Re: Printing, Forwarding, and Saving Messages

In the Admin | settings | message policies, set for Allow Members to Download Archives. Then SAVE. This should show a button at the top of the Topics/Messages list to Export Group Data. That gives a menu of items to export.

I hope that helps,

Bart

We often move messages between lists by forwarding them, and send them to ourselves to become part of report. This is important.

Re: Messages/Topics

Hi Sharon,

When you click on the left Menu 'Messages', the default Topics list comes up. The button at the top that Says Topics has a little drop down menu, and if you click on Messages there, the list changes to individual messages. In date order, initially.

The drop down ¡°Topics¡± menu then says Messages, Expanded, and Polls. No topics.

I¡¯m trying to bring more of our members into moderating and more importantly encouraging members to use more of the features. When I run into these less than intuitive features, they decide not to. The tolerance for messages being called topics, and then topics being defined as messages, expanded, and polls is very low.

Has this been discussed? Are changes planned?

Understood. In turn, please understand that I had no way of knowing that you would be aware of this option.

Hopefully down the road it can be added.

There is a box to enter the email addresses, one per line. You do just what it says...put one of those keywords after each entry.

e.g.:

{start box} --------------------------------
thisname(at)domain1.org digest
Display Name <thatname(at)domain2.com> nomail
theothername(at)domain3.net summary
{end box}?--------------------------------

If you just enter the email addresses and let the Default Sub Setting (see Admin>Settings and click the corresponding button at the top) determine their email delivery, I frankly think that's best. If a given subscriber subsequently decides that (s)he doesn't like the group default and wants to change to something else, there's nothing keeping them from doing that.

Re: Allow Non-Subscribers to Post Without Moderation? #moderation

Dave,
You don't need an Enterprise account or your own domain.? The domain mail forwarding is just a "nice to have".
A Google group is your best bet.? A?separate groups.io group for board would still not allow external email to flow in unmoderated.? You really want to have external email filtered/moderated or somehow controlled to avoid/reduce spam.? The Google group will do spam filtering and notify you when it's detected.? As long as it looks like legitimate email, it should come in.

Owners (and Moderators with "edit archives" permissions) can edit a Topic to incorporate a hashtag into the subject line.

At this time the same cannot be done with search hits.

At what point in the transfer process did your migration get stuck?? Did you check the transfer page for status updates?? Many folks have later realized they either skipped a step, didn't continue far enough, or did something before they should have.

The delay is usually a one time thing, as mentioned.? Just add all 250 names at once and wait for an approval.? It doesn't only approve 20 at a time.

You can reduce your frustration level by searching and reading some of the previous posts on this group, as well as reading through the Wiki pages on various subjects.

No, unfortunately there's not a bulk "add hashtag".? I think this has been requested on the beta group, the site suggestion box.? You could bump the suggestion if you find it, or start a new topic about it.

Re: Limit on Direct Add

This is ridiculous. I am moving my group from Yahoo groups and tried the migration feature which in one and a half months never took place. So I paid the $9 subscription fee so that I could Direct Add and now it won't let me do it as I have 250 names to add. How on earth do I get this group migrated. This is so FRUSTRATING. I don't want to just add 20 people/day. that would take a month to get everyone added!!! What's the point of automation if we can't automate tasks.?

Received from Bruce Bowman at 10/22/2018 11:58 PM UTC:

With the proper group settings, it is possible to disable hashtags entirely. As long as both extremes are still available to us, I'm trying my best to tolerate them. :-)

That's my take on it.

Using a new car as an analogy, I don't need to fully understand all the details of every system setting and option in order to drive my new car home from the dealer... or to the grocery store and back... or even across the country and back.

But if my new car kills the engine every 30 days until I contact the dealer for a link to restart it, that's another matter. ;-)

Bulk add of hashtags to old messages ported from Yahoo ... is this possible?

Our group has 30k + messages that are frequently searched for research purposes. It's a tremendous resource that would be made even better if typical hashtags could be retroactively added. As an example, if I could do a search on a keyword "xyz" and get a few hundred posts, is there a way to bulk add the hashtag #xyz?

Thanks,

Bart

Re: renamed my main group, now I cant get to it, or sub-group via drop-down "Your Groups", top left #groupname

On Tue, Oct 23, 2018 at 10:03 PM, Duane wrote:
If you already had the subgroup, just renaming the main group shouldn't do anything serious.?
The main group name is embedded in the URL of a subgroup (https://subgroupname.groups.io/g/maingroupname). On that basis I believe changing the name of the main group could be anticipated to have similar impacts on the subgroup.
?
As we've had several people ask about this, I've created a new wiki entry. Please edit as appropriate.

I don't believe there is any way to bulk-change the items under Advanced Preferences.?If things haven't proceeded too far, it might be easier to fix the Default Sub Settings (you need to do that anyway), delete all current subscriptions, and Direct Add them again.
?
Hope this helps,

Dave,

Maybe someday...
The way to get someday to arrive sooner is to post the request in beta, the official Groups.io suggestion box. No one from Groups.io monitors GMF so the request will go unheard if only discussed here.

Re: renamed my main group, now I cant get to it, or sub-group via drop-down "Your Groups", top left #groupname

Sam,

I wonder if G.io can RESTORE my group back to original?
As you've discovered, after renaming you primary group it can take some time for the new name to propagate through the internet (specifically the DNS system) and to everyone's computers.

That delay is partly within your own computer if the OS caches the DNS entries (and it most likely does), and if your browser caches them (it may also). Your home router may also have a DNS cache, and your ISP service almost certainly does.

But once the name has reached you, you can access your primary group and change it back, if you really want to.

Having support change it back for you won't change the need for the second change to also propagate through the DNS system. But you'd have to ask support if they will do that for you.

Not seeing email about posts made to an announcement group

When I did a direct add to populate my main user group, I must have inadvertently checked "following only" under the Advanced Preferences / Message Selection.? I think that explains why most users never got email about post made by our moderator in the main user group (setup as an Announcement Group).? ?In order to correct this, is there a way to do a bulk change to Advanced Perferences / Mseeage Selection to "All Messages."? I don;t look forward to having to do this manually for 600+ accounts.
