Re: Asking members to trim trailing quotes, versus automation
You remind me of a vending machine repairman that used to come fix the machines where I used to work. He insisted that the only reason the machines didn't work properly was because people kicked or

Re: Asking members to trim trailing quotes, versus automation
This is precisely how the Groups.io forum interface works, too, as do many others. ?The Gmail web interface has done that for a long time. ?What appears above was simply selected from the previous

Re: Asking members to trim trailing quotes, versus automation
I have to 100% disagree with you. Since the algorithm exists and people have gotten used to its existence, and it takes care of the trailing posts for users, I think it's ludicrous to ask them to trim

Re: Asking members to trim trailing quotes, versus automation
Quick P.S.: ?My previous message was composed entirely in one font face and color. ? What has happened here appears to be an extension of the issue I reported with signatures. ?I have no idea why

Re: Asking members to trim trailing quotes, versus automation
And while I have no issue, none, with your inquiry I do have a problem with the whole idea that there should be a need for the algorithm in question. It is not too much to ask for people to give the

Re: Asking members to trim trailing quotes, versus automation
And this is exactly why I'm inquiring about the seeming bug with the top-posting algorithm. The algorithm works fine 99% of the time. The archives do NOT contain prior posts (or return them in a

Re: Asking members to trim trailing quotes, versus automation
Indeed, I find trailing content very useful in reminding me what is being discussed. I am on a very large number of discussion groups and I find it difficult to remember what a new message responding

Louise, Very cool. That also works in Thunderbird (and Eudora Classic). Seems to be fine. I also like the fact that your reply is plain text. Maybe I was wrong with that "has moved on to formatted

Re: Asking members to trim trailing quotes, versus automation
J, I was aware that I'm an outlier. ;-) For example, having my email client set so that my replies are plain text means that it gives me automatically a standard form of bottom quote for a text/plain

Just thought I'd point out that I have discovered a trick that helps if you use an iPhone, and I think iPad, when using the iOS mail apps in any case: Select the section you want to quote *before*

Re: Asking members to trim trailing quotes, versus automation
I think 99% of the time that you're seeing selective quotations, it's when people are posting via the web, which makes the selective quotes very easy to do. I don't know if anybody trims emails much

Shal, yes, I was talking about top-posted replies. It was a semantics issue. By "quoted" I thought you meant "intentionally quoted," as in, within quotes. The prior messages accumulate below, but I

Re: Asking members to trim trailing quotes, versus automation
What you may actually be seeing when a post may seem to have been trimmed by the poster, or when there is no historical context, is that either (a) the person has responded via email to a subsequent
