Need advice [about a suspicious message]
I approved an email that had an attachment from a group member, after approval she notified me that she did not send the message.? It has a zip file attached .? I have notified the group not to open the zip file, anything more I can do to protect members from this? ? Sandra Pickens

banner question
How does one change the photo banner to one that is more representative of my group? While I respect elephants, they really don't have much to do with quilting. By the way, my email that said my group was approved said that if I have any questions, I should feel free to ask.? The email was sent from a "no reply" email. Oh, the irony. Stephanie |
Re: Email bouncing question
Michael, I am having trouble with one of my members email.? they can receive emails but they can not send emails.? they keep getting bounced when they reply. Have a look at the Activity Log for your group, you may be able to spot "tried to send" entries corresponding to the member's failed attempts. That's assuming that the member got the group's posting address right, which should be the case if they are actually replying (and your group is set to Reply to Group). As Jim said, sending from the wrong address or sending to the wrong address are the most common errors. In the case of sending From the wrong address, you'll see an activity log entry like "Non-member [address] attempted to send message "[subject]" via email". Tell the member that he/she must send from the address subscribed to your group - that address will appear at the bottom of the footer of each email he/she receives from the group. You may find log entries citing other causes. Hopefully the log entry is clear enough for you to figure out what to do. If not, feel free to post the entry here. In the case of sending To the wrong address there won't be any log entries, so you'll have to rely on Jim's technique of having the member CC you (your address, not the group's) next time he/she attempts to post or reply to the group. Careful checking of the To field in that copy should reveal the problem. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
Re: Email bouncing question
Michael, are you saying that your member cannot send email to the group?
Likely your member is using the wrong email address to send from. The member can send from a second address - by going to the group, their name in the top right corner, Account and adding an email alias - Advanced. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/dealing-with-bouncing For bouncing, see Admin, Activity, Member Activity and if?it was really "bouncing", see?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/dealing-with-bouncing Frances -- /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki /static/help More help: use the search button at the top of the Messages list. |
Re: Email bouncing question
Jim Higgins
We could probably answer this question had you included the bounce message your member received.
Ask your member to send you acopy of the bounce message. Also ask the member to send another email to the group and to include you as a CC to that email. When you get your copy... 1. Closely examine the group address for a typo. 2. Examine the email address of the member as shown in the email vs the email address in her groups.io accoount. I bet a discrepancy in one of those will be the cause of the problem. Jim H |

Re: Yahoo transfer

I'm assuming my group is NOT one of the 8? The transfer was in progress, and I just wandered by to see if anything was happening, saw I needed to do something, and now I'm being asked to upgrade. (Foolishly I missed that it was the year of premium, and paid for the one month, figuring I would just absorb the expense for the group.) So I'm still stuck in transfer limbo, now have paid for a month, definitely can't afford to pay for a year, and guess I just have to go back to the idea of transferring everything item by item, member by member. I wasn't even wanting to bring the message archives.
?But it's for a volunteer group, so I can't really ask them to pay. vandy |

Being able to moderate via e-mail and getting notified via e-mail when something requires moderation, are separate things, IMO. It is perfectly feasible to have both. (I assume the relevant option is "Email when there are messages needing approval".) I find the potential to edit pending messages incredibly useful, and I suspect I'll use it a lot, but that would mean visiting the web anyway. Samuel |

Having done so, the Subscriber record in the Members List will display an "A" tag. See /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Status-Badges-in-the-Members-List, Email Delivery section. It is also possible to set this as a group default by going to Admin>Settings and clicking on the "Default Sub Settings" button at the top of the page. The default will only apply to Subscribers that join after you've made the change, and can subsequently be altered by the individual as described in the previous paragraph. 2. Is there a setting that will make that information known? E.g. if an attachment is removed by the moderator, the message would e.g. contain say something like [attachment "very large file.zip" (20 MB) removed].There is no setting to automatically notify anybody of edits you might make during message moderation. You must do that yourself. 3. If the moderator gets a notification to approve a message that contains an attachment, the message is itself attached, so the moderator receives the attachment in his e-mail. Is it possible to set the system so that the moderator gets notification that there is a message waiting to be approved, but without having to receive a copy of the mail himself? Not that I am aware of. Such a setting would negate the ability to approve messages via email. 4. Is there an option whereby attachments that are sent to the list, are not actually attached to the mails, but are stored online, and a link to those attachments are put in the mails instead, so that users who want to view the attachment can click the link and download it?Any email received by the group whose combined attachments exceed the Max Attachment Size setting will be sent as links. This determination is done on a subscriber-by-subscriber basis as the outgoing emails are sent to the group members.? Note that all attachments continue to reside on the server in association with the corresponding messages in the message archive. They also count against your quota. The only way to keep them from accumulating is to disallow attachments in settings. See Admin>Settings>Message Formatting>Attachments for available options. ? Some attachment questions

I googled before asking. 1. Where to change notification settings?
Hello everyone
A new user joined, and as moderator I got a notification via e-mail about it (I'm happy with that). The notification says: To turn off this notification, log into and edit your subscription. However, it gives no clue as to *where* in the subscription these notifications can be turned off (and presumably turned on). I visited what I suspect are all tabs, but could not find it. Can anyone tell me? Thanks Samuel |

Do I really need to use a different email to login to my groups to keep my personal address out of the footer [next to unsubscribe]?1. The e-mail address next to "Unsubscribe" is the e-mail address of the recipient, not the sender. You'll see your own e-mail address also at the bottom of mails that other people sent to this or your list (and the other people see their own addresses there). It took me a while to figure it out, though: that e-mail address is the e-mail address that you (the recipient) is subscribed with. 2. The sender's e-mail address is noted in the "Reply to sender" link. 3. With my Yahoo and Google groups where I'm the owner or moderator, I'm always subscribed using a separate e-mail address. It helps keep things separate. 4. Are you asking if it could be possible to set multiple "FROM" addresses in the web version of Groups.io and then make it possible to select a FROM address from a dropdown list whenever you send an e-mail (similar to how it would work in an e-mail program where you can select the FROM address that you're sending a reply from)? Re: Members log in issue
A confirmation email is sent when someone applies to a group with an email address that does not currently have a groups.io account.?The purpose of the confirmation email is to demonstrate that the person who applied (usually via the "join this group" link on the home page) actually owns the email address they entered and wants to receive groups.io emails there.
This email will contain a link that she needs to click on to get out of "Not Confirmed" status. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Status-Badges-in-the-Members-List?for further details. You can send a new confirmation email for her. To do this, open her user record in your group's Member's List and click on the corresponding button. But as Chris mentioned, she needs to quit changing her email address and confirm one of them. Without knowledge of what kind of mess she may have created, it's hard to know if it will actually work. She has clearly not followed the established routine for setting up an account and/or a group subscription, and on the face of it has complicated matters further by changing her email address twice. She is going to have to stop and do what the system has asked her to do, although if she has been tinkering with her email address that may not work. Without wishing to be unkind there are some people who can create confusion faster than anyone else can help clear it up and at the moment it looks rather as though she might be one of them. Chris |
