Growing my group

Fabien

Hello everyone,
I have my own group on groups.io, and I¡¯m trying to grow it, so more people will join. What are some ideas that I can do this? If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, feel free to reply.
Blessings,
Fabien

Only Daylight Time? #timezone

When setting up my new account the timezones don't include DT and ST options. For example, Eastern (US) Time only lists EDT, but EDT ended several days ago. For repeating events or for events created on one side the DT/ST switch that occur on the other side, this can cause problem.

So I can use CDT, but then when we actually go back to DT, I'll have to change to EDT.?

I've never seen a time zone list that doesn't take care of DT and ST.

Re: Files in transfer are assigned to what members?

Ah gotcha.? She was the initial owner of the groups.io (started it), but I initiated the transfer, so that would make sense that they were assigned to her.? The members who uploaded those files are most likely not members anymore as we have a somewhat fluid membership.? ??

The transfer also seemed to indicate 150 files, but they aren't in the files section.? It looks like they are actually emails that are somehow saved as *.eml files within messages.? I assume those files are still readable in some way?

Is there any way to edit the timestamp on messages that were transferred over?? There are two messages that are somehow time stamped in 1999 (which is 2 years before our Yahoo Group started), but reading the content tells me it should be sometime in 2004.

For any files or photos where the original posting member didn't get transferred, ownership should be assigned automatically to the person that handled the transfer (or possibly the group owner?).? Photos can be reassigned to another member with some work, but not files.

There is no add attachment tool when editing a message.

Files in transfer are assigned to what members?

Hi everyone.

Our transfer over from Yahoo Groups just finished!? Super excited, but I had a question.? We had a small number of files and photos transfer over (<200).? They mostly seem to be assigned to one of our moderators even though she didn't upload them and some even predate her joining the original Yahoo group.? It's not that big a deal to us, many of these files aren't relevant anymore and we will probably be cleaning a lot out.? But I was curious as to why this happened. Has anyone else encountered this?

Thanks!
Linda??

Re: Growing a group #promotion

If your group is in the directory of publicly listed groups, check how much of your homepage description shows up in the directory. Make sure you have good keywords. Google retrieves the links to the group.

Re: how do add attachment to old messages #messages

I just looked at very early messages in my travel group - it had been transferred from Yahoo several years ago. No toolbar.
You can edit the message - open a message and use the hamburger menu to get a few options including Edit Message.

However there is an associated URL for each - the number in the top right. Could you rig something up by putting something in Files or Databases with a link to the right post?

Re: How can I keep messages from hiding email address information after @

There is a setting: Admin->Settings->Settings Tab->Privacy Section->Hide Email Addresses in Archives
which can be set to ¡°Do not mask email addresses in the archives.¡± or ¡°Mask all email addresses in the web archives.¡±

When it is set to the ¡°Mask¡± setting, when viewing the messages in the archive the messages show up like your example. When it is set to ¡°Do not mask¡±,
addresses show unmodified.

However, the setting does not affect how the message is sent out in email messages. It only affects how things look in the Archives, ie. when you look at the email messages on the groups.io website (at /g/yourgroup/messages or )

I¡¯m not aware of a setting that enables/disables the displaying of email addresses in the actual emails sent to members from your group.

Re: Yahoo Group Import Question

I recall Mark commenting how PGO is going to do it. Surely the process is not going to be very easy. Mark has invested in GIO heavily and he is not going to idly watch all the work go down the tube. Looks like after Dec 14, the future financial sustainability of GIO is going to be based on subscription. All the back end operation costs a lot of money and it cannot be sustained without sufficient income.

The existing transfer process at least involves some semblance of consent from someone in a position of authority in the originating group. If anyone with an email address and this software can subscribe?for a day and immediately clone a group here in , this raises issues both ethical and legal. In fact, it bears a strong resemblance to DVD or software pirating.

As someone fully vested in the future of this platform, I do not want to see ?get embroiled in some sort of court battle regarding group/content ownership. To the casual observer, that may seem unlikely -- but it only has to happen once. And if it does, we will ALL be affected.

Re: Yahoo Group Import Question

I am an owner of several YG and am also blocked from promoting new or existing members to moderators????

On 11/5/2019 4:06 PM, Bruce Bowman wrote:

That's unfortunate, but let's be totally honest...if you're neither the Owner nor have his cooperation, then this Yahoo group is simply not yours to transfer.?

There is nothing keeping you from creating a parallel group and inviting people over, or even uploading the content. You just won't be able to use the Easy Group Transfer process to do it.

Bruce

Re: Member Switchover Timing

Awwww! I assumed the owners date would have been preserved, since we had to create the group.

Thanks for the info - had I known what to ask on October 18¡¡

When I migrated my Yahoo group over, I did not allow new members to join the new group. When the migration finished, I received a summary email explaining how many messages, files, photos, members were transferred, including a list of members that were not transferred. There was only one address not transferred, mine, because it was already subscribed.

All the join dates of the members were preserved, but mine was not. It¡¯s a tiny bit of nostalgia lost, but not too bad.

If I were to do it over, I would have used a separate email address as the owner of the groups.io group, let all the members transfer in, then merged my new account into my old account to retain my join date.

Re: Question about paying for premium

I used my credit card (not Pay Pal) to pay for both Premium and the priority fee. ?Never went through Stripe.

I read, but can't find at the moment, that there's already a limit sending messages to GIO.? I believe it's 40 within a certain time and don't know what the timeout is before you can send more.? Can you imagine trying to inject 100,000 messages at 40 per hour (or whatever the limit is)?? Having said that, this doesn't sound like a good idea, even if it can be done.

Edit:? Okay, found it.? It's 40 messages per 30 minutes, https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/8326

Spica Speakers Group

okay to be "honest" the owner made me a moderator 6+ years ago and has since disappeared. All attempts to reach him have thus far failed.?

I am and have been the only person over the group and am trying my best to keep it a float.

Re: Question about paying for premium

You must pay before you request a transfer from YahooGroups. There are free basic groups.

You asked about using a debit card.
Email [email protected]?to see if they will accept another payment option. Perhaps through the method they are using for groups to get donations - Stripe, I believe??
