Re: Feature Request / Suggestion. Ability to search the title field in pictures

Hi Shal,

I¡¯m glad that Mark has a ticket for this improvement.? But I noticed that ticket was created in 2016. Any way it could receive a bump? ? THANKS

I have no sympathy for criminal hackers and spammers, but part of the problem is that many of these twerps are from countries where "proper jobs" are rare and criminal use of computers and networks is ignored or rarely prosecuted. Until international cooperation on prosecuting cybercrime becomes more prevalent, preventing this stuff will be a struggle. I wish it were different.

There are other reasons for the spate of cybercrime. As one of the engineers that built many of the systems preyed upon today, I can tell you that thirty or forty years ago when the foundations were laid, we were so naive (dumb?) about networks, security was seldom thought about, and when it was, often neglected for features that would sell product. Some product managers used to say that security was a nuisance that inhibited sales. I don't blame them: they were right. We got many customer complaints that security was inconvenient.?The correct response would have been to design more convenient security instead of pushing it aside. But I have not heard that kind of talk lately. The industry has wised up but there is now so much to be fixed. If email, for example, were built today, a lot of the problems we experience now would be impossible.

Accurate hindsight is a wonderful thing, but largely useless. Foresight is precious and uncommon. Wish I had more of the latter.
Thank you for the opportunity to get this off my chest.
Best, Marv

Linda,

This also creates a Draft, which is annoying to me as it involves
remembering to Discard it.
The link in a Digest opens a reply, but Mark denied that it creates
a draft (unless you type into the reply box).

if you can catch it happening that should probably be reported to
support as a bug.

I am sure the owner doesn't analyze likes.
I want them to know I want a feature also.
Neither I nor any other member of GMF works for Groups.io - this is a user-to-user forum. To chime in on suggested features, or to suggest a feature, you need to post in beta@, which is the official suggestion box.

Interestingly, the mail I sent saying I had resolved my problem had some
extra text in the subject line following the exclamation mark -- which
doesn't appear on the version put out by the list.

This didn't prevent the mail from getting through -- but it's worth noting
for future reference.
[ Moral : DON'T use exclamation marks in Subject lines ]

Re: Major issues in my group, spoofed or something internal in IO??? Help please.

Hi Shal. I just wish these hackers/spammers would put their 'skills' to good use and go get a proper job! They are incredibly clever some of them and to save myself time and aggro I have used Mailwasher pro for many years. That is probably the reason I didn't get the 'spam' messages from 'me' in my inbox as I normally just hit delete on mine as it's just copies of what I've myself sent to group.?
I am extremely careful with e-mail and if in the slightest doubt take proper precautions because as you say they can look incredibly convincing.?
I am going to watch carefully and continue monitoring but again today things are nice and quiet. Your help with this and your explanation of the headers has been most helpful to me & is much appreciated and I've shared your replies with my co-owner and Paula.?

Betcha didn't know that you can post a "like" by email, and that when
you do the message doesn't need moderation and doesn't post to the
membership (or the site).

Simply reply with the first line containing the single word "like", or
the two characters "+1" alone on the line - not including the quotes in
either case.

Or, you can follow the View/Reply Online link in the footer of the
message and click the "Like" link in the bar below the message.

Unfortunately, a mechanism to inform anyone about the Like has yet to be
implemented.

Question About Advertising

Pam

Hello All!

I think I remember someone on this list mentioning newsletters or groups that you can advertise your own groups in? Is that at all accurate? And if so, can anyone point me in the right direction of these groups?

Thanks so much!

Pam? :)

Re: How long does it take to migrate a Yahoo Group to groups.io? And am I able to vet new applicants before they join Groups.io?

Thank you, Bruce. Between you and Shal I have sorted out the main issues. We are ready to go and many members have already posted to say how happy they are with the move and painless process.?

There may well be other issues and I may well be back but for the moment thank you both,

Best wishes

Open the Members List (Admin>Members). Find the subscriber and click anywhere on his/her row. You can change the person to a Moderator using the "Role" pull-down menu.

Now set the Moderator Permissions and Notifications the way you want. It doesn't make much sense, for example, to give someone the responsibility to Approve Pending Messages if the corresponding Notification is not also checked.

Finally, be sure to click the "Save" button at the bottom when you're done.

Re: Major issues in my group, spoofed or something internal in IO??? Help please.

Paul,

Is the option to ban a Domain useful in certain cases like this?
Generally no. In this case the domain of the From: is a major email service. That would be banning the owner herself, and probably many of her members.

But perhaps a more effective method would be to have some way to block
the actual spammer's IP address. Is that possible with Groups.io?
I don't believe that is possible with Groups.io.

In the case at hand I had an opportunity to examine the full header of two samples from the spammer - the two were sent via different domains and different IP addresses. That leads me to suspect that the person bought a list of compromised email credentials and uses each only once, to hide his/her identity.

Blocking an IP number has always seemed to me to be a very effective
way of stopping this sort of abuse and I do not understand why it is
not more in use as a tool for that.
It is too easily circumvented by the spammer, and too likely to catch innocent users who share the same address.

There was also an IP look-up tool with that group which showed us if
any other of our legitimate members had that same IP number (which was
very unlikely) so that we wouldn't accidentally block them in the
process of trying to ban the spammers.
Exactly. This problem may go away as IPv6 gains traction, but for now it is usually the case that entire households, corporate departments, hotels, dormitories, libraries, and in some places /cities/ sit behind a single IP address assigned to their shared router.

Re: Feature Request / Suggestion. Ability to search the title field in pictures

Peter,

I own a group with lots of pics. It would be a good feature to be
able to search the title field in the photos section to be able to
find related pics.

ID column in the database - can I hide it or make it smaller?

I'm creating a database for group members.? Is there a way to permanently hide the ID column?? Or to change its width?? Currently is is taking about two inches on the screen, and I need to continually hide anytime I open the database.? I'm looking to permanently hide or to change the width so that it only takes 2 characters of space on the screen.? Any help is appreciated!? Linda

That's useful information to know.
Indeed. I knew that you would not be allowed to delete an account that was the sole Owner of a group...didn't know that the same rubric applied to downgrading your own group subscription.

So I learned something today.

Be advised that it is still possible to leave a group Owner-less via the Account Merge function (ref: ). That has been reported to support but I have not seen any corresponding bugfix announcement.

My first thought is that you may be logged in a on different email account
and that you have multiple subscriptions to that group
....which reminded me that I do, in fact, have another account on that
site which I'd forgotten about, but which has now allowed me to log on as
an owner, and re-instate my permissions.

So all now sorted -- thanks a lot to all who replied to my plea for help.

Next, if you actually did change your own membership, that means that
there is still another user account that has Owner/Moderator status and
you will have to ask that person to put your status back. In other words,
the software wouldn't let you do this to yourself in the first place if
you were the only Owner of the group.
That's useful information to know.

Now to attempt to find out how I managed to exclude myself in the first
place.
