group.)
I suppose it might, depending on exactly how vigorous the phone is about rejecting cookies. Automatically deleting them at the end of a session is ok, but I believe you have to have one for the duration of your session. If the browser/phone blocks the attempt to set the cookie in the first place then that could cause the redirection from the Log In page to fail.

Which size plan?

I have a Yahoo group that I want to get transferred to groups.io. There are various options here providing different amounts of disk space, and I am not sure which one I need.

Is there any way to find out how much disk space is being used in a Yahoo group now? What happens if a group is transferred and it needs more space than signed up for?
