Re: Transfer of files Qu from yahoo
Sarah,
One files contains a large number of headings and under each heading,I would guess that the file itself will transfer ok. However the links in it would not be automatically updated - they would continue to point to the Yahoo Group's archive. Moreover, I don't think that the transfer process guarantees that messages get the same number in the Groups.io group that they had in the Yahoo Group. So manual or programmatic updating of the links might not be a simple substitution of one link format for another. I can send details of the list and the file section if it helps. You may, if you don't mind that information posted publicly (GMF's archives are open to the public). Some of GMF's otehr members may have experience to relate about transferring groups with lots of files or large files. I myself haven't done that. Another resource would be [email protected] - to get details on authority. Shal |
Transfer of files Qu from yahoo
I'm very interested in groups.io which I just found out about. I help run a well-established, active yahoo group. We have a lot of information in the files section (and also in 'bookmarks'). My particular question is whether all this data gets transferred and in particular the following; One files contains a large number of headings and under each heading, thanks to a specially designed program we use, a lot of highlighted numbers of past messages in the archives which, when tapped, automatically takes the reader to those past messages. Will this file with all its huge volume of data be transferred?? If this is not possible, if it is saved, can it be downloaded into the new group with the links still working and continue to be updated? Thank you for any assistance! I can send details of the list and the file section if it helps. Sarah |

Scott,
I wrote: So, I can imagine a few factors that may be relevant:I was thinking, and it isn't the raw bits-per-second rate that likely matters. Rather the round-trip time for a message to sent from your browser to the site, the site to process it, and the response to come back to your browser. This unfortunately is seldom measured or revealed. And can be hard to measure because it is usually even more variable than the effective bit rate. DSLReports includes a "bufferbloat" measurement, which is a measure of how badly your average trip-time is impacted by streaming data. Often the answer is: severely. The also have a ping test which is a direct measurement of latency in your data connections: The quality of your internet service matters, of course, but another factor, often overlooked, is the age and quality of your home router. Not too long ago I replaced an aging DSL-class router with one geared for higher transaction performance - it made a world of difference on a bunch of sites, particularly modern sites that tend to cram a lot of stuff onto each page. I don't think Groups.io's pages are overstuffed (far from it) but the HTML editor could be particularly sensitive to transaction latency (round-trip time) if it is communicating with Groups.io's server on every keystroke. Groups.io site updates
#changelog
Hi all,
This week's change log: Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change. * Work on upgrading search to new software and new indices. I'm in a state of high anticipation. I'd love to see a really good search/filter capability for all areas, but especially messages. One of the annoying issues with the current search feature is that you can't turn off the word root matching when you know the exact word or phrase you want to find. If it would even prioritize (list first) the exact matches it would be better I'm also in a state of dread, because I've seen so many poor search features. A million ways to do it poorly. * Allowing CSS font-family declarations in archive messages. This fixed a bug I'd noticed: font selections made while composing a message were shown in the resulting email, but not when viewing the message in the group's messages page. Comments about these others are also welcome: * INTERNAL: Work on the API. * SYSADMIN: Updated Elasticsearch nodes. * BUGFIX: Replies in groups with a subdomain from the All Threads view were broken. * CHANGE: Changed all split dropdowns to 'normal' dropdowns. * INTERNAL: Doing commits more often in the cleaner cronjob to avoid shared memory issues with the database. Please call out any you find significant. Shal |
Re: Is there any way that a group member can hide their email address but not their name when posting?
John,
... a moderator asked me if there is any way that a group member canThere is not. While their email addresses won't be shown on the Groups.io site, their address will be in the From: address of their postings when forwarded to members that receive group messages by email. The best the member can do is create or use an anonymous email address for use in the group. That is, go to a free email service (aol, gmail, hotmail, etc.) and create an email address that does not identify them. They can put a filter in the anonymous account to forward to their preferred email address, but this is still inconvenient because it means that they always have to sign in to that anonymous email, or to groups.io, to post or reply. I believe I can make the member directory only visible to owners &Correct. There was considerable discussion, some time ago, in the beta@ group about having anonymous groups - where no member's address would be seen or forwarded to any other member (only moderators would see them in the Members list). The idea was controversial and hasn't been acted on. I haven't seen anything about them this year. It is on the to-do list though: Shal |
Is there any way that a group member can hide their email address but not their name when posting?
![]() I just got through migrating my 3rd Yahoo Group to Group.io and a moderator asked me if there is?any way that a group member can hide his email address but not his name when posting?? This moderator used to manually send out lots of email to a bunch of people outside a Yahoo Group that didn't want their email addresses seen/known by others.? The software to do this was costing her $200 a year and now she can no longer afford it and she no longer wants to spend the time doing what she did. So is there a way that a member can hide their email address from other members of the group when posting but not their name?? I believe I can make the member directory only visible to owners & Moderators but these folks didn't want their email addresses visible when they post. I'm getting ready to send out invitations to these folks to join the group and would like to tell them if this is possible or not. Thank you, John ?

