Re: Owner of two groups, also I'm new.

Julie,

?
1. I will be hopefully transferring the groups from yahoo. I see that in Feb it changed so that you need to have a Premium account for that to work. Can I just have one premium account to transfer both my groups??
I don't think so.
?
?

2. The two groups are a common interest, but one is elected officials and the other is comprised of elected officials and members. There is *some* overlap in the membership between the two groups.

However, if you import one as a subgroup of the other then yes, you only pay for the primary group.
?
For example, if you can arrange things so that officials and members is the primary group and officials (only) is the subgroup, then you may be able to make that work.
?
This would be a little like my PTA group where the primary group is open to all unit members, but there are subgroups for just the unit board members, teachers, administration, volunteers, etc.
?
?

We would like to prevent members from being able to post to both groups from one email using the group addresses from their email client. We'd prefer that they post the same message individually to each group.

I don't know of any way to control that. Other than by good choices for the primary and subgroup names so that members are naturally guided to post in the correct group.
?
With a subgroup arrangement it would never be necessary to post in both groups, because the members of the subgroup are perforce members of the primary group.

If they select "New Topic" from the bottom of another email, they're prompted to a page to login. Is there a way to bypass that login, or is that the main scenario in which people do need to register for an account?

?
They can create a new topic by email by avoiding use of their email Reply function (which I think is what you meant about using the group address in their email). But doing that on the web site will require them to log in. Fortunately, with Groups.io that's very simple.

Re: Reply To Sender

Michael,

?
I have the Remove Other Reply Options box NOT check.? And have it set to Group and Sender

I see the ability to reply to group and the ability to reply to send if it is a reply to an email, but if you access it on the web you only set the option to Reply to Group And Sender
?
The member can enable the Reply to Sender function by clicking the Private button, off to the right.
?
With Reply To set to Group and Sender there is no Reply to Group (only) function. And vice-versa.
?
Also, I only know about this topic because I get a digest where it is listed...but If I am on the website and click on Topics the Reply to Sender topic is not listed??
?
Do you see other recent topics? If not, you may need to click the Date heading on the upper right to reverse the sort order of the list:

Fair point, but reductio as absurdam the result is that if anyone, or a whole group of people, thought a proposal was way off target then they would be unable to say so, however honest their assessment and however politely they expressed their view.?

Certainly ad hominem attacks must be avoided but there has to be room for honest criticism of an idea.

Owner of two groups, also I'm new.

Hello,
I am in the process of starting up two new groups. We will hopefully be migrating from yahoo shortly. We're in a trial stage right now.?

As I said, I'm the owner of two groups. I have two questions.?
1. I will be hopefully transferring the groups from yahoo. I see that in Feb it changed so that you need to have a Premium account for that to work. Can I just have one premium account to transfer both my groups??

2. The two groups are a common interest, but one is elected officials and the other is comprised of elected officials and members. There is *some* overlap in the membership between the two groups.? We would like to prevent members from being able to post to both groups from one email using the group addresses from their email client. We'd prefer that they post the same message individually to each group. It gets confusing for people when they are trying to figure out to which group they are replying. We can certainly ask folks not to do that, but is there a setting anywhere which would prevent someone from addressing an email to both groups? (I kind of expect not, but just checking.)

And a final question. I've only added a few select board members to try out the groups. I've sent them individual email invites. They have not been prompted to create an account here with user name and password. They can post to the group by using the group email address from their email. If they select "New Topic" from the bottom of another email, they're prompted to a page to login. Is there a way to bypass that login, or is that the main scenario in which people do need to register for an account?

Thank you in advance!

Re: Can I add a table to group Wiki pages? #wiki

Thank you. That works.

I have reported the bug and suggested that at least it should give a small message saying what to do to get the full toolbar. I will report back if I hear anything helpful / specific.

