Re: When replying to messages in this group

Different email engines handle "include original message" in different ways, or don't include them it all.
It depends on how you answer a post, whether the thread shows up.
Some folks aren't savvy enough to use (or don't know about) "select, copy, paste" when replying via email.

Re: Automatic Unsubscribes?

Patty,

Would not that auto reinstatement email now end up in that person's
Spam folder since they have marked the group's email address as Spam?
That's certainly a possibility.

I can't say it is a certainty, given the vagaries of how various email services filter spam.

Should we as list mods, warn unsubbed list members to also look in
their Spam/Junk folder for that auto reinstatment email, ...
I've done that on occasion, using my personal email, in some of my tight-knit groups (classmates).

And, it sure would be nice if Groups.io had the ability to "group
email" all auto unsubbed list members, to let them know they were auto
unsubbed due to marking the list's email as Spam, and here's the link
to be reinstated.
How would that differ from the message Groups.io already sends? That is, if this follow-up message comes from groups.io it seems no less likely to land in spam than the first one. Or do I misunderstand you?

I already have two pages of auto-unsubbed list members since
transferring over, about 3 weeks ago :-( Again, due to the make up
my list members, ...
A large population of AOL, Yahoo Mail, and certain other service's users will do that, regardless of the members' other characteristics.

Re: Members Unable to Post to Group

Leslie,

One member of my group said that her email to our group bounced, so I
checked her "Email Delivery History" and found this:
As Duane and others mentioned, the Email Delivery History is for outbound messages - from the group to the member.

It sounds like your member's message bounced on the inbound leg - from her to the group's posting address. You can learn about problems on the inbound leg from the group's Activity log. In the Message Activity tab look for entries showing "attempted to send message". Those will be failed attempts,

But it sounds like you already figured out that this was a case of
"Non-member [person's gmail address] attempted to send message ..."

Re: Members Unable to Post to Group

Many supposedly free email providers perform some sort of restriction on their victim/members.? rr.com throttles the incoming messages if one exceeds an unspecified total of something they do? not define to the user.? ?As a resdult, messages are bounced by the rr.com server with cryptic error messages like, "too many messsages"?
account busy, try later
etc.
Hotmail also does this and Prodigy.? AOL has some unique stuff going on.? Their servers are actually on their own custom style network with bridges to the real internet.? If you assigned bridge gets too busy, they declare a "destination timeout".? this last may have changed but I've seen more retries on AOL that on any other service.

Thanks for all your help.

I sent out a test message. Everyone was able to receive it and respond to it except for one charter.net account whose account was set up to respond through gmail. We subscribed her gmail account in addition to her charter.net account and now everything seems to be working for all members. :-)

* SMTP: Simple Mail Transport Protocol: the internet protocol used to communicate with mail servers for the purposes of sending and retrieving email.? It is not specific to mobile devices.

I don't know exactly what error message you are reading, but it sounds like someone is sending malformed files, like one with the EOF character inserted inside the header or something.

EOF means "end of file" in this context also, but it emanates from deep within the mail server software and isn't something you can do anything about.

Bottom line for members unable to post is that unless the bounce message comes from Groups.io, then the member needs to directly contact the ISP thru which the message was posted. You probably need to see that bounce message - complete with all headers - to determine where it came from. Good luck explaining to your member what "complete with all headers" means.

Re: Members Unable to Post to Group

As it turns out, all three members whose mail said "452 4.1.1 Too much mail from this address E2210" are subscribed with charter.net addresses. One of them has been trying to respond through the gmail address she said she didn't want to subscribe to the group.

To see what's going on with a member, go to the Members page and select the member in question by clicking on the row anyplace except the box on the left.? On the resulting page, choose the "Email Delivery History button at the top.

I read all my mail from my in box and when I do get digest mail I have no problem copying enough of the message to make it so folks know what I¡¯m referring to.

That would only work in an email client.? When replying online, there's no such setting, so each person replying has to make the decision of whether there will be any previous information included.

As an example, I highlighted your line above, then clicked on Reply so it was automatically included.? If I had just hit Reply, nothing would have been included, but I could click on "Quote Whole Post" (the speech balloon) to get it all included, then edit out anything I didn't want or intersperse my answers.

One member of my group said that her email to our group bounced, so I checked her "Email Delivery History" and found this:

Most Recent Unsuccessful Attempt:
Message: [MyGroup] Subject Title
Attempted: Jun 27
Response: 452 4.1.1 Too much mail from this address E2210

I thought I'd check every member in the group (we have maybe 10
members) and found that two other members have the same message.

And a fourth member had this:

Most Recent Unsuccessful Attempt:
Message: [MyGroup] Subject Title
Attempted: Jul 2
Response: EOF

What needs to happen for them to be able to respond to group posts? Is it something I can do myself?

You can do it whichever way you prefer, but you can't expect everyone else to conform to your way of thinking (unless you own the group ;>).? We each have our own preferred method of communicating.? On my groups, most of us tend to read online, so not a problem for us.

Go to the topic, select More below a message, and choose Edit Topic.? On the Edit page, just add the hashtag to the subject line, but be sure to leave a space on either side of it (none needed on the right if at the end of a line.)

Yes, that's what that means.? If you click on the View/Reply link at the bottom of GIO email, it will take you to the message.? Click reply and a editor box appears for you to type your reply in.

I personally find using the web interface clunky, not because of anything about the editor, but rather that I prefer to have all of my email come to one inbox: to have only one place (i.e., my mail user agent, Thunderbird) to check and one place to reply from.? When my new messages in my inbox are cleared, I know they are cleared for all groups and such I belong to.? Responding to group email isn't then any different for me than responding to any other email, or for that matter, email from other lists like Google groups, GNU Mailman listservs and so on.

Others are likely to have different preferences.

Glenn

how to allow moderators to apply a tag to a message? #hashtags

Dan Hartford

Hi,

In a subgroup, where we don't require posts to have tags, and also restrict creating new tags to moderators, I'm having trouble figuring out how to allow a moderator to apply a tag (i.e. edit topic) on posts created by other people.??

Thanks -- Dan

You mean like this?

Yes, but not everybody does it, and there is no way to force them to. My experience suggests that no amount of cajoling will get people to do what I want, even in my own groups.

?
When we see your answers, all is good, but sometimes I cannot figure out what the original question was the reply is for.
Whenever I run into this problem, I just click the "View/Reply Online" link in the footer, then click on the "View all XX messages in this thread" link at the bottom of the resulting page. Another option is to change to a Digest mode for your mail delivery, in which messages will be threaded.

Not a substitute for conscientious use of quoting, but opinions on what "conscientious" means vary widely.?

Hope this helps,
Bruce?