Re: Anyone experiencing Lag while make a post?
Scott,
which other places did you want me to try? I thoughtI was curious to see if you switched your post format preference to plain text if the problem would go away. In plain text mode a simple form filler is used rather than the new HTML editor. Switch your Post Preference by going to your account preferences page (click on your name in the upper right to drop a menu, click on Account, click on Preferences in the left column). About midway down is a selector for your Post Preference - choose Plain Text then click the Update Preferences button at the bottom. Make some tests with longer texts (Click the Discard button rather than Send if you don't want to clutter a group with the tests). Enough to be confident whether or not you're seeing the slowdown. Then, if you prefer, go back to your Post Preference and return your Post Preference to HTML. There has to be some issue with the new editor. That seems to be the case, even though I'm not experiencing the slowdown. I'm hoping we can gather enough evidence to help Mark identify and hopefully correct the circumstances that result in a slowdown. Noticed something new while typing this post. - as it is a longerThat's the kind of buffering delay that used to happen in "ancient" times, working with old Intel 386 and 486 computers, with dialup modem connections. Not something anyone wants to go back to! So, I can imagine a few factors that may be relevant: Connection performance (I have a 300 MBPS cable connection) Choice of browser (I'm using Firefox) Choice of OS (I'm using either WinXP or Win10) Speed/memory performance of computer (I'm using either a decade-old AMD Opteron at 2.8 GHz with 3 GB of RAM, or a recent Intel i5-6400 at 2.7 GHz and 8 GB of RAM). Of those, my guess is that internet connection performance is the most likely factor to make a difference, with choice of browser being a close second. Since I don't see any difference using an older (high-end at the time) or modern (economy model) computer, I'm guessing that's the least likely factor. I think the evidence is close to solid enough that I'd advise reporting your results to [email protected] to get it on the bug list. Include the factors above, and anything else you think might be relevant. Shal |

I was testing this site out to see if we should move from Yahoo. Nothing buggy at all and I was so impressed we started switching over immediately. Re: How can I enable the "Add Pictures" icon??
#howtoguide
Nick,
How can I enable the "Add Pictures" icon??Disallowing attachments also disallows pictures. This is probably done because the New Topic and Reply editors add pictures as attachments to the message. The image that appears in the message body is an HTML reference to the attached image file. There's growing acceptance of another way to carry image data in email messages, one that puts the data inside the HTML of the message rather than carried as a separate part. That might be a feature request for the beta@ list. Many email user interfaces have traditionally used the "cid:" (attached image file) method of inserting images in formatted message bodies. Thunderbird has only recently changed to using the "data:" method (inside the HTML img tag) by default. Shal |
Re: Anyone experiencing Lag while make a post?
Scott,
There doesn't seem to be any lag typing in the search box.Can you try some of the other places I named? Out of curiosity, when did the new editor come into play?It was put into the New Topic & Reply message editing on May 22nd. It gradually replaced the old editor everywhere else but the wiki, by May 26th. It went into the Wiki the week ending June 2nd. Lag didn't start on this reply until the 3rd sentence.I guess that will make testing for it a bit tedious. Not knowing at what point it might kick in means you'd have to type extra long. Shal |

