There is not.

While their email addresses won't be shown on the Groups.io site, their address will be in the From: address of their postings when forwarded to members that receive group messages by email.

The best the member can do is create or use an anonymous email address for use in the group.

That is, go to a free email service (aol, gmail, hotmail, etc.) and create an email address that does not identify them. They can put a filter in the anonymous account to forward to their preferred email address, but this is still inconvenient because it means that they always have to sign in to that anonymous email, or to groups.io, to post or reply.

Correct.

There was considerable discussion, some time ago, in the beta@ group about having anonymous groups - where no member's address would be seen or forwarded to any other member (only moderators would see them in the Members list).


The idea was controversial and hasn't been acted on. I haven't seen anything about them this year. It is on the to-do list though:

I was curious to see if you switched your post format preference to plain text if the problem would go away. In plain text mode a simple form filler is used rather than the new HTML editor.

Switch your Post Preference by going to your account preferences page (click on your name in the upper right to drop a menu, click on Account, click on Preferences in the left column). About midway down is a selector for your Post Preference - choose Plain Text then click the Update Preferences button at the bottom.

Make some tests with longer texts (Click the Discard button rather than Send if you don't want to clutter a group with the tests). Enough to be confident whether or not you're seeing the slowdown.

Then, if you prefer, go back to your Post Preference and return your Post Preference to HTML.

There has to be some issue with the new editor.

That seems to be the case, even though I'm not experiencing the slowdown. I'm hoping we can gather enough evidence to help Mark identify and hopefully correct the circumstances that result in a slowdown.

Noticed something new while typing this post. - as it is a longer
post than I've made in here, after it got to be 3-4 sentences long
the text stopped appearing at all.. I kept typing to see what would
happen and suddenly things "caught up" - a whole sentence appeared at
once.

That's the kind of buffering delay that used to happen in "ancient" times, working with old Intel 386 and 486 computers, with dialup modem connections. Not something anyone wants to go back to!

So, I can imagine a few factors that may be relevant:

Connection performance (I have a 300 MBPS cable connection)
Choice of browser (I'm using Firefox)
Choice of OS (I'm using either WinXP or Win10)
Speed/memory performance of computer (I'm using either a decade-old AMD Opteron at 2.8 GHz with 3 GB of RAM, or a recent Intel i5-6400 at 2.7 GHz and 8 GB of RAM).

Of those, my guess is that internet connection performance is the most likely factor to make a difference, with choice of browser being a close second. Since I don't see any difference using an older (high-end at the time) or modern (economy model) computer, I'm guessing that's the least likely factor.

I think the evidence is close to solid enough that I'd advise reporting your results to [email protected] to get it on the bug list. Include the factors above, and anything else you think might be relevant.

There's something else going on with this new (godforsaken IMO) editor that I just emailed Mark about. When editing a pending message, the HTML flashes by for a split second and then disappears. It's disconcerting.

gradually replaced the old editor everywhere else but the wiki, by May
26th. It went into the Wiki the week ending June 2nd.

This is the most telling thing to me. I joined Groups.io on the 18th of May and made multiple posts (10+) in my new group over the next few days and didn't experience anything unusual. I was testing this site out to see if we should move from Yahoo. Nothing buggy at all and I was so impressed we started switching over immediately. It was about a week after joining I started to see some lag but didn't connect it to this site?until I realized that was the only place it was happening.

There has to be some issue with the new editor.

I guess that will make testing for it a bit tedious. Not knowing at what
point it might kick in means you'd have to type extra long.

How can I enable the "Add Pictures" icon??
we do not have attachments enabled.

Disallowing attachments also disallows pictures.

This is probably done because the New Topic and Reply editors add pictures as attachments to the message. The image that appears in the message body is an HTML reference to the attached image file.

There's growing acceptance of another way to carry image data in email messages, one that puts the data inside the HTML of the message rather than carried as a separate part. That might be a feature request for the beta@ list.

Many email user interfaces have traditionally used the "cid:" (attached image file) method of inserting images in formatted message bodies. Thunderbird has only recently changed to using the "data:" method (inside the HTML img tag) by default.

- The instructions were right in front of me -- I just did not scroll down far enough to reach the other side of a wide white space which I had assumed was the bottom margin. Thanks for your patience - future as well as past, as I don't doubt I shall have lots more questions - and likely overlook lots of other obvious answers.

I'm pretty sure that's it. G.io includes the entire message instead of just a
partial quote.

If one looks far enough down, one will find it.

Maybe a better way to do it would be to put the details up top, with the
included message below.

It's kind of like bottom posting: it's more logical, but easier to miss after a
long quote.

I consider GMF primarily for group moderators, but open and friendly to anyone, with or without moderator status or the intent to become one.

Although I also moderate at Group_Help, please don't think I'm speaking for its owner. Myself, I think of it as the "generic" help group for Groups.io users.

Mark has been working on it, but more in the wordsmithing of the site pages and controls themselves than (until lately) in the Help pages themselves. In this he's been helped along by some very active members of the beta@ group - suggesting both features and their names and descriptions.

Mark is currently engaged in some enhancement to the (still rather bare-bones) help page. Some sections have been updated, more are in the works. He's invited us to help him along, see GMF's wiki page mock-up of the help page:

I also want GMF's wiki to be a good resource for the how-to, tips and tricks, and other information that goes beyond what fits comfortably in official help and support pages. There's clearly going to be some overlap there, but that's ok.

Unlike YG's email notices (which state that you can approve them either by hitting REPLY or via the web), G.io's email notification contained no instructions whatsoever. Because the moderated email was urgent and I wanted to take no chances, I went to the web, but at that particular moment replying by email would have been far, far, far more convenient. :-). Would G.io consider following Yahoo's example of including simple instructions in the email?]

What a shame that Y ran Groups into the ground. The original Yahoo lists (Mark's handiwork?), which I switched to in the late '90s, were like bare bones Model Ts, with no frills but all the necessities, and supported by such superb canned help and instructions that even the most computer illiterate newbie, like myself, could get in and drive successfully. I guessing that G.io has not (yet) felt the need for such encyclopedic elementary instruction because most of its groups are still manned by very tecchi-proficient folks. But I'm also guessing that that could quickly change as more and more non-tecchi refugees, like myself, flock to you from Yahoo.

I understood that.

I was assisting in that effort by listing places where one can enter text without using the new (TinyMCE) editor.

In Plain Text mode the New Topic and Reply composition boxes are such places. In fact they are particularly good test cases as they are in the same page context as the new editor would be - a minimal difference comparison (very few differing conditions other than being the new editor or not).

My point here ... is that this editor is very buggy.

I've updated the description of Blockquote's buggy behavior on the Wiki page:

I haven't reproduced and don't have a characterization for the two-Enter problem nor for the laggy behavior others have seen. Someone who can is invited to add their observations to the Quirks section of that page --
as well as report details to [email protected] in hopes of getting them fixed.

That, the edit box for your signature on your Subscription page, the description field when you create an event in the Calendar, the Description field when you edit a photo, a Paragraph field in a Database table. Undoubtedly some others.

Something else that _does_ use the TinyMCE editor is Wiki page creation or editing (if in HTML format). That might be a useful double-check.