Re: Reply To Sender

Michael,

?
BUt I don't see an option to REPLY TO GROUP OR SENDER.
?
You get that effect by not checking the Remove Other Reply Options box, just below the Reply To option.
?
Members replying by email can usually circumvent whatever choice you choose by directly altering the To address in their reply, of course. For them these choices set what's available by default, depending too on their choice of email interface.

Re: Reply To Sender

I see the option of giving the choice of? REPLY TO GROUP? ?REPLY TO SENDER? ? AND? REPLY TO GROUP AND SENDER

BUt I don't see an option to REPLY TO GROUP OR SENDER.

I would think that most of the time you would want to reply to group? but once in a while you want to Reply to Sender but not to both.

Re: Can I add a table to group Wiki pages? #wiki

Su,

?
I'm sorry but I don't see such an icon. Is there a setting somewhere else that I need to change first?
?
No.
?
What you need is a wider window on your browser. And you'll need to close and re-open the edit for it to take effect.
?
Please report this bug to [email protected]. I think I did so once in the past but it apparently isn't fixed. For some reason the responsive code that selects which buttons to put on the tool bar refuses to use more than about half the width of the bar, with the result that you're missing many of the buttons unnecessarily.

Here's what I see in the editor for creating new Wiki pages:

Re: Relationship between Parent and Subgroup Permissions

Chris,

I might add that if you were to make any such request you would find
that it would be vigorously opposed by most if not even all of the
other members of that group,

Perhaps so, despite the fact that the members there have been instructed not to post negatively.

Re: Subgroups and email addresses question #subgroups

Su,

Is this change in the email address for the main list required?
Yes.

Though you can name it something other than "main".

What happens if people continue to post to the current address
([email protected])?
The original primary group email address and web page address continue to work.

I don't want the 800+ members to have to change their post / etc.
email addresses just for the dozen or so in the subgroup, ...
That should happen "organically". That is, messages posted after the change will have the new addresses in them, and the new email address will be used for Reply (assuming the group setting is to reply to the group). So eventually the members' auto-fill will pick up the new address and the members may update their address books / bookmarks.

Su,

I don't see an option to add a table into a Wiki page.
There isn't one.

I also don't see an option to edit the html code directly.
That's provided by the Source code button, < > icon. That's the same as in message posts:

Subgroups and email addresses question #subgroups

I would like to create a subgroup for a small set of individuals in my main group. However, I got scared off because the page says:
Let's say you're creating a subgroup called sg. After you create the subgroup, your parent group will now be [email protected] and your subgroup will be called [email protected]. You can change main to any other name you wish.
Is this change in the email address for the main list required? What happens if people continue to post to the current address ([email protected])?

I don't want the 800+ members to have to change their post / etc. email addresses just for the dozen or so in the subgroup, so if this change is unavoidable, I will probably make my own subgroup list using my email client instead.

Thanks for your help.
Su

Can I add a table to group Wiki pages? #wiki

I don't see an option to add a table into a Wiki page. I also don't see an option to edit the html code directly.

Can I add a table? If so, how?

Thank you,
Su

Re: member approved by accident

I sent an email like yours to the member and gave her a week to respond. That was something like the third time I had reached out to her.

So when no response happened after that week, I removed her and send a message informing her that she had been declined because she didn't provide the needed info. Also saying that she could request to join again if she wanted to in the future.

Thanks for your help.
Su

Re: Relationship between Parent and Subgroup Permissions

Frances,

No I did not. I will take a look.

I already deleted the subgroup but I will refer to it the next time I want to create a new subgroup.

Thanks

Sheryl

Re: Relationship between Parent and Subgroup Permissions

Hi Chris,?

The more I tried adjusting the settings for the subgroup which near the end started driving me crazy and was wondering if it could even be done.

So before I completely gave up I decided to post this question on this forum to make sure. I didn't want to keep going down this path if it wasn't possible.?

I won't be making this request and will figure out an alternative solution and probably delete the subgroup since it won't work the way I want it.

Thank you so much for your help.

Sheryl