Yes, I at times have approved 2 messages and the first one will post right away and the second one will take about another 5-10 minutes to post. On 7 June 2017 at 23:02, manowarplayer <scomar@...> wrote: On Tue, Jun 6, 2017 at 09:41 pm, J_Catlady wrote: |

Thank you, everyone who answered to this effect:
The detail about how to approve shows up after the partial message quote so if she received a very long message she might not see the instruction text.- The instructions were right in front of me -- I just did not scroll down far enough to reach the other side of a wide white space which I had assumed was the bottom margin. Thanks for your patience - future as well as past, as I don't doubt I shall have lots more questions - and likely overlook lots of other obvious answers. -Shal, thank you also for your info on G.io's help set up. jkm (aka Jane) |

If one looks far enough down, one will find it. Maybe a better way to do it would be to put the details up top, with the included message below. It's kind of like bottom posting: it's more logical, but easier to miss after a long quote. -- Jim Poston@... << Use only as directed. >> |
Re: Moderating messages by email and other elementary instruction
Jane,
I just received an email notice of a message awaiting approval. CanYes, reply to it. G.io's email notification contained no instructions whatsoever. That's odd. Mine do, right below the instructions for handling the message via web. From my notice for your message: To approve or reject this message using the web, please visit:Maybe you missed them because they are below a quote of the message body? Otherwise maybe there's a glitch of some kind. If they really aren't there you might want to forward an example to [email protected] to get it looked into. I am sending this to both Help and GroupModerators as I don't knowI consider GMF primarily for group moderators, but open and friendly to anyone, with or without moderator status or the intent to become one. Although I also moderate at Group_Help, please don't think I'm speaking for its owner. Myself, I think of it as the "generic" help group for Groups.io users. The original Yahoo lists (Mark's handiwork?), ...In part. Particularly the email part. For more detail see: I guessing that G.io has not (yet) felt the need for suchMark has been working on it, but more in the wordsmithing of the site pages and controls themselves than (until lately) in the Help pages themselves. In this he's been helped along by some very active members of the beta@ group - suggesting both features and their names and descriptions. Mark is currently engaged in some enhancement to the (still rather bare-bones) help page. Some sections have been updated, more are in the works. He's invited us to help him along, see GMF's wiki page mock-up of the help page: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Groups.io-Help-page-Mock-up I also want GMF's wiki to be a good resource for the how-to, tips and tricks, and other information that goes beyond what fits comfortably in official help and support pages. There's clearly going to be some overlap there, but that's ok. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Shal GMF Owner |
Moderating messages by email and other elementary instruction
jkm
I just received an email notice of a message awaiting approval. Can I approve moderated messages by email and if so how? Unlike YG's email notices (which state that you can approve them either by hitting REPLY or via the web), G.io's email notification contained no instructions whatsoever. Because the moderated email was urgent and I wanted to take no chances, I went to the web, but at that particular moment replying by email would have been far, far, far more convenient. :-). Would G.io consider following Yahoo's example of including simple instructions in the email?]
I am sending this to both Help and GroupModerators as I don't know which is more appropriate. What a shame that Y ran Groups into the ground. The original Yahoo lists (Mark's handiwork?), which I switched to in the late '90s, were like bare bones Model Ts, with no frills but all the necessities, and supported by such superb canned help and instructions that even the most computer illiterate newbie, like myself, could get in and drive successfully. I guessing that G.io has not (yet) felt the need for such encyclopedic elementary instruction because most of its groups are still manned by very tecchi-proficient folks. But I'm also guessing that that could quickly change as more and more non-tecchi refugees, like myself, flock to you from Yahoo. Jane |
